It's really happening according to the Sun. Do you think its worth it? Will England follow during their half term?

I would like to get a better understanding of why test and protect is falling short. I guess lab delays mean it's very slow to update contacts who need to isolate. Lack of tests in the first place is an issue for actually getting tested, and it's also a massive disincentive to even bother trying to get a test. Presumably quite a lot of people never develop or perhaps never notice the symptoms that would trigger a test as well. Yet they have managed to make it work better in other places.

Health is a devolved issue and Sturgeon could and should have had a test and trace system working.

Unfortunately her and her party cannot run a bath and this is just the latest in a long line of failures from ferries to schools.[/quote]
Testing, it was agreed at the start of the pandemic, would be a U.K.-wide undertaking. She can’t magic up resources there. And it’s been a fucking disaster but it’s controlled by people Sturgeon has zero influence over.

ItIsEnola · 06/10/2020 10:20

England stated they were considering this weeks ago and emailed parents about it.

As for schools, lots of schools both in England and in Scotland have been shoring up their online learning provision and contacting parents about it. So it might be that schooling is provided online during the period that isn't the October holiday.

xtinak · 06/10/2020 10:26

Scotland clearly has lots of failings over stuff it can control. E.g. the app not appearing under key search terms in app stores.
Our contact tracing teams are separate. We have to be honest that there is plenty of incompetence on this side of the border. I've voted for the SNP loads but we have to be realistic that the Scottish Govt is also having a bit of a mare here!

Agree...I mean they get points for showing willing but ideally everything would be better.
Ecosse · 06/10/2020 10:35

@nibdedibble

Rubbish- testing is also being carried out by NHS Scotland and the track and trace system is totally devolved.

The blame lies purely at Sturgeon’s door for this and her deflection tactics and blaming others will not wash this time.

ItIsEnola · 06/10/2020 10:37

I don't think we have to accept rehashing independence partisanship to try to justify non-compliance during a pandemic. Luckily in RL I don't see any of the political point-scoring that saturates social media even though I have friends and relatives on all sides of the political spectrum.

I think we have to be careful of normalising division and bedding in political intransigence and abuse. No-one benefits. Not least the political pollsters who confuse disengagement with online tactics as disengagement with politics and then get blind sided when results don't correspond to what they observe on a highly manipulated social media.

Agreed. It isn't even correct since presumably after the 2 weeks there will be some virus still circulating.

Anyway, I guess 2 weeks half term rather than 1 is doable, provided plenty of school work is provided (not just revision, constructive markable work). But that is for older children, when my DC were younger I wouldn't be so bothered about 1 week extra half-term.

Some private schools have longer than 1 week off at half-term anyway.

But where I live at least there aren't many cases in school. There have been increases in local numbers, but I think they are at the university so not being spread into the community particularly.

What would be more important to me was that the 2 week lockdown was done properly and not half-assed. Given the lack of notice, many have booked holidays and that is now an issue for those people. For the 2-week lockdown to have the desired effect, it would need to be very strict and probably extend to travel. If they are going to do it, they need to give proper notice so people have time to change/cancel plans.

I’m in the same vicinity as permanentlyfedup

It is not a surprise to have restrictions just because it is affecting the central belt. It is par for the course at work.

NHS testing is separate and lower volume. Most testing takes place in lighthouse labs. I do not like this, because it’s badly run and serving only to pass money to Deloitte and Serco (and others), but it is a fact. It was agreed very early on that a co-ordinated testing system across the U.K. would be best. I don’t agree with that decision but then again, I didn’t get to make it Grin

Test results are then dealt with by track and trace teams and that is the bit that’s devolved. I don’t know how much of the problem is at the lighthouse labs end, or the tracing end. Do you? (Genuine question!)

pepperminttaste · 06/10/2020 11:03

@ItIsEnola

You're right. We are preparing (unofficially) for a week of ''blended learning' after our October week. We all had to confirm a couple of weeks ago that all children in our class had access to the internet. It was pretty obvious then what was coming.

ItIsEnola · 06/10/2020 11:29

@pepperminttaste yy same in our school and in the school where my friend teaches, and family in England had emails about online provision, etc approx 3 weeks ago.

I thought pointing that out might head off all the partisan posts at the pass but it seems not Hmm cybercons gonna cybercon Wink

pepperminttaste · 06/10/2020 11:31

@ItIsEnola Ah well, worth a try I suppose! Smile

NC4NW123 · 06/10/2020 11:35

Surely, every time we re open again.. the virus will continue to re infect people though ... that’s how a virus works 🤨 so surely this just pro longs the inevitable

Rushjob · 06/10/2020 11:37

If they want to shut schools then shut them for an extra week but don’t put people out of work or potentially shut business permanently over it.

Ohdeariedear · 06/10/2020 11:49

This may be the straw that breaks this camel’s back.

I’m supposed to be going to a cottage in the middle of nowhere for a week on Saturday, I’ve done every single fucking thing that’s been asked of me since March, sat and watched neighbours break the rules, watched friends “bend“ the rules, not seen my mum on her birthday, watched the kids go demented not seeing their friends, not been able to join a friend burying a parent. What’s the fucking point? Keep the pubs open! cheap food for August! Send our kids to Uni! Fucks sake.

I mean, I know what the point is, I understand, but it’s very hard to take at this point. (I really need/would like a holiday, can you tell?)

Newpuppymummy · 06/10/2020 11:51

I can’t see this happening in England. It would be a disaster for eye economy

ListeningQuietly · 06/10/2020 11:54

does anybody believe this rubbish jargon ?

Big hug from a total stranger on the Internet. We cancelled our holiday (abroad though) and tbh I’m so fed up of my own house, my street, the same walk I do to keep fit, not seeing folk, not seeing all my kids’ cousins playing together, having to plan things like a military operation, and not knowing what the end of this pandemic looks like. It’s a LOT.

I suppose that’s the choice - either damage the economy with this, or avoid harsher measures now but risk damaging the economy even more if/when you have to impose them later (like Paris, Madrid, Israel, and so on...)
Ohdeariedear · 06/10/2020 12:06

Thanks @nibdedibble, much appreciated. I feel better for having a wee rant!

ItIsEnola · 06/10/2020 12:09

@ohdeariedear Flowers yy I'd love a holiday too ... and to hug my mum ... and to see my friends in England and Europe.

I think it does make sense to try to get a grip on the figures again. Winter is going to be hard and difficult, and if an extra week at home can help to disrupt the curve then I think it's worth it. But I'm definitely going to buy in lots of treats gin if there's the possibility of homeschooling for a week. Grin

Ohdeariedear · 06/10/2020 12:26

She’s just said they are not intending to stop travel so that’s hopeful. 🤞
