Matt Hancocks latest "bright" idea. Just what an elderly dementia/stroke sufferer needs to make them happy. The man's a fool.

This thread demonstrates exactly how this government gets away with its constant incompetence. Just blindly lock onto 'doing something nice for the old people' and throw in some patronising story about how good your 100 year old relative is at doing their emails.

Then ignore it when the government gives the contract to a tory donor, or a wives company which they have just set up this week then does a piss poor job of actually delivering anything or any continued support. Get Hancock on the news with a permfrown accusing anybody critical of hating old people and repeating 'I wont apologise for rewarding enterprise' (i.e my mates company we set up specifically for this).

Brilliant idea, my mother who I would class as elderly and not at all technically minded brought an iPad earlier this year, it has given her hours of entertainment and has kept her in touch with family. Also grow up, offensive nicknames aren’t funny.

CherryPavlova · 27/09/2020 16:08

Most care homes are already doing this.

Who is he paying to provide them is a more important question. No contracts thus far have required tendering; all handed to cronies. Where are the millions handed to Dyson for ventilators?

Hancock said he’d give all care workers a badge. They only appeared where care home providers had bought them. They were always available for purchase.

It’s a sham.

Baaaahhhhh · 27/09/2020 16:11

Sorry, but this is just bullshit. There have been thousands of contracts for all sorts of things, some tendered, some not because of time constraints. If you already have a contractor doing similar work, you just increase the scope. And they have not all been handed to cronies. DH's company is very involved, and it a labour party donor.... so much crap on MN.

user1471565182 · 27/09/2020 16:33

Suggest you have a read of this stuff then call it bullshit, Baaah

www.independent.co.uk/voices/boris-johnson-dominic-cummings-michael-gove-corruption-cabinet-government-a9633941.html

'The value of state contracts for work related to the Covid-19 crisis and given without proper competitive tender is now well over the billion-pound mark.

It comes as no surprise that one of the smaller contracts, worth just under £1m and signed off by Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove, was to test “the government’s coronavirus messaging”, with a side order of testing messaging on “EU exit” – the one thing the Johnson government actually cares about.

Now put to one side whether taxpayers should pay for nightly focus groups (no, they shouldn’t), and take a look at who got the contract. A company called Public First, owned by married couple James Frayne and Rachel Wolf. Frayne was Gove’s director of communications at the Department for Education, alongside political adviser Cummings. And guess whose “charity” got a nice half-million-quid contract to help Gove pursue his “free schools” plan? Rachel Wolf. That’s 20 new teachers’ starting salaries to you and me. Still at least it gave Wolf enough security to free up the time needed to help write the Tories’ 2019 election manifesto, and get that oven-ready Brexit deal centre stage.'

@trappedsincesundaymorn

Seriously, you honestly think that 11000 ipads for 22000 care homes is a good decision? How in the world do you think giving someone with dementia a tablet is better than allowing actual contact with a family member?

As a personal anecdote I have been having contact with my mum, who has advanced dementia , by way of an iPad app which her carers set up for us. It has been brilliant for me to see how mum has been getting on , including observing interactions between her and her carers whereby I can see she is happy there . We have been doing this since March.

I have only been able to have visit with her in person in between lockdown lifting , and then being reintroduced in her area. As I had to wear a mask and sit at a distance I didn't find the visit to be helpful either to me, or to my mum, who didn't even realise it was me until I pulled the mask down . And distancing meaning I wasn't able to hold her hand or anything .

Obviously a meeting where we could have proper physical contact and she could see who I was would be the ideal , but if that isn't going to happen I just wanted to share that I had found video link to be helpful , even with mum's dementia .

Ok so some long established contracts have been tendered pre current legislative changes. Time constraints are nothing to do with other contracts given to donors. Globus Shetland have donated more than £400,000 to the Conservatives, and they have landed a £93 million Government contract for the supply of FFP3 respirator face masks, without any tendering. Randox, received £133million for Covid testing. It pays Tory MP and former Cabinet minister Owen Paterson £8,333 a month as an advisor

Two contracts for the delivery of hand sanitiser were awarded to Taeg Energy Limited, on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The first contract began and ended on 19 April – at a time when 1,000 people a day were dying in the UK from COVID-19 – suggesting the delivery of one bulk order. The value of this contract was £4.208 million and was replicated the very next day through a second, identical contract. However, just a couple of months before these huge contracts were awarded, on 25 February Companies House published Taeg Energy’s accounts, listing the firm as dormant. The Companies House records show that the business has just one director, Matthew Gowing, and has been dormant since May 2017. In fact, the company doesn’t seem to have traded at all since it was founded in May 2016,
The Government has also given Coronavirus contracts worth nearly £1 million to Public First – a public affairs company founded by a former colleague of Dominic Cummings and the co-author of the 2019 Conservative Manifesto. Plus a £3 million deal with Topham Guerin – the firm employed by the Conservatives to run social media during the election – to help with online COVID-19 communications.

Shall I go on? Look at Dysons performance and contract.

CloudyGladys · 27/09/2020 17:01

Unfortunately, it's coming a bit late, will not be helpful to everyone and the supply lines may be no better than those for school laptops, but that
does not mean it is not a good idea and does not justify the name-calling.

Given that visiting care homes is not possible, what other suggestions do you have?

Jocasta2018 · 27/09/2020 17:29

I've been Skyping my Mum in her care home since lockdown began. They use an iPad, you book a time, and the carer helps you chat. Mum has dementia - she recognises that it's me on the screen & she's an old pro now.
We've also been doing garden visits - a bit of confusion as there's me in my mask & she doesn't understand why I have to stay so far away from her.
Sometimes she's happier Skyping as she can see me without a mask & she doesn't want to hug me when I'm on a screen! (But she does when we're in the garden)

Patchworkpatty · 27/09/2020 18:00

Ummm now let me think why this might be a good idea in a pandemic that kills the elderly in higher rates than any others... rather than have people come in to a care home with the virus ..

Really OP ? No idea ? Could it perhaps be that you can't contract a virus over Wi-fi ?? but still get to see and talk to your loved one .

BikeTyson · 27/09/2020 18:01

He’s a dick, but it’s a good idea.

It’s a very good idea but disingenuous for Hancock to claim it as his own. Many homes have been doing this for months. As to whether they’ll appear.......time will tell.
Theluggage15 · 27/09/2020 18:09

There are many distressed elderly people in care homes for whom an iPad will be no substitute for visits from families. Unfortunately they don’t seem to matter to people as long as their own relation is ok. There is no name bad enough for the disgusting and useless let’s give my mates a contract Wanksock. Utterly bizarre that people are so po faced at calling a politician a name. I’m pretty offended that he’s fucking useless. Wanksock, wankcock, Wankjob all seem to suit him.

GoldenOmber · 27/09/2020 18:15

Well of course it matters that people are suffering, this is absolutely awful for so many people in care homes and their families, but why does that mean that it isn’t a good thing to provide iPads for the people who will benefit from them?

Just because it’s a policy from a Tory doesn’t make it automatically a terrible idea. Yes they’re a criminally incompetent omnishambles of a government but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/09/2020 18:17

Many countries have had issues in care homes, I assume most countries aren't allowing unrestricted visiting. Even the fabled Sweden had an unmitigated disaster in care homes.

Well it does seem churlish to leave out Dido. Who despite being a serving politicion under a party whip was put in a Civil Service role which is a direct conflict of interest. Whose husband is on a think tank promoting, amongst other things, insurance based health care alternatives to the NHS.

Or her position on the jockey club board along with Rose Patterson, wife of Tory MP Owen. Or the significant donations from jockey club and racing industry figures to Matt Hancock, MP for Newmarket.

No connection I'm sure with Cheltenham races being given the go ahead just before we went into lockdown - 350K people in close proximity who then travelled back all over the country. No connection either, I'm sure, with Doncaster races going a head recently whilst other sporting events were stopped.

And obviously her position in charge of the new public health body is completely logical considering her lack of experience in medicine, health care, epidemioloogy or any medical related field.

StarCat2020 · 27/09/2020 19:09

iPads great idea. Funded by the taxpayer, no. A lot of these care homes are private organisations, many making loads of money, charging 1000's, they should have a pool of these for use by residents who cannot afford one of their own. Same with PPE, it was a disgrace that many did not have sufficient PPE and then moaned about the government
Looking at the Companies House records and the CQC reports on some care homes really opened my eyes

Smileyoriley · 27/09/2020 19:28

Absolutely. This idiot needs sacking ASAP

Khajit · 27/09/2020 19:31

It's not a bad idea necessarily. My gran was in her 80s when she got her iPad and family who live further away used to facetime her on it. She didn't have dementia, just wasn't very mobile so she could use its basic features well enough.

Khajit · 27/09/2020 19:33

I agree with pp that most homes have probably bought their own though so it's a bit late (like everything about the governments response to covid).

PinkBuffalo · 27/09/2020 19:35

My mum in a nursing home, she is young no Dementia but Is severely disabled Requiring 24 hour care.
She would struggle to use anything like an iPad etc cos her hands are bad, but like others have said this could be a good thing as lots of people in mums place would benefit from this in some way. Maybe even mum if someone helped her use it!
(I hate the government most of the time so not just saying this!)

bumblingbovine49 · 27/09/2020 19:42

My elderly mother loved her tablet. She played solitaire and had calls with grandchildren ( when her hands couldn't hold the cards any more as too arthritic, she could still tap the screen ). She also watched films/ programmes we downloaded for her which were selected for her interests instead of the TV in the home which only had live terrestrial channels so no recording function etc.
