Matt Hancocks latest "bright" idea. Just what an elderly dementia/stroke sufferer needs to make them happy. The man's a fool.

Apple support were brilliant when my grandmother phoned to ask for help because she'd somehow managed to lose all her emails.
The "lovely girl" asked permission to remotely access her ipad and sorted it all out for her.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 27/09/2020 14:06

'Yes, and masks, aprons and gloves that I have to wear at work. Maybe I should have pointed out that my reply contained sarcasm.'

Please tell me you aren't a carer op? Surely not because if so you would be applauding this.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 27/09/2020 14:08

OP - Do you have an agenda? Do you work in a care home, and don't want to bothered with this?? I note you have said you wear full PPE at work. Just asking

I don't have an agenda no, sorry to disappoint. I wear full ppe as I work with vulnerable people in the community. I spend a lot of time helping them access face time (for many it's their only form of communicating as they are deaf or blind), so it's not that I can't be bothered with it. My issue is that I have seen many of those I work with sobbing their hearts out that their only contact is a voice which doesn't sound the same on a screen, or a face staring at them. All they want is to be allowed to see those they love in person, even if it means they can't hug them and they have to SD.

I believe that rather than give those in care homes £400 ipads it would be a lot kinder to allow visitors and provide adequate protection.

'believe that rather than give those in care homes £400 ipads it would be a lot kinder to allow visitors and provide adequate protection.'

The cost of ppe would soon mount up. Then would you say Matt 'Wankcock' had wasted all the ppe?

I think it is a 'lot kinder' to keep visitors away for now.

MrsDrudge · 27/09/2020 14:12

No one thinks that giving a elderly person an iPad is better than human contact @trappedsincesundaymorn but it is preferable to giving them Covid. Not everyone in care homes is living with strokes or dementia and some might find it reassuring to speak to and see a relative albeit on a screen, and in addition some elderly people might enjoy learning to use a tablet.

daisyjgrey · 27/09/2020 14:21

I mean, the man is an idiot, but at least its something I suppose?

Castiel07 · 27/09/2020 14:23

I think its a good idea as well, my mum is in one and only in her 60s but need 24 hour care because of MS.

StripyHorse · 27/09/2020 14:26

'Up to' 11,000 iPads.

I think it will be a lifeline for many families who can't physically meet, especially as it gets colder and outside meet ups won't happen (my grandmother's former home have set up a kind of awning with a clear plastic partition that people can book to have a socially distanced meet up in the garden).

But I have some reservations....

  1. It sounds like a headline grabbing statement that won't match up to the reality, just like the laptops for students. Especially as 'up to' implies that will be the maximum but the reality will probably be less.
  2. Will there be a tendering process to supply them, or will it somehow be administered in such a way that one of their mates manages to make a profit from it?
  3. Isn't there an option to use a different, cheaper brand and therefore supply more? If all you need it for is to use zoom etc. then surely a more cost effective option would be sufficient, meaning 22000 could be supplied for the same price.
  4. I worry that it is a distraction technique to sound like he cares about care homes, while simultaneously discharging covid patients into the homes (again!).
Friendsoftheearth · 27/09/2020 14:28

Foul name calling, can't get beyond that.

Jenasaurus · 27/09/2020 14:32

TBF Hancock is doing something to bridge the loneliness and if it helps one elderly person feel like they can connect to loved ones thats good isnt it.

StarCat2020 · 27/09/2020 14:33

Should be Android (or other brand) rather than iPads.

I had a look at the Companies House records for some care homes back in March when some were complaining about the cost of PPE.

It was eye-opening.

HeresMe · 27/09/2020 14:33

Foul name calling, can't get beyond that

You can get beyond Hancock and the goverment are responsible for thousands of deaths in care homes though, that's what's more worring.

HeresMe · 27/09/2020 14:35

Should be Android (or other brand) rather than iPads

Absolutely let's choose most expensive tablet, rather than provide 3 times as many.

cansu · 27/09/2020 14:40

This actually really annoys me as it is missing the point. Many people is care homes need the physical presence of their relatives. hey do not respond well to screens and telephones. I have a ds with asd and learning difficulties and have been asked about zoom and skype. It is completely meaningless to him. He cannot converse as he is non verbal. He does however need to have me visit him, walk with him, bring him treats and talk to him face to face. If I thought an ipad was the answer, he would have one.

nosswith · 27/09/2020 14:40

I disagree with the suggestion that Matt Hancock has lost his mind. He has been out of his depth from the very beginning and should be replaced as he cannot cope with the job.

As should almost everyone else in the cabinet.

Underhisi · 27/09/2020 14:41

Giving "up to 11000" probably means none.

m0therofdragons · 27/09/2020 14:42

Having seen the public’s inability to wear ppe properly I think the safest thing to do is restrict visits. I don’t think anyone believes video calls are the same or better than face to face but needs must!

Underhisi · 27/09/2020 14:43

He could have a word with the care homes that are banning window visits.

C8H10N4O2 · 27/09/2020 14:59

The idea is good and its also not his idea. Some care homes have used devices for video calls for a long time and a number of charities sponsor them and have called for this type of initiative.

However, I'll believe it when I see it happening. All the trumpeting about providing laptops and kit for disadvantaged children turned into precious little beyond a PR stunt.

StarCat2020 · 27/09/2020 15:03

When I did teacher training it made me so mad to see schools buying iPads as a default.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 27/09/2020 15:09

I detest the Conservative party and this current Government has blood on their hands in my opinion (not trying to start a debate on that because some will agree and some won't - but that is my opinion) But I still think this is a great idea, and no I don't have a parent in a care home. An ill thought out OP I think.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/09/2020 15:10

I’ve used cheaper tablets at work and they are rubbish. At least every iPad we’ve had in this house fucking works out the box.

Keepdistance · 27/09/2020 15:10

Could they not have connected smart tvs if the homes have those. As less likely to be damaged.

savetti · 27/09/2020 15:14

Oh ffs
They’re not just going to hand over iPads and say off you go. The carers would set up the convo and facilitate. Like some are doing now.
AND Not everyone in a care home has dementia

monkeyonthetable · 27/09/2020 15:29

@GetOffYourHighHorse - I wasn't saying it shouldn't happen, I was saying it was unlikely to happen, given the schedule of most workers in care homes. There's a difference. Hmm
