Matt Hancocks latest "bright" idea. Just what an elderly dementia/stroke sufferer needs to make them happy. The man's a fool.

How rude you are.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 27/09/2020 12:54

(Sorry that was directed at OP, not the last poster!)

GoldenOmber · 27/09/2020 12:55

Just what an elderly dementia/stroke sufferer needs to make them happy.

Well yes, for a lot of people. Have you known many ‘dementia/stroke sufferer’s? There are a lot of people in care homes who’d really benefit from this.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 27/09/2020 12:56

OP you are assuming that there isn’t an iPad or similar in any care home.

I’m guessing that there are 1000’s. This will just ensure that everyone has a chance of using one, not just those who currently have one.

I’m no Tory and tbh I loathe them, but this is a good idea.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 27/09/2020 12:56

Personally I think it's a great idea. We have had iPads on our wards at the hospital since the beginning of covid and it's been amazing for when we've had no visiting

dottiedodah · 27/09/2020 12:56

I personally dont care for the man .However I feel this is a good idea,Somewhat better than last weeks Track and Trace App .which apparently doesnt work on many older phones or Android .Faced with this dilemma, Hancock simply shrugged off the problem by suggesting we all update our phones! (Yes Mr H and in the middle of a pandemic when thousands of people have lost their jobs!)on BBC Breakfast show!

nosswith · 27/09/2020 12:57

How many Covid tests could be provided with that money? Or employment of a medical professional to run the test and trace service.

catherinep80 · 27/09/2020 12:58

"Wankcock"? I thought we were all adults on this forum? That's the kind of thing I'd expect my 16 year old son to come up with and find it amusing.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 27/09/2020 12:58

The idea is okish, yes some would rather see their families and take the risk but others won't want or be able to, but why ipads at £600 a pop instead of a kindle or similar that will use the same apps and do the same job for £30/40.

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2020 12:59

Dottie, I think he meant update as in go to the settings on your phone and update it to the latest version of the operating software. Then you can download the app. Not buy a new phone.

PermanentMarkerSniffer · 27/09/2020 12:59

A rare half-decent idea from the government, credit where credit's due.

Estrellente · 27/09/2020 13:00

Jesus, there really is nothing that people won’t have a pop at on here.

They don’t need one each ffs. And no, it won’t be the right solution for everyone. But it will be a godsend for some of our oldest, most vulnerable people and that’s good enough for me.

JudgeRindersMinder · 27/09/2020 13:01

I agree OP it’s a shit idea.

wonkylegs · 27/09/2020 13:02

I think the key words in that tweet are 'up to', knowing how economic they've been with the truth in the past 12 months I think up to probably means 10 maybe 20 will be handed over with accompanying press photos and then they will quietly drop the whole idea
Or they will pay a private company for the distribution and somehow it'll cost loads but not many will make it into elderly folks hands

Horehound · 27/09/2020 13:02

Out if all the stuff the government have done, this is not the thing to be concerned about.

Abraid2 · 27/09/2020 13:02

@ineedaholidaynow

Many families may probably have provided their relatives with an iPad etc already to help with this. This scheme is to help fill in the gaps, but unfortunately, like the school laptop scheme it will fall short of the numbers required.
My father had his own iPad and lots of other residents did too. Because of physical disabilities he needed help to use FaceTime as his fingers didn’t work. His mind was in sharp condition.
Dominicgoings · 27/09/2020 13:03

Many nursing home staff have been using their own phones to video call family members. Some homes have already invested in their own tablets etc for this very purpose.
Not every nursing home resident will want/be able to take part in video calls so no need for one each.
Elderly people being taken to sit outside in the cold as we approach autumn and winter is not going to work for many of them.
Not the worst idea the governments had but if course there will always be critics.

CatkinToadflax · 27/09/2020 13:04

My dad died with dementia in a care home in mid April. My brother and I hadn’t seen him since February and my mum didn’t see him in his last 5 weeks. The day before he died one of the nurses (who were bloody brilliant) brought a phone into his room and called my mum so she could talk to him. He couldn’t speak or respond but my mum is certain he recognised her voice. I will treasure that nurse’s kindness forever. An iPad would have made it even better for both of my parents.

MrsExpo · 27/09/2020 13:06

Sounds good to me. Just need to make it happen now.

Happyotamus · 27/09/2020 13:06

Great idea, they already have done this in several critical care units before and during the pandemic.

Sobeyondthehills · 27/09/2020 13:07

I loath this government and think they are incompetent, however I am unsure what your problem is with this plan. If you can't see your relative surely getting something is better than nothing.

This is one of their better ideas.

AutumnSuns · 27/09/2020 13:08

Fuck sake OP!
Of course it’s a good idea.
Even if it’s only one iPad per care home, of course them FaceTiming their loved ones is better than no contact or loved ones go to visit and you know, spreading the virus and wiping out the entire population of the care home.

AutumnSuns · 27/09/2020 13:08

And disclaimer I am against most of what this government are doing, I want to live in New Zealand but tHis idea is ok.

chrislilleyswig · 27/09/2020 13:08

Brilliant idea

When my parent was in hospital we kept in touch via iPad and FaceTime

Not sure what the issue is, unless OP wanted to try out the oh so clever nickname and get lots of virtual pats on the back for her sparkling wit. Rather like the SNP followers who talk about Dross and westmonster. A bit embarrassing really

trappedsincesundaymorn · 27/09/2020 13:08

Have you known many ‘dementia/stroke sufferer’s

Yes I have thanks for asking. None of whom would have been able to have a private conversation using a bit of tech as they wouldn't have been able to operate it without help. I don't know about some of you on here but when I used to visit my aunt we would chat in her room away from everybody else because privacy was important to her and she didn't want the rest of the home knowing her business particularly when she was having a bad day.
