Matt Hancocks latest "bright" idea. Just what an elderly dementia/stroke sufferer needs to make them happy. The man's a fool.

Most care homes already have devices for facilitating contact. What they lack is the amount of staff time required to make those calls. The residents are, in the main, unable to use the device, see the screen very well, hear the conversation and so on. I’ve had 2 relatives in this situation and both needed constant support from a member of staff.

It would be a good idea to let care homes apply for the iPads if they need them. The schools are a separate issue. If they need them they should have them.

Brieminewine · 27/09/2020 13:09

Our hospital had done the same as it’s no visiting allowed, it’s gone down really well with family and patients.

Dominicgoings · 27/09/2020 13:09

OP how many loved ones do you currently have in nursing homes?

notangelinajolie · 27/09/2020 13:09

Quite rude OP.
It's a great idea - my 82 year old FIL is currently in hospital.

We've sent an ipad in for him to use and it's helped him massively.
Visiting is extremely limited and only my DH is allowed to see him. He's been in for nearly 3 weeks and my DH has seen him just twice.
Of course ipads aren't going to benefit everyone but for those that can take advantage the benefits are invaluable.

My sixth-form teacher best friend has had to spend her own money on a laptop and camera setup that will allow her to teach online and fully 20% of her students have essentially dropped out because they don't have any way to access the lessons at home. Also, my husband's dad is far too gone in his dementia to use an iPad and I'm sure he's not the only one. But by all means, carry on, Matt. Keep the pubs open so your pub conglomerate donors stay happy and ensure that no one has any way to socialise that doesn't involve spending money, with the added bonus of the further breakdown and division of society.

Yet only 11000 tablets. So for everyone saying it's a good idea....who decides who gets one then. There are more than 11000 care home residents in London alone, so it's not actually helping at all with the loneliness of the majority is it? So not only do the vast majority not get to see their loved ones in the flesh a huge number won't get to see them on a screen either

Well obviously they aren't going to be given to each and every individual of every single care home. There will be one communal device per care home (if they don't have the funds to purchase themselves). And, just like the telephone, would be used as and when requested by a resident, no doubt with the help of care staff and which will be thoroughly sanitised between uses. Don't know why you seem to think this would still mean that the majority will not get to see their loved ones?

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 27/09/2020 13:12

Jesus Christ. Not everyone in a care home has dementia. Did you watch Captain Tom's interview with Piers Morgan? 100 years old, orders his own things online and looking to travel to America next year. Don't be so patronising.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 27/09/2020 13:16

His idea is a bit late, the local Social services where I am already gave our home two ipads so we could facetimes for residents and families back in March. We also use them so the doctors can see patients and for team meetings with socialworkers, doctors and psychaitrists.

MitziK · 27/09/2020 13:17

@PuppyMonkey

Dottie, I think he meant update as in go to the settings on your phone and update it to the latest version of the operating software. Then you can download the app. Not buy a new phone.
Which kind of proves he knows Jack Shit about technology, then.

Take earlier generation iPads, for example. They're essentially expensive paperweights, as apps need a particular range of iOS to work that the older ones don't have. They were useless by the time iOS 10 came in.

LemonTT · 27/09/2020 13:18

@cologne4711

Not a stupid idea at all, but I am still unclear why someone can't meet an elderly relative (well wrapped up against the cold weather) outside.
I think I can having spent a long time in homes.
QualityFeet · 27/09/2020 13:19

Can we have the school laptops too then?

Strawberrycreamsundae · 27/09/2020 13:20

@CuppaZa

As someone who’s elderly grandparent is in a care home, I think it’s a wonderful idea. Any excuse for some to start name calling and poo-pooing though eh Wink
I have a very elderly DM in a care home and it’s a great idea! She’ll be able to see not only her dcs but also the grandchildren. Any excuse for a bout of name calling 🙄; shame on you.
MsKeats · 27/09/2020 13:20

I think it is a fab idea. Also calling someone "wankcock" and using their name to abuse them on a public forum-would you like it OP ?

user1471565182 · 27/09/2020 13:22

oh they do love a gimmick dont they. I wonder which mate/spouse they will be outsourcing this sweet little earner to.

AldiAisleofCrap · 27/09/2020 13:23

@trappedsincesundaymorn How in the world do you think giving someone with dementia a tablet is better than allowing actual contact with a family member?
Because iPads don’t transmit Covid19.

Wroxie · 27/09/2020 13:23

Hancock must have cherry-flavoured boots, the way some of you carry on.

CuppaZa · 27/09/2020 13:25

@LiveFromHome, the home my grandparent is in already has an ipad, and residents have been able to see and speak to family members since March.
Many homes, especially private ones, will already have this technology in place (even if it’s just thr one iPad). It would be great if other homes could benefit from the idea as well.
As to whether it happens or not...I was merely commenting on the fact that many residents would benefit from being able to see a loved ones face whilst they chat.

Haworthia · 27/09/2020 13:25

This is great. My grandmother was able to FaceTime my mum from her care home during lockdown. Admittedly, she had advanced dementia and didn’t really know what was going on, but it was reassuring for my mum to see she was OK (I’m using past tense because she died a few weeks ago).

GetOffYourHighHorse · 27/09/2020 13:25

'How in the world do you think giving someone with dementia a tablet is better than allowing actual contact with a family member?'

Well it isnt better is it, but it's surely better than nothing. Many, many elderly people are perfectly able to use technology and I would imagine the staff looking after those suffering with dementia would be the best people to judge who would benefit from using one.

rosesandcashmere · 27/09/2020 13:26

It's a good idea. Honestly, some people will see the bad in anything. Get a grip.

I think you’re the one totally out of touch here Op.

ktp100 · 27/09/2020 13:28

Not the worst idea, especially as contact with family could kill them. Lots of younger grandparents got by on videos from grandkids over lockdown so why not the very elderly?

As an aside, Hancock is both a wanker and a cock so fair play.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 27/09/2020 13:29

Because iPads don’t transmit Covid19

Would you share one with somebody else then?
