Matt Hancocks latest "bright" idea. Just what an elderly dementia/stroke sufferer needs to make them happy. The man's a fool.

Yeah I think youve rushed to start a thread to be the first to pick at something before realising its actually a GOOD thing. Better luck next time.
My grandad was in a care home with dementia. This would have been great for him.

FubsyRanbler · 27/09/2020 12:37

@cologne4711

Not a stupid idea at all, but I am still unclear why someone can't meet an elderly relative (well wrapped up against the cold weather) outside.
Did that earlier this week, and despite being well wrapped-up in the SE, it was bloody freezing for her, and we quit after 10 minutes.
Putmynewshoeson · 27/09/2020 12:38

I can see where he's going with it but this form of communication would further confuse my Nan who is in a care home with dementia

trappedsincesundaymorn · 27/09/2020 12:39

@FubsyRanbler

There are thousands of elderly people in care homes that don’t have dementia. My mother being one of them.
Yet only 11000 tablets. So for everyone saying it's a good idea....who decides who gets one then. There are more than 11000 care home residents in London alone, so it's not actually helping at all with the loneliness of the majority is it? So not only do the vast majority not get to see their loved ones in the flesh a huge number won't get to see them on a screen either.
OP posts:
vodkaredbullgirl · 27/09/2020 12:39

We have been doing this for months, with some of our residents.

Bluntness100 · 27/09/2020 12:40

@trappedsincesundaymorn

Seriously, you honestly think that 11000 ipads for 22000 care homes is a good decision? How in the world do you think giving someone with dementia a tablet is better than allowing actual contact with a family member?
Because they are particularly at risk if they get Covid, and they want the contact to remain. So this is a good solution. Clearly not if the person has advanced dementia but if they know and recognise their loved one, then this contact, whilst ensuring they are protected is an excellent idea.
Bluntness100 · 27/09/2020 12:41

Op, they don’t need one each.

What’s your beef here, it’s a good idea.

FubsyRambler · 27/09/2020 12:41

The care home has ownership, and just like in schools, the equipment can be timetabled for those that don’t have their own stuff. Many of the residents have their own tech.

lljkk · 27/09/2020 12:42

I'm another one who can support, but make it a cheap tough tablet. Not iPad.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 27/09/2020 12:43

Ha ha ha. The OP thinks they are funny with a play on words on Hancock's name and then can't even spell 'mind'. Grin

Not everyone in a care home has dementia or suffered a stroke. I think it's a brilliant idea. At least, this way, residents will have some contact with family and friends.

ThatDamnScientist · 27/09/2020 12:43

@CuppaZa

As someone who’s elderly grandparent is in a care home, I think it’s a wonderful idea. Any excuse for some to start name calling and poo-pooing though eh Wink
Honestly, are we supposed to just go "oh what a wonderful and kind gesture, what a kind caring government!" Well, Fuck that!

They spout loads of things that they don't follow through with, see upthread about the laptops/technology that they promised to some of the poorest children who had no way to access their education. They deserve every name they get called. They make promise after promise to some of the poorest, vulnerable, struggling members of our communities, never following through and then to cover up their inadequacies they add more empty promises to the mix.

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/09/2020 12:44

@LiveFromHome

Aren't there about 23000 care homes in the UK.

So not even one iPad per home. Hmm

Yeah, well done. Great idea.

This 100%

I think it’s terrible

AntiHop · 27/09/2020 12:44

You sound ignorant about people who live in care homes. Many people in care homes would really value a video chat with their loved ones. Yes someone who is in the late stages of dementia would probably not benefit, but many people in care homes would.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/09/2020 12:44

Many families may probably have provided their relatives with an iPad etc already to help with this. This scheme is to help fill in the gaps, but unfortunately, like the school laptop scheme it will fall short of the numbers required.

lljkk · 27/09/2020 12:45

Do most care homes have wifi? Or would the tablet be tethered off of a manager's mobile?

countrygirl99 · 27/09/2020 12:46

There are some this will help a lot but many elderly people do not find video contact any sort of substitute for real contact. My own MIL finds video or telephone calls very distressing as she cannot speak following a stroke.

LiveFromHome · 27/09/2020 12:46

As someone who’s elderly grandparent is in a care home, I think it’s a wonderful idea.

Then I genuinely hope your grandparent isn't in one of the 50% of care homes in the UK that won't receive one - even if the 11,000 iPads materialise in the first place.

I remember their promises about laptops for some of the poorest kids in the UK. Hmm

Lily193 · 27/09/2020 12:46

It's a great idea for care home residents who have called for this - this has been discussed widely in the media in my local area recently. Your use of the term 'dementia sufferer' is totally inappropriate.

TW2013 · 27/09/2020 12:47

I am still unclear why someone can't meet an elderly relative (well wrapped up against the cold weather) outside.

My mother wouldn't want to go outside, she would just refuse. She doesn't recognise me now and would see no reason to go outside with a stranger in the cold, however wrapped up she was. She would probably say that if 'that woman wants to see me she can come in here'. We live a long way from where she moved to so can't just pop up there for her to decide she didn't fancy leaving her room. She has no concept of the Coronavirus or pandemics. She does like to see me on Skype and see me in the garden or see my cats. She smiles and laughs at the stories and then says she has no recollection of any of it. My father is entirely nursed in his bed now. Hope that example makes it a bit clearer.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/09/2020 12:48

Most homes have WiFi. It’s a good idea.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/09/2020 12:48

I think it's a great idea. My Mam died alone in hospital, I never saw her in her last weeks due to Covid-19, this would have been amazing. I would have loved to tell her I loved her one more time.

pontypridd · 27/09/2020 12:48

I like the iPads idea. Don’t think they will ever appear though.

Wankcock’s a good name for him nevertheless.

CarrieBlue · 27/09/2020 12:51

Hope they appear quicker than the laptops for schools.

Iamanaubergine · 27/09/2020 12:52

They’re already doing this in my grandparents care home. My mum can book in for a call and it gives her peace of mind. She’d love to actually physically see my grandparent but this is the next best thing.

FubsyRambler · 27/09/2020 12:53

How many of the frothers and negative responders actually have relatives in care homes?
