And I bet he's desperate to tell everyone to stop being stupidly selfish.

Seeing the change in tone of this thread from adoration to scathing I can only assume it's late and Cumming's sycophantic sock puppets have gone to bed.

It's infuriating that Johnson repeatedly says NHS track and trace which is a lie as it's run by a private company Serco .

Becuna · 23/09/2020 02:20

@SomethingM1ss1ng

Looks like I need to watch his speech..never thought I’ll see a day when people think that Boris made sense
Me too. The man is an idiot and he will just have been reading something but it’s ok, it’s Boris.....
ilovesooty · 23/09/2020 02:25

I don't think he believed a word he was saying. His hands gave that away.

Marchitectmummy · 23/09/2020 02:37

He made a lot of sense to those who have been taking C19 seriously, The problem us those are not the people he needs to reach. Its all the people who can't be bothered and are too lazy to try to remember what have been throughout pretty simple rules, also needs to reach those who have lost interest in following guidance and then all of those who want to believe it doesnt exist.

His message covered calls to all of those groups but from comments following his speech those people are still too selfish to pay attention and do as asked.

HeIenaDove · 23/09/2020 02:44

Alan Johnson summed it up well on Newsnight.

DerbyLassie · 23/09/2020 03:01

I disagree. His speech was just him trying to be Churchillian and contained no details. Unless people are very actively searching, the new rules aren't clear. Why didn't his speech show a clear slide with all the new rules? Lots of people in the UK don't watch the news unfortunately so they shouldn't rely on people doing that to know what the new rules are.

Marchitectmummy · 23/09/2020 03:08

@DerbyLassie

If people don't watch the news are they really going to watch a speech? Unlikely I would imagine, which leaves it to MN and Facebook to spread information in an easy to understand and correct Manor.

DerbyLassie · 23/09/2020 03:11

More likely that they'll watch a one off speech by the PM than randomly switch on the news if they're not generally news followers.

notangelinajolie · 23/09/2020 03:19

Yes, of course he is right.
Those that seek to undermine him with cheap political digs should hang their heads in shame.

herecomesthsun · 23/09/2020 04:42

He's a right pillock?

We're right stuffed?

Anyone vulnerable is right up shit creek without a paddle?

Overwhelmed222 · 23/09/2020 06:25

Those that seek to undermine him with cheap political digs should hang their heads in shame.

He is not wrong to introduce more measures.

He is completely wrong to blame us for the R rate going up when it is government incompetence, mixed messaging and corruption throughout this entire pandemic that have left us in this situation.

That’s not a cheap political dig.

Just because he puts on a chummy tone doesn’t mean that he is in any way competent enough to be “governing“ our country through this crisis.

Juststopswimming · 23/09/2020 07:18

The only ones who should hang their heads in shame are the government. Oldest political trick in the book - get the peasants to turn on each other and we retain control.

Those saying what a great speech, we need more restrictions etc etc - do you really not think the track and trace and testing fiascos have contributed to this mess? Do you genuinely put all blame for this mess on people who have been having too much of a good summer?

FlyingFlamingo · 23/09/2020 07:24

@Unsure33 do you have the figures to prove that? And simply testing people isn’t enough - their contacts need to be effectively traced and told to isolate and in England the figures for that are quite frankly pathetic. Here is Wales local authorities and health boards have been supported to carry out our contact tracing and our figures are much better. Unfortunately the Welsh Government decided to also use the Lighthouse labs for testing which was a huge mistake, my health board has now started in house testing to improve the system so hopefully it’ll be easier to access tests and get quick results.

merrymouse · 23/09/2020 07:49

For us (where I live) we feel betrayed and lied to as we still have 0 cases!

How do you live in a small town that has never had any cases - is it on a remote island?

I have followed every rule and still think he was talking complete crap.

Mumratheevergiving · 23/09/2020 07:57

Agree much clearer in content & delivery than his earlier broadcasts.

Hope they find ways to get the message through to parts of the population that are not inclined to listen to Ministerial broadcasts.

Now the Government need to meet their pledge to get testing ramped up & we’ll be in a much better place to get through winter.

Frouby · 23/09/2020 07:58

I actually think the general public does need to take the blame.

It was eat out to help out in a socially distanced way.

You can go to the pub and meet people but again, in a socially distanced way.

You can see people at home. But anyone with half a brain should have realised that a houseparty would increase risks.

Everyone who has worked from home and enjoyed it didn't want to go back. Fair enough but if there is no good reason to be at home, go back to work in the office if your employer wants you in the office.

Everyone knows schools and unis were going back in September and it was everyones responsibility to keep infection rates low. We aren't children and shouldn't need to have rules spoonfed and a strict lockdown to make us aware that the virus hasn't gone. Just because we had the option to have house parties, shouldn't mean we have them every week for instance (looking at you nephew).

We've proven we need rules and restrictions to not be cunts basically.

merrymouse · 23/09/2020 08:01

and it is so boring to harp on about DC when he did not break SD rules and he had a vunerable child.

The drive to Barnard Castle definitely broke the rules in place at the time, on a weekend when the chief nurse had pleaded with the public to follow the rules.

While its true that he would have just received a warning and wouldn't have been fined, the pathetic lie about 'testing his eyesight' greatly undermined public trust.

All he had to do was apologise and admit that he had been wrong, but instead he came up with what must be one of the most ridiculous lies ever told - and the government explicitly backed the lie. It was breathtakingly incompetent.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/09/2020 08:08

@redlockscelt I read the transcript. I didn't watch it.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/09/2020 08:14

For us (where I live) we feel betrayed and lied to as we still have 0 cases!

I have been getting COVID messenger for the last few weeks and only on one day have I seen evidence of o cases in a borough so maybe no cases in your Town or village but not in your unitary authority. Our area is low but even here cases oer 100,000 have doubled.

redlockscelt · 23/09/2020 08:17

It's about time he took some serious action.
All summer they have messed around left right and center and said do this, don't do this, blamed anybody they can think of bar the NHS (unless I missed that bit) and faffed around while Rome burned.

At some point they need to sit up, stop prevaricating and get on with sorting out the mess without blaming others. If any of us were in our performance appraisal and lied and tried to shift blame in the way that the politicians and some of the advisers have done then we'd be on a targeted support/redeployment/being sacked plan.

Mumratheevergiving · 23/09/2020 08:27

@merrymouse Cummings left the epicentre of a disease and travelled across the country while symptomatic and ended up with his child and symptomatic wife going into a hospital in the NE. He knew full well this type of behaviour had spread the disease in Italy with people retreating to second homes. He then came up with an absolutely ludicrous excuse about testing his eyesight when visiting a beauty spot on his wife’s birthday. Then when many people didn’t buy the bullshit the Government put their efforts into forming a ‘protective ring’ around Cummings and in the most high handed manner telling the public to ‘move on’. MPs were inundated with complaints from their constituents. The way it was handled was a disgrace!

Johnson better make sure his inner circle comply with the rules this time around! They cannot ask from the British public what they are unwilling to do themselves. Lead by example.

@Frouby yes all those examples of greater contacts that were being encouraged to take place (fine) but then we have Dido Harding telling the select committee that no one could have predicted the increase demand for testing at the point Autumn term started! Total lack of foresight! So no it’s not the public’s fault and it was completely ridiculous my sister in law and a colleague in completely different parts of the country couldn’t get readily tested when they needed to and had to travel to other towns (that fortunately they had the means to do). The testing shambles has really let the public down at the point we most need it to work.

I think that everybody expected Matt Lucas Boris
twitter.com/realmattlucas/status/1259566662791106569?s=21
So it was refreshing to see him speaking like he was in control.
It makes Bake Off's intro
twitter.com/britishbakeoff/status/1308485512110510081?s=21
Seem a little unfair as he wasn't confusing for a change
