@Overwhelmed222

So pleased Italy is now doing comparatively well, not least because my elderly father lives there. And yes they do put us to shame.

But in Spain for example they have been very disciplined with their previous lockdown, and I don’t know what measures they have had in place since, or what accounts for their high rise in infections and now increasing deaths as well? Does anyone know?

Partly they think that the ridiculously harsh lockdown in spain meant that they have not got any herd immunity within the community.

Also they let nightclubs open over the summer (I'm not sure if this is still the case)

Those are the only two factors I know about for the rise there... happy to be re-educated!

PS I agree re other countries shaming us - we went to Madeira for a week in the summer, everyone arriving either had to take a test on arrival (with results received inside 12 hours) or have a negative test within 72 hours of arrival. OK, thats not going to capture everyone but the vast vast majority, surely? It felt so safe when we were there. If only we could've done something like that in the early summer...

Rome Fiumicino airport. I landed from Athens at 16:40. Did free Covid test at 17.10. Got results at 17.40 (negative). No Boris, the reason the UK’s infection rates are worse than Italy’s isn’t because Brits are “freedom-loving”. It’s because you and your government are shite.

@merrymouse

For us (where I live) we feel betrayed and lied to as we still have 0 cases!

How do you live in a small town that has never had any cases - is it on a remote island?

God I wish!! 😂😂 No I live in a small seaside town with a very elderly population that has been full with tourists since travelling restrictions were lifted and as far as I'm aware and everyone I know is (the local press would have a field day if there was!) we have had 0 case's! In my county yes we have had some but very low! Some weeks we get a 50% increase so it goes from e.g 8 to 16 but in the percentage per population it has been and continues even due to the massive influx from people from around the country very low.

derxa ppl HAVE been doing the right thing. Compliancy was high during lockdown. But if they keep gaslighting and accusing ppl of things they havent done ppl may well think they might as well do them then

And what happened to the masks that Hancock et al ordered that were no good for the NHS because they have ear loops (like the ones ive got from Boots) Why cant they be sent out to low income homes. DWP records make it possible to do.

I know the thread has moved on, but I can't believe people are saying Johnson did well last night, he was reading a script! Is this how low we set the bar now, the Prime Minister gets a pat on the back for being able to read and speak at the same time? Does it matter how he said it? People on MN generally don't like Boris or the Tories but would that prevent you from doing the right thing?

Yes I know they don’t care - it’s so depressing though. I keep on thinking surely they must want to govern well - but they obviously have no notion of this.

Then they gaslight us by calling it a world beating track and trace system. Boris lies and lies and lies. And tells us the matter is “closed” when he doesn’t feel he should be accountable - which is always.

They are loathsome.

To answer the question "why outsource instead of using established local and NHS track and trace" my answer is: follow the money.
The corrupt Tory party have been doling out contracts with no oversight for months, first for PPE and then for track and trace.
Do you really think Johnson, Scummings, Rees-Smug and the like care if the plebs live or die? As long as they are lining their pockets they don't give a stuff.

"Instead of outsourcing to tier upon tier of private companies, this Tory government should have put money into our public services which know local communities better, and are far more efficient.“

What is the matter with the government that they can’t do this? Why do they have this complete aversion to using Local Authorities and health bodies to run this at borough level?

Exclusive: Serco Have Subcontracted Contact Tracing Jobs To The Company Embroiled In The Tax Credits Scandal And Debt Collection Companies

The firm behind last year’s tax credits scandal as well as companies linked to debt collection services are among those who have been handed contact tracing roles by Serco, PoliticsHome can reveal.

The outsourcing giant was handed a lucrative £108m contract earlier this year to run a major part of the government's contract tracing work, but has come under fire for subcontracting dozens of firms to conduct the bulk of the work.

In June, ministers confirmed that Serco had subcontracted approximately 9,000 staff out of the total 10,500 required to run the service to a panel of 29 subcontractors, but refused to reveal the list of firms because of commercial sensitivity.

But PoliticsHome can reveal that Concentrix, the US company behind a major tax credits debacle, are among those who have been handed contracts by Serco to provide staff to run the scheme.

Concentrix had been hired by HMRC in 2014 to tackle fraud and error in the tax credit system, but were removed just two years later following a swathe of complaints from MPs and claimants who had had their benefits reduced or halted by the firm

Ministers later admitted that 87% of the 36,000 people who lodged an appeal against the firm's rulings had their complaints upheld, while HMRC revealed that the cost of conducting mandatory reviews and closing the 181,000 cases left open by Concentrix had cost a further £30m in staff time.

Last year, the firm faced further criticism over their handling of the UK's Action Fraud call center after an investigation by The Times revealed staff handling calls had described fraud victims as "morons", "psychos" and "screwballs".

Speaking to MPs after the reports, then-civil service chief executive John Manzoni said officials would "make sure" the firm were not awarded further government work "unless they could persuade us that they had got better".

But despite the scandals, the company appears to have been contracted by Serco to run Tier 3 contact tracing services, which involves calling people who have come into close contact with an infected person and telling them to self-isolate.

Meanwhile, Serco have also handed contracts to two companies whose work is connected to debt collection services.

NCO Europe is a debt collection company that bills itself as “the UK's leading customer service provider, from Contact Solutions to creating Payment Plans”, while Arvato CRM UK says it delivers “award-winning customer service and back-office processing services for some of the world’s most respected brands”. It is part of the global network of Arvato, owned by Bertelsman. Its sister company, Arvato Financial Solutions, offers debt collection services.

Ministers have already faced criticism over the use of private firms to conduct contact tracing after it was revealed in August that the system had reached just 54% of people who had been in close contact with an infected person in the 20 worst-hit parts of the UK.

A spokesperson for Arvato declined to comment. A spokesperson for the Department for Health directed PoliticsHome to Serco. A spokesperson for the outsourcing firm said: “We went through a due diligence process for all our subcontractors that looked at their contact centre and customer service experience.

“Some of the subcontractors were already also on the Cabinet Office’s Crown Commercial Framework for Contact Centres.”

NCO Europe and Concentrix did not respond to requests for comment.

Responding to the story, shadow cabinet minister Rachel Reeves said: "As if continuing outsourcing to a company with such a bad track record wasn't enough, this government didn't even ensure that those it was subcontracting were up to the job.

"Instead of outsourcing to tier upon tier of private companies, this Tory government should have put money into our public services which know local communities better, and are far more efficient.

"With the testing system on the brink of collapse when we need it most, the government has serious questions to answer on why this subcontractor - embroiled in scandal and with a track record of failing government services - was given responsibility for part of one of the most systems in our country."

And as I've said before, while she's probably going to get dropped like a hot potato when it's convenient, there won't be any comeback for giving her a role she wasn't up to in the first place. Because the fault is twofold here: she did not appoint herself.

Boris said shielding the elderley and vulnerable would not work. Why not? If they don't let everyone else crack on and the economy crashes, there'll be no NHS to help anyone.

Too many essential workers, including hospital and school staff, are members of The Vulnerable Club (soon to be expanded when the Long Covid sufferers join). Diabetes, for example, is relatively common, particularly if you include the many people not yet diagnosed.

He did explain this.

If infection rates are high enough they can't be protected because you can't completely isolate carers.

Johnson says the attacks on Harding from Labour are unseeming. He says the government is going to get testing up to 500,000 per day. He says he wants to hear “more of the spirit of togetherness” that was on display yesterday.

Lmao I'm sure he fucking does! He's not so keen on the Opposition doing oppositioning.

Of course she is being attacked - she honestly suggested that there was no way to predict that there would be increased demand for testing in September.

If nothing else she could have just checked out the Mumsnet Coronavirus boards and registered how concerned people were.
