So pubs closing at 10 and no spectators at sports events. Seriously I stayed at home to watch that. I’m not saying I want more to be put in place and I’m under local restrictions in my area so can’t see friends and family, but the impression I got a the very least I was expecting BJ to say the rest of the country wouldn’t be allowed to meet with friends and family too. Like I said I don’t want that at all but I can’t believe all the hype of this speech just for that.

I’m not happy that it looks as though I’ll be working from home again. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my company will give us a choice but I doubt it

RhubarbTea · 22/09/2020 12:57

In my opinion they wanted to push through that kind of thing but rowed back at the last minute due to pressures/potential public reaction. I wonder if they are trying to unfold further restrictions in a slo-mo kind of way and so I think the rule of 6 will be changed soon, but they are just trying to manage peoples sense of crushing futility by drip feeding the restrictions little by little.

Qasd · 22/09/2020 12:58

Work from home if you can, that could have a huge impact since it was estimated that only 20 percent of the workforce was now compared to 40 percent at the height.

..I will accept I am a bit London centric on this one given the high level of public transport commuting in the capital it probably doesn’t have quite the same impact elsewhere.

Unfortunately I don’t think the measures announced today will make the slightest bit of difference. I suspect there will be more and more announcements over the coming days and weeks and today is just to soften everyone up.

Spied · 22/09/2020 12:59

I expected 2 households only whilst indoors across to he board.
I'm disappointed to be honest as I believe this would be a step in the right direction.

Wolke · 22/09/2020 12:59

I can't see anything he's said making much difference. Cue rising number of cases and misery for those working in the hospitality industry. These measures will please neither those asking for stricter measures nor those asking for relaxations.

Characters · 22/09/2020 12:59

The thing that stood out to me is that it's expected to last for over 6 months. That's what I shuddered at.

NiknicK · 22/09/2020 13:00

Yes I was thinking the same about the drip feeding. I wfh throughout all of this and returned last month. It won’t do any harm wfh again if have to but I understand it isn’t that easy for everyone.

covetingthepreciousthings · 22/09/2020 13:02

If it's going to be for 6 months.. I cannot see those being the only restrictions in that time frame. I think it's a drip feed.

How long was it before the lockdown measures came in back in March? Wasn't that a drip feed?

NiknicK · 22/09/2020 13:02

Aw yeah 6 months. To be honest I kind of expected this. We went into lockdown the day of my ds’s birthday and I remember saying to dh at the time that I bet we aren’t fully out of this by our ds’s next birthday.

Regarding meeting friends and family, cases are rising in so many counties now that it probably won't be long before 2/3 of the country are under tougher restrictions anyway.

Anyone who watched the scientists briefing yesterday would have heard them mention how important the next 6 months will be (they repeated it twice) so it didn't come as a shock that we'll be under more restrictions for that long. We need to get through winter and see where we are then.

slipperywhensparticus · 22/09/2020 13:04

Did he just rule out extending furlough? I couldn't tell?

NotquitewhatImeant · 22/09/2020 13:06

The thread title is exactly what I was thinking. All that hype for....

NiknicK · 22/09/2020 13:07

Lol yeah I thought it was rather fitting. I am slightly worried though that things won’t
Improve and they’re just easing us ok ready for tighter restrictions.

Totally agree ....... Trying to be positive perhaps that's when a vaccine program for all is expected.
MissDollyMix · 22/09/2020 13:08

I didn't see it but heard that all indoor sports are now restricted to the magical number 6 - do we think this will include children's activities? Thinking of DD's dance classes (and the £100 I've literally just spent on new dance shoes...)

Lindy2 · 22/09/2020 13:08

I'm glad retail and hospitality staff will need to wear masks too.

I know mask wearing is not fun but it has seemed ridiculous to me that customers wear masks but the staff, who are potentially in daily contact with 100s of people, don't.

CrunchyNutNC · 22/09/2020 13:09

I'm not wholly against this - I assume there will be review again in 1-2 weeks time. Presumably if things continue to deteriorate then it'll be tighter, but for now they're going for a more gradual approach.

Interesting to see if and when the next step happens.

GabsAlot · 22/09/2020 13:09

all this speculatin for that-seems very wet

can people not panic buy now theres no need

Lindy2 · 22/09/2020 13:10

MissDollyMix he did specifically say adult indoor sports. I'm assuming children's activities can carry on as now with the current social distancing rules.

TheQueef · 22/09/2020 13:10

Community spread is causing my local numbers to rise so I'm disappointed he didn't blanket ban households mixing.

cannotchange · 22/09/2020 13:13

Is that it ??????

I think it's pretty shit actually. The arts and hospitality sectors will not survive this 10pm curfew neither will town centres with everyone working from home again

I'm on furlough, I doubt my job will round for much longer

hopefulness · 22/09/2020 13:13

I just wished they would treat us like adults and tell us the long-term plan. I know it is all probably based on behaviour modelling and I 100% agree with previous posters that it they are "drip feeding" but I think if people knew what to expect we would all feel a little more relaxed and less on edge.

I just have no trust in the government. They back-track all the time and are pedantic with their wording to explain away the amount of U-turns they take. Back in March at the first conference they said they would not close schools, I think it was 8 days later schools closed. However because they were "technically" open still (for the small minority of students who had keyworker parents) in their books they didn't officially lie?

NiknicK · 22/09/2020 13:15

I’m sorry if I’ve offended any of you. I get what you’re saying about hospitality but most pubs (at least in my area) close at 11 so I can’t see 1 hour making much of a difference either in terms of a reduction in the virus spreading or financially for staff/owners.

He hasn't done enough imo, because we are failing on the testing front so no one knows wtf is going on.
