So pubs closing at 10 and no spectators at sports events. Seriously I stayed at home to watch that. I’m not saying I want more to be put in place and I’m under local restrictions in my area so can’t see friends and family, but the impression I got a the very least I was expecting BJ to say the rest of the country wouldn’t be allowed to meet with friends and family too. Like I said I don’t want that at all but I can’t believe all the hype of this speech just for that.

You’re not the only one. I have no faith in the government either. I know that decisions have to be taken carefully but if they know roughly where this is going then they should say and as least then we could prepare.

I read on bbc website that the 10pm closing means restaurants won’t be able to take bookings for 9pm as everyone has to be out by 10pm. So lots of revenue lost there

Fortyfifty · 22/09/2020 13:18

I was pleased with the announcement. Also shows he can speak in a normal tone of voice when he wants to and is well prepared.

toolatetooearly · 22/09/2020 13:19

fucking hell, 50% of mumsnet are people declaring they'll break any extra draconian restrictions forced upon them, while the other 50% are people complaining that these restrictions are useless and they haven't gone far enough

NiknicK · 22/09/2020 13:19

Yes I thought that he came across better at the beginning of his speech but then he started with the um’s and uh’s once people started to question him.

Yes I did notice he sounded less idiotic than usual Grin
NiknicK · 22/09/2020 13:20

To be honest I’m not in either camp. I was simply surprised as I thought he may have introduced some different restrictions like not meeting with friends and family.

I just wished they would treat us like adults and tell us the long-term plan.

You're assuming there is a long term plan? I get the distinct impression that there is only short term "if this happens then we could do this" type plans.

IncidentsandAccidents · 22/09/2020 13:25

I think the government know that these restrictions will make very little difference. Today is political theatre - a big show so that they can blame the public when things continue to get worse and they have to put much more unpopular restrictions in place.

Dustballs · 22/09/2020 13:27

@MissDollyMix - I've read it's only for adult (indoor) team sports.

I get the adult bit, but not the team sports bit. Maybe it's because team sports usually involve close proximity and some contact.

AlwaysLatte · 22/09/2020 13:28

The shocker for me was the minimum 6 months. It's But I had expected stricter measures, such as a short sharp full lockdown.

I think this is the 'you're not getting half your pocket money this week speech'. The you're all grounded speech is next week.

Well that's probably because it's a new virus and no one can really predict what's going to happen in the future. Better to be flexible and adapt to the situation as it changes.
Lockdownseperation · 22/09/2020 13:29

@cannotchange

Is that it ??????

I think it's pretty shit actually. The arts and hospitality sectors will not survive this 10pm curfew neither will town centres with everyone working from home again

I'm on furlough, I doubt my job will round for much longer

Our town centre is busier than last year and we are in local lockdown. More people are around and using the town rather than in offices.
Browneyesbigbum · 22/09/2020 13:31

I think it is good that pubs close earlier. The later people are out drinking and the more they drink the less likely to social distance.

A good balance since people want to eat and drink out but not all night long.

It's enough. Most people I know don't want any more than that. It needs to spread slowly through the population allowing the very clinically vulnerable to shield

Eckhart · 22/09/2020 13:31

I don't think it's a 'drip feed', and I do think there will be further changes to guidance and enforcement.

There seems to be this belief that 'they' somehow can see into the future and are hiding the truth from us. The fact is, we are living in a trial and error experiment. We know we can reduce cases drastically by implementing a lockdown, but to avoid going that far, we've got to find the boundaries. The lifting of lockdown to the extent we did it was too much lifting, so now we have to gradually tighten restrictions until it's enough.

Mooserp · 22/09/2020 13:33

Does indoor sports include gyms?

LondonJax · 22/09/2020 13:35

It's interesting that people seem to have missed the bit when Boris said the option is also on the table to draw on military support to help the police enforce the rules if need be.

Orangeblossom7777 · 22/09/2020 13:35

I don't think it will include gyms, contact sports maybe? I'm glad, it seems sensible and proportionate.

Rich managed to get the pubs kept open, apparently, they were going to close them. The time limit was the compromise.

Restaurants will find it difficult to have bookings any later than 8:30 , so probably halving their covers each night - so 50% drop on revenue when they are already struggling

It's a bit pointless going out for a few drinks if you have to go at 10, major loss in revenue again when they are already struggling

Theatres, who are also on their ass would struggle to meet this curfew as well

FatCatThinCat · 22/09/2020 13:38

Is it true that he's bringing in the military to support the police? If so that's really bloody scary.

Lemons1571 · 22/09/2020 13:39

I assume the 10pm pub curfew is primarily aimed at uni and freshers week

Completely agree. After watching Valance and Whitty yesterday they really seemed to be laying the foundations for a significant change to current measures. I find it hard to believe that after the level of concern they displayed yesterday, they've all been ensconced in crisis talks with Boris and the most decisive plan they could come up with was to tell people to work from home "if they can" and wear masks in taxi's.
