So pubs closing at 10 and no spectators at sports events. Seriously I stayed at home to watch that. I’m not saying I want more to be put in place and I’m under local restrictions in my area so can’t see friends and family, but the impression I got a the very least I was expecting BJ to say the rest of the country wouldn’t be allowed to meet with friends and family too. Like I said I don’t want that at all but I can’t believe all the hype of this speech just for that.

OP posts:

I fear that the 10pm curfew in bars will just encourage groups of drinkers to pile back into someone’s house to carry on. They’d have possibly been safer in the pub where they have to at least make a pretence of social distancing!

Dee1975 · 22/09/2020 13:41

I expected more too. Won’t really effect me. I’m not in a local lockdown. But I don’t go to sports or to the pub regularly. As a family we may go out for dinner, but would be home by 7!
I suspect multi house socials will be the next step. But they want to see if this has an impact first.
Regarding working from home. Confusing advice. I work in an office where productivity is better when people are in (call centre). So we don’t want people working from home. The office is Covid safe and everyone is 2 meters away from each other. This will just cause resentment from staff I think that we will make them still come in.

onedayinthefuture · 22/09/2020 13:42

Does it include children's indoor sports?

swabthenose · 22/09/2020 13:43

Work from home if you can makes a lot of sense. It's the way of the future anyway so no point trying to turn the tide at the expense of a crowded commute and office workers packed together when they don't need to be at all. I think I actually agree with these measures.

BUT. I don't think they'll work and there will have to be more, because schools are still open.

SorryImKnew · 22/09/2020 13:44

I'm happy. Those who are at risk, just shield as if under lockdown. Anyone capable of working/living, needs to get on with it and not be fearing imminent death on a permanent basis. There will be psychological repercussions long-term if this lockdown shit continues.

Polkadotties · 22/09/2020 13:45

If this new restrictions are just matching what has been happening in places like Leicester, where cases are still rising, does it just prove that the restrictions don’t work?

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 13:45

Won't make any difference to my life, and I rather like table service in pubs, long may it remain! Can't remember the last time I socialised with more than 6, Christmas work party I suppose. I thought they may have gone further

Sunshiney1981 · 22/09/2020 13:45

I agree with the poster who says this is political theatre.

So that they will be able to blame the public when things get worse over winter. This government don’t want any more negative publicity so they’re fielding it now.

They always say they make decisions ‘based on the science’ but that’s BS. They make decisions based on politics. Never forget how manipulative this bunch of clowns are. BJ, JRM and DC practically invented Brexit for personal gain.

It's really not confusing advice and appalling that you're actually planning to still make people come in to do a job that can be done from home. I hope you lose people to other employers if this is how you treat them. If they're underperforming then point that out and set targets. Don't drag everyone into an office during a pandemic as some kind of punishment FFS. Group situations will NEVER be as safe as people's own houses so the 2m blah blah doesn't actually matter. It's in the air. It's in the shared toilets. And it's on their commute to work.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/09/2020 13:46

I know mask wearing is not fun but it has seemed ridiculous to me that customers wear masks but the staff, who are potentially in daily contact with 100s of people, don't.

Customers in pubs and restaurants don't have to. Unless they're going to force people to pull the mask down for every mouthful.

With shops, I thought the idea was that a lot of people who aren't exempt still find masks uncomfortable, sweaty and restrictive, so they have to just put up with it for 20 minutes when dashing in a shop, whereas the staff have to be there - and working - for 8+ hours on the trot, every day. Also, aren't the huge perspex screens meant to act like a perma-mask? Will they just dump those now, if the staff have to wear masks anyway?

Racoonworld · 22/09/2020 13:46

@onedayinthefuture

Does it include children's indoor sports?
Yes all group indoor sports. Children are not exempt from any rules in England.
LondonJax · 22/09/2020 13:46

@FatCatThinCat - he said '“We will provide the police and local authorities with the extra funding they need, a greater police presence on our streets,” Mr Johnson said. “And the option to draw on military support where required to free up the police.”

And those who are at risk who currently work? Who's paying their bills? Or those at risk who are in school, who's Making sure they get an equal education to their peers?
GhostsInSnow · 22/09/2020 13:47

Cant see WFH being taken up by all companies. DH's office are back 2 days a week and he wondered if he'd now go back to home working, something thats been very successful in his firm to be fair.
He messaged me after the announcement to say he'd heard the directors chatting and saying 'it all hinges on the "should" and "where possible"'. Can see other companies taking the same stance.

swabthenose · 22/09/2020 13:47

Actually current advice is not to shield. And 30% of the population are 'at risk' because they are obese. Do you think that we can operate at 30% staff capacity in all businesses? How about schools?

AuntieMarys · 22/09/2020 13:47

We had plans to stay with friends in 2 weeks. 6 people all together.....but 2 different households. Not a bubble.
Is that not allowed?
( we haven't seen other households in houses at all)

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 13:48

@PumpkinsMum18

Outside of London most restaurants don't take books after 8.30 anyway, I ate at 8 last week and by the time we left circa 10pm we were one of the last.

Racoonworld · 22/09/2020 13:48

@Polkadotties

Leicester’s cases have fallen, so proves the opposite
swabthenose · 22/09/2020 13:49

Children are not exempt from any rules in England.

Except the one where it's fine for kids to gather in groups of several hundred as long as it's within school grounds!

Rae36 · 22/09/2020 13:50

I wondered if I had missed the main speech. All that build up for next to nothing.
I'm in Scotland so we've got another announcement coming in half an hour. Can hardly wait.

MarshaBradyo · 22/09/2020 13:51

Whole thing signalling change of direction mostly

So wfh if you can
Things becoming illegal is you do it
Fines

Change of mood bit economic reality means can’t do much

Not sure about family visiting limit, maybe down the line

IndiaMay · 22/09/2020 13:51

Weddings are back down to 15 which is a ball ache. They went from 5 people, to none allowed for 3 months, to 10 to 30 and now down to 15 again. Cant keep up

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 13:52

He mentioned team sports to those questioning kids dance etc - if you can distance and/or wear masks you are under different rules. Team sports can't distance.

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 13:54

@cannotchange

Around here pubs are pretty quiet by 10pm, some choose to close at 10.30 anyway (pre covid). Many restaurants shut around 10pm. It will affect big cities more, those of us in small towns tend to go out earlier it seems (I've lived in both)

onedayinthefuture · 22/09/2020 13:54

So kids can run around a soft play centre but can't play an indoor team sport?
