Is anyone actually still behind the Prime Minister?

I don't think he has handled the pandemic as well as he could tbh and i've noticed the tide turning on here recently very much against him. The right wing media are really getting restless with Boris as well and of course the left are sticking the knife in.

I think a lot of people cut him loads of slack because it was an unprecedented situation and then he got really ill himself (I don't think his 'shake hands with the virus' attitude was sensible either) which set the government back in their response. Then he was let down by his main advisor which has eroded confidence in his administration.

How can Boris get a hold of this and the government approach to Covid and get everyone back on side again? 9 months ago he won one of the biggest landslides ever, to huge fanfare. It's a bit of a downfall at the moment, he still has a chance to recover it.

Boris needs to unite the country again.

Nope

TSSDNCOP · 21/09/2020 18:48

I don't think any British Prime Minister has ever gone through such a difficult period to govern

Yeah, cos it was a total pisswalk for Churchill.

And for the poster saying the Tory's get bashed here; I am a Tory voter.

Woofbloodywoof · 21/09/2020 19:01

If we learn one thing from this, it might be a good yardstick with which to measure prospective PMs when we walk into the voting booth. Imagine a doomsday scenario - for what is Corona but our generation’s doomsday? - and vote according to who you think would best deal with it.
If you pop along to a booth in the future and find Little Lord Fauntleroy on the ballot once more AND you vote for him again, then I’m sorry but you’re just very very silly.

The80sweregreat · 21/09/2020 19:02

My dh feels a bit sorry for Boris. ( his always voted Tory ; I dont!)
His about the only one ive met recently. Most people are angry or think it's a conspiracy of some kind.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 21/09/2020 19:11

The interesting thing is how many of his own side are turning on him. Obviously at least a few dozen of his MPs wouldn't have been elected if not for the Boris factor, and they'll know that, but equally he really did stick the knife into a lot of senior Tories on the way up. There'll be scores to settle.

ParisianLady · 21/09/2020 19:14

I used to think they were doing ok in the circumstances

Now I think they're a bunch on inept, lying, self serving knobs. And as for Priti....

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 21/09/2020 19:17

Priti Patel is what happens when you prioritise ideology over competence.

glowworm93 · 21/09/2020 19:20

I didn't vote Tory but I didn't think this was a bad election outcome back in December 2019.

I've changed my mind now.

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/09/2020 19:22

Only a bozo like Johnson would think it was going to be anything other than a chance to stand next to Chamberlain in some fantasy football The Most Useless Prime Minister play-offs.

👏

I watched Parliament Live today and saw that weird performance by Christopher Robin Walker at the despatch box, and it was obvious that a lot of Tory MPs feel insulted and demeaned by their own government.

Theresa May remains fucking furious and I don't blame her. But she can take some comfort that she is not the worst PM in modern times, not by a long chalk.

Lonelycrab · 21/09/2020 19:26

There is no way now to handle this that won’t fuck off large swathes of the population

I think the amount of times this govt has messed things up has added to this. The list is huge now; sluggish reaction, ppe, exams fiasco, eye tests, u turns everywhere, mixed messages and now testing. Oh and Brexit fun and games looking bleak jazz hands emoji

I think there’s only so much people can take, but an awful lot is down to leadership.

MJMG2015 · 21/09/2020 19:27

Only if he's standing on the edge of a cliff...

The80sweregreat · 21/09/2020 19:30

Theresa May would have been mauled to pieces by the ERG and others if she had been in charge during this pandemic. I bet she's secretly pleased she hasn't got this one to deal with.
At least she could speak clearly and was organized .
It's landed on Boris and he can't hack any of it. It wasn't meant to be this way for him.
It's so grim.

PinkMacaron · 21/09/2020 19:32

Boris is dead man walking. He was once electoral gold dust (for some unknown reason), now he's a liability. The Conservatives know it, he knows it. I'd be amazed if he leads them into the next election.

jasjas1973 · 21/09/2020 19:34

I just think it is loose loose, there’s not even one solution more popular than others, everyone is fucked off with it in one way or another

He got to this stage gradually, bit by bit he has eroded public confidence in his Premiership.
Not least never apologising, always trying to shift the blame.

But perhaps the seminal moment was when he refused to sack Cummings plus all his ministers came out and backed Cummings too.
I think we all had a collective lightbulb moment and thought "One rule for us, another for them"

After that Bojo's fate was sealed.

godhelpusall · 21/09/2020 19:35

I haven't rtft but has anyone mentioned the obscene amount of corruption that is blatantly going on? Where billions of pounds of our money is being syphoned off and distributed amongst the cronies of Johnson Cummings et al? When you know that they have deliberately redirected money for PPE into the pockets of a very few friends how can you call them incompetent? It's corruption and we appear to be able to do nothing to stop this country becoming a fascist state that will be annihilated in January.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 21/09/2020 19:39

Fair point.

rebbonk · 21/09/2020 19:44

Boris is, and always has been, a self-centred ar$ehole.

His incompetence knows no bounds.

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/09/2020 19:47

But perhaps the seminal moment was when he refused to sack Cummings plus all his ministers came out and backed Cummings too

Yes, they looked weak. And now they look weak and treasonous.

Cummings in the Downing Street garden chairing his own press conference was a bewildering moment in British political history.

You can Tory stalwarts like Sir Edward Leigh and Sir Graham Brady backing away.

KaptainKaveman · 21/09/2020 19:53

What OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer said X 10000.

PicsInRed · 21/09/2020 19:55

But perhaps the seminal moment

There have been so many seminal moments.

Indeed, one too many, one might say. 🤔

jasjas1973 · 21/09/2020 19:58

@PicsInRed Yes very droll!

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 21/09/2020 20:11

Well that's me put off my evening brew and biccy.

tiredmedic · 21/09/2020 21:37

In answer to the question, do you mean " apart from Dominic Cummings, John Redwood and Jacob 'reet smug' "? Answer, well tbh, I would be a bit surprised if someone said "yes". Still, there are some strange people that walk among us these days......

MushMonster · 21/09/2020 21:46

I was going to say his Master, Dominic, but others beat me to it!
It feels chaotic, the rules differ from our neighboring countries, and then a few weeks later..... we take the same measures! I feel like we are always behind, so like we could have done better....
But I really think he does not care, in the meantime he keeps his place, and so Dominic is by his side, he is happy. I am 100% sure that they sit together to have tea every day and just laugh at us!

KaptainKaveman · 21/09/2020 22:01

Well far be it from me to revel in someone's downfall, but I will enjoy the public failure of this corrupt, hubristic serial liar. A lot.
