I'm pretty sure we're going to get told we can't see any other households for 2 weeks and a curfew on pubs.

Although a part of me thinks they'll just say no to seeing any other households and leave it at that with no limit. I'm hoping they'll keep the support bubbles though.

Well they could sort out Soho for starters - it's a fucking farce.

StCharlotte · 22/09/2020 08:59

@SleepingStandingUp

Is it a 5om announcement?
8pm.
The80sweregreat · 22/09/2020 08:59

Egg, Martial law! Sorry for the spelling mistake.
At least it's not that!

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2020 09:08

Thanks @StCharlotte clearly HE doesn't have kids to put to bed!

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 22/09/2020 09:11

What's the point of predicting guessing what will happen? Does the poster who guesses the closest get some sort of prize?

MintyMabel · 22/09/2020 09:11

Well, they'd bloody well better not close the hospitality industry again. There is only so much unemployment anyone can reasonably deal with

So, how many deaths is that worth to you?

Areyousureted · 22/09/2020 09:23

Closing hospitality and not allowing going in to each other’s houses did work in Aberdeen. It reversed the cluster and sent cases almost to zero, even with schools opening. So maybe that would work ?

Pink98 · 22/09/2020 09:27

The deaths are desperately sad but it’s a question of ruining the economy and the futures of our young people to prolong the lives of those who are near end of life anyway. Not to mention the 60k estimated deaths from cancer alone next year due to being unable to access necessary treatment / diagnosis.

It’s terrible that this choice and balancing act has to be made but it does. I may be a bit desensitised to it as a actually did my dissertation at university on a very similar moral issue

Areyousureted · 22/09/2020 09:34

But Pink, if we don’t do something and coronavirus is allowed to spread then those treatments for other conditions will be even less available as the hospitals will be so busy with urgent Covid patients. Keeping hospitality open doesn’t just magically make coronavirus go away, it’s still there and in fact more so

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2020 09:35

Reading the Daily Mail you would think he will announce Marshall law today! Dear Lord do not put the frigging Paw Patrol in charge

Paw patrol would do a better job. My faith in them is higher...

Couldn’t be any worse surely

Areyousureted · 22/09/2020 09:41

There is so much deniers around. The government need to do a huge campaign to explain to people how many people could end up sick with long term health problems if it is allowed to spread and how this would in fact have terrible lasting effect on the economy in itself. So many people don’t seem to understand this

Artesia · 22/09/2020 09:41
  • All those lies they were telling us about “the evidence is it doesn’t spread in the workplace”...

Indeed. Lie, lie, lie*

But it’s not necessarily just the work place is it? People have to get there and back which, for many of us, means public transport. I feel totally secure in my office with all the measures taken. Much less so on a packed commuter train and then the tube.

roguecat · 22/09/2020 09:42

so, they are just going to shut pubs at 10 instead of 11, wow. That will really stop the virus in its tracks, won't it🙄😬

IrmaFayLear · 22/09/2020 09:45

When I see posters like MintyMabel I really despair.

Someone on another thread came up with the classic that old people were a priority “because they fought a war”. How old does someone have to be to have served in WW2 ? Very, very old.

Another bellowed that it was more important for their frail 85-year-old aunt to live than for a 35-year-old to go out. Someone quickly pointed out that that 35-year-old may be lonely, looking for a partner, or just trying to earn a living in the (much hated by some on MN) hospitality industry.

As Pink98 observes, there needs to be a balance. Protect the elderly, but don’t make it all about them.

gildalilly · 22/09/2020 09:49

I think making masks in schools the rule all the time might help. Easy to police and if you looked at the stats they started to soar when schools went back. Surely it will help a tiny bit in teachers feeling a bit safer too.

Beebeeboo2 · 22/09/2020 09:56

For anyone who thinks "lockdown didn't work the last time"...

maybe we shouldn't make it all about Covid? keep cancer investigations and treatments available etc. if a doctor can see 10 people in then it should be 10, it doesn't matter if their problem is covid , cancer or MH. if we make it all about covid we'll save 9 people about covid but lose those with other illnesses.

people working in hospitality need some money as well to be able to eat and pay their bills and their education, and lets be honest furlough can't last forever

my sister is a teacher in a country where masks are compulsory since the kids are 6yo, trust me when I say it's not that easy to police, she spends part of her class that should be for education telling them off
meeeeeeeeeeee · 22/09/2020 10:05

if that is all they are doing, after yesterday's dire warnings, we are all fucked😳

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/09/2020 10:06

Masks are allowed if they want but they appear everywhere - they make
Great catapults, head coverings and ping really well. My favourite is the obsession with chewing wipes and squirting hand sanitiser.

MarshaBradyo · 22/09/2020 10:08

Yes there needs to be balance. Angela Raynor was talking about only concentrating on having zero Covid deaths on R4 the other day.

It’s not possible. All elements need to be weighed up - economy, education all big factors as is overall availability of health care

Belladonna12 · 22/09/2020 10:11

Perhaps it should not matter what the condition it is but the urgency of treatment will always make a difference. People in ITU who are hours away from death without treatment are always going to be prioritised over nonurgent treatment. If the hospitals are filled with people who will die within days without treatment they're not going to be performing elective surgery.

A lot of MN seem unaware a large section of the population cant simply wfh (or think that "just closing pubs/restaurants and gyms" will solve it)
