Chris Whitty to hold briefing tomorrow

386 replies

molifly14 · 20/09/2020 22:09

According to sky news, Chris Witty is to hold a briefing tomorrow and will not be joined by any members of the cabinet or Boris Johnson and won't take questions. He will apparently discuss different scenarios.

Does that sound odd to anyone else and does this maybe mean no further restrictions this week, let's just try and scare us all into being good instead?

Don’t be ridiculous.
If you have surgery with covid your chances of dying are much higher. Services weren’t stopped on a whim 🙄 there’s lots of research available to read. Peer reviewed research rather than the opinion of a poster on MN.

They’ll be telling everyone why households can’t mix and how we need to give things up if we want the economy to continue running and schools to stay open. Then lots of graphs and science talk about the balancing act.
Then BJ will come on the next day and tell people they must not socialise with any other household etc etc.

@TheMurk
Of course it's quantifiable if they are using test and trace data even slightly effectively. If they can see that a much greater percentage of contacts that were in households go on to develop the virus than those contacts in other situations it becomes clear that households is where the virus is spreading the most.

@CrocodilesCry a lot of people can't watch it though!
I'll be taking phone calls and can't use the internet while taking a call as our screens are recorded and I can't listen to something while on the phone anyway.
999 dispatchers, police, nurses, paramedics, carers, teachers, supermarket workers.... thousands of people won't be able to

@TheMurk

Sorry, who says it’s being spread in households? The Daily Mail?

This is something that simply isn’t quantifiable.

Try the BMJ. And Directors of Public Health across the country.

Wolverhampton is going into local restrictions and *90%* of their infections are being transmitted within households.

"Contact within households is thought to be responsible for roughly 70% of SARS-CoV-2 transmission when widespread community control measures are in place"

I'm assuming if people are being honest with test and trace then you can see where mixing households is causing a rise as the people in the households will be contacts and if they then get a positive test, they will have a link.

@StatisticalSense people are taking names and numbers of the people visiting their house? Are they?

Is this information being recorded somewhere centrally?

News to me.

Absolutely laughable if you think Big Tam from the Renton is keeping a record of the numerous visitors to his house on a daily basis.

But carry on in your middle class bubbles.

@Dustballs

I actually feel really angry too and am surprised I feel that way. But i do.

I get the dangers of Covid. I get that the NHS may soon to be overwhelmed.

I'm not into conspiracy and am sure our government is simply incompetent. Of course this is totally new. No country knows what the hell they're doing. But our government is just the worst of the worst.

I know all of this.

But something doesn't add up here. It just doesn't.

I agree. Cases have been going up in Scotland for ages. More than the 2 -3 weeks before deaths apparently happen.

I’m not sure anything sinister is going on more that even the scientists don’t really have a clue and can’t agree what will happen.

As I said, some can't. But many can and to say they can't isn't true.

To be fair, big Tam might well have that info. But in the form of a tick list rather than for track and test

The scientists should issue a bollocking tomorrow. Some people - the Cabinet, parts of the press, other politicians, members of the public and the bone idle fools spreading shit ideas on Facebook - need a bollocking. The fact that this has turned into part of the culture war really is a disgrace.

If this had been done properly, the virus would be something that could be suppressed via a decent Track and Trace system, allowing other medical conditions to be treated, with furlough extended, financial support for people to isolate. People let it get out of hand again, just at the moment we turn into the autumn and winter.

@CrocodilesCry so the key words in that quote there would be “thought to be”...

They don’t fucking know.

How are people swallowing all this BS?

Please don't be obtuse. If you tested positive, you would be asked who you had been in close contact with including people who have been inside your home or garden.
Hopefully you'd have the decency to pass on their contact details - especially those of friends and loved ones.

StealthPolarBear - I don't suspect anything ... I don't think. It just all seems very odd. Too odd.

I've actually been very scared of the virus and critical of the government opening up too much too soon. I thought schools going back was ridiculous. I could see this coming.

That's really what I mean. How did our government (with all their advisers etc) not see this coming? Why are they once again behind the curve, on the back foot, and reacting in a panic and rush?

I don't believe it can just be incompetence. I don't know what else it could be. I'm not into conspiracy - but also have lost all faith and trust in our government now and am pretty sure something dodgy is going on.

@CrocodilesCry you’re again relying on that terribly middle class concept of “decency” which I hate to tell you is rather overshadowed by a vast number who do not give a fuck (or can’t remember) who has been in their house, or whose house they have been in.

I don't really care what your point is. You clearly want to try to contradict all of the evidence that infections and deaths are going up and I believe the science. Call me a sheeple 🤷‍♀️

Just let it run! It’s the one thing they haven’t tried and yet it’ll be the thing that would work, isolate those who need isolating for their protection and then let the rest of us take the hit.

You have to appreciate just how venal and talentless Boris Johnson and his Government are. The people in his circle are there because they are loyal to him, not because they are any good.

Deaths aren’t going up. The “curve” in that respect is flat. Quite simple to find this information. It’s not “science” either.
