Chris Whitty to hold briefing tomorrow

According to sky news, Chris Witty is to hold a briefing tomorrow and will not be joined by any members of the cabinet or Boris Johnson and won't take questions. He will apparently discuss different scenarios.

Does that sound odd to anyone else and does this maybe mean no further restrictions this week, let's just try and scare us all into being good instead?

@Namechange313

Why the need for a second lockdown anyway? Yes infection rates are higher in recent weeks, but surely this was to be expected with the schools going back. The only thing that should matter is the amount of deaths and hospitalisations.
21 deaths today, sad of course for the individual families. But do 21 deaths warrant another complete lockdown?

The answer is yes. If the death rate is going up so is the infection rate. Have a bit of respect for those 21 families as well.

I’m not sure I can handle all this again. I like Whitty though

@SpecialWGM what about the 1800 or so families whose loved ones didn’t die of COvid (with covid) yesterday?

@CrocodilesCry overwhelmingly it’s spreading in care settings and hospitals.

I wonder if more people will give a fuck if they say schools might close, or maybe more people will give a fuck if they close the pubs.

No pint in Whitty answering questions, Boris Mumbles something totally different 24hrs later. But hoping in vain BJ and friends are listening to the science and putting that into their plans.

👍

Sadly that's not only 'not wise' but completely idiotic.. have a little read of the NHS thread today .. and try and learn to care that this isn't just about you.

Yes I'm guessing this will be them trying to explain the thinking behind Eg the rule of six.
But they're overlooking the behvioural science. At the beginning of this they had the trust and backing of most of the population. Now it's very different and people will not comply.

Him and Johnson have probably had a monumental argument.
I expect Whitty needs to lay the law down but Johnson is dithering about it. Hence he's letting Whitty do a press conference but not take questions.

So if the spread isn’t slowing what’s the point of masks? Can anyone explain? And an answer better than “because no one is wearing them”, because having been in various areas across the U.K. in the last few weeks, the vast vast majority of people most certainly are.

I would be interested if they could say what exactly their strategy is. There is no vaccine, and it is likely to be at least a year before there is one that is both safe and effective. And possibly several years until that happens.

The virus is totally endemic and although lockdown suppresses it for a while, when people go back to work and children go to school it will spread again.

Are they really expecting us to live like this for years?

Why is London going into tougher restrictions?

I thought London was one of the least infected areas at the moment.

What is going on???

Report
ineedaholidaynow · 20/09/2020 23:03

A lot of the spread is happening in mixing households where people don't wear masks

oxydrive73 · 20/09/2020 23:03

It won't be lockdown yet, I would hazard a guess it will be no going into each others houses, possible takeaway only from restaurants. I just hope they keep the schools open. Poor kids only just got settled back in.

Not really sure what your point is? We are talking about covid. You siting the number of non covid deaths doesn't strengthen your argument.

Because - arguably - even somewhere that you are wearing a mask - eg a shop - you shouldn’t be in close contact with someone for long enough to be infected.

In the community it’s being spread in households. And in care homes and hospitals as a PP said.

But the biggest problem that something can be done about is transmission in and between households and that’s why there will be another lockdown with no households mixing, probably by next weekend.

I actually feel really angry too and am surprised I feel that way. But i do.

I get the dangers of Covid. I get that the NHS may soon to be overwhelmed.

I'm not into conspiracy and am sure our government is simply incompetent. Of course this is totally new. No country knows what the hell they're doing. But our government is just the worst of the worst.

I know all of this.

But something doesn't add up here. It just doesn't.

Sorry, who says it’s being spread in households? The Daily Mail?

This is something that simply isn’t quantifiable.

Where? Not in restaurants and pubs, which we were all encouraged to gk to in August. Not in schools either.

That said, masks are supposedly slowing the spread compared to what would be happening in a parallel universe where we all act exactly the same but aren't wearing masks. That's what "slowing the spread" would mean in this context. It doesn't mean an R rate below 1.

Problem is, we haven't got a parralel universe to test on (would be called the control group), which us why its hard tk say with certainly whether maska are having the effect if reducing spread at all.
