Chris Whitty to hold briefing tomorrow

molifly14 · 20/09/2020 22:09

According to sky news, Chris Witty is to hold a briefing tomorrow and will not be joined by any members of the cabinet or Boris Johnson and won't take questions. He will apparently discuss different scenarios.

Does that sound odd to anyone else and does this maybe mean no further restrictions this week, let's just try and scare us all into being good instead?

Who gives a fuck?

1happyhippie · 20/09/2020 22:26

Maybe they are sending him out first to explain stuff to us.
Like, if we do this now we can prevent another full lockdown?
I do think people tend to listen to what the medical/scientific officers say more than boris.
Boris is shite at explaining things and getting his point across.
Most the time he leaves me more confused than anything!
Can’t see a big announcement being made without the pm though

Helenj1977 · 20/09/2020 22:26

I think people trust Chris Whitty and Patrick Valance. They'll be warning us tomorrow. 'If we don't follow the rules, this will happen'.

Interesting way of doing things. Boris will be quiet until something needs to change.

Piggypower · 20/09/2020 22:28

But the people who are breaking the rules won’t watch or listen to Whitty 🤷🏼‍♀️

Namechange313 · 20/09/2020 22:28

Why the need for a second lockdown anyway? Yes infection rates are higher in recent weeks, but surely this was to be expected with the schools going back. The only thing that should matter is the amount of deaths and hospitalisations.
21 deaths today, sad of course for the individual families. But do 21 deaths warrant another complete lockdown?

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 20/09/2020 22:29

They should said on the news the scientists will hold a briefing at 11am tomorrow (while we’re all at work) and expect to see Boris at some point bin the week?

Oh my, sorry about my typos!

According to Downing Street, they will explain how the coronavirus is currently spreading and set out "potential scenarios" for the months ahead.

"If you follow the rules, butterflies and sunbeams abound... if you don't follow the rules, doom awaits us all."

ThatDamnScientist · 20/09/2020 22:31

I suspect it is just going to be a reminder, that cases are rising and we must follow the rules, also not to waste tests etc. and Whitty and Valance are there to remind people what to get a test for/not get a test for. Although schools had been told have things in place by the end of September for blended and distance learning/homeschooling, maybe they will announce blended learning across the country, this government are so chaotic it could be anything!

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 22:32

Disgraceful that Boris is still hiding his ineffectual arse behind the proper adults.

TheMurk · 20/09/2020 22:33

The numbers of people in hospital in Scotland were significantly revised down (by 82%) last week and not a peep of it on the news. There are about 45 people in hospital across the 279 hospitals in Scotland.

A second lockdown because why, exactly?

Absolute lunacy.

I hope people start pushing back soon.

MadameBlobby · 20/09/2020 22:33

@Piggypower

Or they’ll be at work.

It’s ridiculous. Whitty and Valance are just medical and scientific advisors to the government. They aren’t elected representatives. Other considerations than scientific ones have to be taken into account in implementing measures

TheMurk · 20/09/2020 22:33

To add, these 45 people are not in ITU.

Putmynewshoeson · 20/09/2020 22:34

I'm feeling really uneasy at the moment. I feel like there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than we realise.
We can't afford a second lockdown, we couldn't afford the first, so if we go into a second lockdown I feel like things are actually a lot worse than we are being told

Is anyone going to listen to Whitty really? Seems like the public have really turned on the scientists.

Oaktree55 · 20/09/2020 22:34

It’s 11am. I’m guessing it’s a hand holding/communication-science/maths lesson as they realise a lot of people still don’t understand why Covid is still an issue as hospitals aren’t full 🤦🏽‍♀️

Piggypower · 20/09/2020 22:34

@Namechange313 21 people died of Covid on 14th March. A week later it was in the hundreds.
I don’t think it will escalate so quickly again but even so.
I’m not a doom monger. I was really hopeful and thought it was fading away in July and august. Now I feel a bit stupid tbh

A lot worse how though? We are given figures every day.
Hugepeppapigfan · 20/09/2020 22:35

I live in a local lockdown area. Nothing has changed here. Pubs closing earlier and people being told not to socialise hasn’t changed anything for so many people who are carrying on with their lives as normal. Pubs, restaurants, soft play and everything else remaining open isn’t a lockdown! There’s zero point.

TheMurk · 20/09/2020 22:36

@Piggypower the number of 21 reported today includes deaths dating back to April. Your point is moot.

Bluelinings · 20/09/2020 22:36

Hospitalisations have been climbing for over a week. Deaths have ticked up a little but we wouldn’t see an effect of the current case rise on deaths for 2-3 weeks. Hopefully they’ll stay low and you’re right hit just explaining how the data works.
molifly14 · 20/09/2020 22:36

11am seems such a daft time when most people are back at work, like the government told us to do. Consider this our pre naughty step warning.

Praying they announce a little more flexibility wrt schools. I can't cope with this anxiety anymore.

MadameBlobby · 20/09/2020 22:36

They’ll need to try and scare people into giving a fuck. Good luck with that.

Hospitals are seeing admissions climb, deaths usually occur with a 4 week lag. So waiting until the deaths are high is too late (every death is one too late), at that point we have lost control again, cases are currently doubling every 7 days (it was 3 at peak), we dont want to be there again. Stronger measures now will prevent a further harsh lockdown.
