Yay.

Second wave coming
OP posts:
neveradullmoment99 · 18/09/2020 20:16

It will take a teacher or a child to die and that will be school closures.
So awful.

BunsyGirl · 18/09/2020 20:17

8 cases in the past week in my area. In the nearest city where I work and my children go to school, 7 cases per 100,000. We don’t need a lockdown.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/09/2020 20:17

@Branches1 Children are resilient and the younger ones won't miss what they've never had. Just think about teens reactions when we get nostalgic about our own youth - they look at you like you're an alien. I remember my auntie going on about going to "dances" in the 50s like they were the only way to have a good time in your 20s. At the time she was telling me it was the height of grunge and I was having MY good time going to rock & indie clubs that she would have been terrified of!

My point is that children make the best of what they have, naturally. As adults we need to not keep carping on about how unfair on them it is, what they're missing out on etc, and just keep on keeping on!

Staffy1 · 18/09/2020 20:17

@Branches1, I'm hoping an effective treatment is found as well as a vaccine. Treatment might be a better option if the vaccines don't give at least a year's protection. I read yesterday that an iodine nasal wash killed the virus 100%. Things like this give us some hope that they will find ways to deal with it.

katy1213 · 18/09/2020 20:19

Thanks for the warning. I'd started on the last mega-pack of toilet rolls, but will I need bread flour? (Paracetemol - untouched; cans of tomatoes - untouched; rice - untouched; corned beef - unfortunately developed quite a passion for hash!)

Angrymum22 · 18/09/2020 20:20

The point of lockdown was to flatten the curve. It was never meant to prevent a second wave or eliminate the virus. It was to allow the country to plan and deal with a viral pandemic that absolutely no one was able to predict or solve.
All the strategies were to relieve the stress on the health services because globally some of the best health services in the world were in pandemonium. The death total in this country does not reflect the date we lockdown or the NHSs management of the virus. It reflects the health and management of our elderly an£ vulnerable over the last 30yrs. The NHS is particularly efficient at keeping chronically and terminally ill people alive. We probably have a much higher number of vulnerable people in the uk because our health service is free at point of access.
We, as a society, were asked to protect the vulnerable, please remember this when berating the NHS, Care services and government. We were asked to protect them, shield them and follow simple measures to slow/stop community spread. We have all failed and must take some of the responsibility.

HeIenaDove · 18/09/2020 20:20

Why on earth have hairdressers got to close? I went to my hairdresser yesterday and they are strictly adhering to all the precautions and then some.

Putting them in the same category as pubs is grossly unfair.

ChasingRainbows19 · 18/09/2020 20:20

@Angrymum22 you are very wrong about the NHS. They kicked out people to make up the beds. ( wrong) Cancelled a lot of normal procedures. We can’t do that again as they’ll actually probably be full of sick people. It’s winter season

Have you ever seen the news reports of ambulances queuing and no beds? That is a fact every single year in most trusts before covid. Lots of trusts haven’t enough space to have lots of covid wards and icus isolated to normal illness.

The staff that have done this before are suffering from the effects mentally and physically. They are not ready at all. If we get on with it and staff get ill? Who will look after the raft of patients? The nightingales will struggle to open due to lack of staff, not enough in normal hospitals.

So I’m really hoping this is a smaller wave and that less people are hit hard with it all and don’t need hospitalising.

Pixxie7 · 18/09/2020 20:22

Let’s hope there isn’t a third.

isthereanameforme · 18/09/2020 20:22

Speaking in Oxfordshire, Mr Johnson continued: "As we look at this particular curve and what is happening now, clearly we are going to keep everything under review. I don't want to get into a second national lockdown at all, it is the last thing anybody wants.
"I don't want to go into bigger lockdown measures at all, we want to keep schools open and it is fantastic the schools have gone back in the way they have. We want to keep the economy open as far as we possibly can, we want to keep businesses going.
"The only way we can do that is, obviously, if people follow the guidance."

Keeping it under review? At what point does he realise that we are getting more cases and needs to act quickly
Tighten restrictions on the worst affected areas and let everyone else carry on as they are.
There wont be anything left if he keeps closing businesses like this and we will be in a much worse state than ever

gje943 · 18/09/2020 20:23

No steep rise in cases for Sweden.

It's official: locking down does not work. All we've managed to do is "kick the can down the road"...this virus is not going anywhere - doesn't matter if we lock down 50 times.

AdelaidePlace · 18/09/2020 20:25

theemoji and even that website isn't accurate. This shows, I think, where there is more than one identified positive.

I know of schools not shown with one positive COVID case in each.

MadamHoooch · 18/09/2020 20:25

I really do think this is the end of society and of civilization. I am not exaggerating. It is the apocalypse

Gwynfluff · 18/09/2020 20:27

The death total in this country does not reflect the date we lockdown

We locked down a week too late. It’s pretty well established now. German health system is excellent and they keep people alive. Their death rate in comparison was unbelievable.

Also whose not being careful? It spread among younger people first who’d gone back to work in factories and processing businesses.

Pheobeasy · 18/09/2020 20:28

Why on earth have hairdressers got to close? I went to my hairdresser yesterday and they are strictly adhering to all the precautions and then some.

I agree with this, but hairdressers and beauty salons are largely owned or staffed by women, so they'll be closed first because no one really gives a fuck about women.

Ellsbells12 · 18/09/2020 20:28

@Ravenesque

The good news is that the Oxford team are really close to finishing the tests on their vaccine - gone back to work on it again after having to halt when a volunteer became ill after being given the vaccine.

We are getting close to that. I listened to The Life Scientific on Radio 4 where Jim Al-Khalili was interviewing Sarah Gilbert who is heading up the vaccine and the testing. She's a bit brilliant.

What did she say? I need hope Grin
AdelaidePlace · 18/09/2020 20:28

Think everyone is quite rightly ignoring you madam

Teateaandmoretea · 18/09/2020 20:29

The Sweden argument is okay but it does ‘assume all else is equal’ ditto Japan/ South Korea/ Germany.

We need to find our own way out as the U.K.. Immunity and therefore spread is fairly likely to be dependent on previous viral patterns in countries. The first step would be deciding what it is we are actually trying to do - eradicate, minimise or flatten the curve.

sickohsickofthisshit · 18/09/2020 20:29

Hored the toilet rolls now ....

My hairdresser ( who is also a good friend) works in a salon with 4 other people on a self employed basis. No masks, only two others wear visors. I was there for 15 minutes and refused to let her blow dry my hair. She was offended when I asked her to wash her hands before she cut mine-I arrived as she was finishing her previous client so know she didn’t wash her hands.
Teateaandmoretea · 18/09/2020 20:30

I really do think this is the end of society and of civilization. I am not exaggerating. It is the apocalypse

I think you need to call your crisis team

She is. If she saves the day it’s another woman to show how good they are in this pandemic. Merkel etc

I really do think this is the end of society and of civilization. I am not exaggerating. It is the apocalypse
Humanity has faced, and will face worse than this. This is a blip in our story really. Think of the black death, think of Spanish Flu and Polio. We managed to outlast them. It could have been much worse and I thank whatever deity there may or may not be every day that this virus isn't more dangerous to children. Things are scary and horrible and everything feels much more precarious with shit leadership but this isn't the end of days, not yet anyway!
The80sweregreat · 18/09/2020 20:32

A woman finding the key to this vaccine would be awesome!
Fingers crossed to all of them.
