Should we have a full lockdown briefly now to slow down rises

Just musing really. Would it be better to have a few weeks of full lockdown now while furlough is still ongoing rather than needing to do one in a month or so as an emergency when 1000 people are dying every day, having to extend furlough etc.

If it’s planned then people can prep for it. Make it a really strict one. Have minimum shops open for emergencies with strict distancing. School well prepared to teach online for 2 weeks.

Might this give us the time to sort the testing backlog and increase them as promised? Give everyone the short sharp shock they need to take distancing/masks seriously again then reopen with clearer rules

It’s definitely worth a consideration. But once we do it there will be multiple excuses to stay in it.
I think maybe during October half term would be a good idea.

Rosehip10 · 14/09/2020 15:34

No

lughnasadh · 14/09/2020 15:35

Don't be ridiculous.

People are not dying on that kind of scale, and are unlikely to ever again.

The measures in place are working. It's as good as it's going to get. You will never stop people dying of things caused by viruses, bacteria, poisoning etc.

There is an 'acceptable' death rate.

Most people dying of/with covid have underlying conditions, nothing will ever make it entirely safe for them, and if it wasn't covid it might be flu the succumbed to - vaccines or not. There is no chance of 100% erradication.

kittensarecute · 14/09/2020 15:37

No. No no no.

IcedPurple · 14/09/2020 15:37

No. Stupid idea.

viccat · 14/09/2020 15:37

No. We'd just be back where we are afterwards.
The virus is not going to go anywhere anytime soon. Rates of infections have only been lower because of all the lockdown and social distancing measures in place. As soon as you lift those measures, infections will go up.
Death rates may never go up as much now that there are better treatments though, so that's a big positive.

RedRiverShore · 14/09/2020 15:38

So people crowding into minimal shops and I guess you would still expect essential services to work, shop workers in these minimal shops and delivery drivers, not everyone has the space or money to get several weeks supply of food

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/09/2020 15:38

No. What is the point? Cases will just rise again once it's over.

Othering · 14/09/2020 15:39

What rises? 1 person died today. ONE. Jesus.

PicsInRed · 14/09/2020 15:40

Nope, not doing it again, no way. No.

starfish4 · 14/09/2020 15:41

I don't think many will cope with another lockdown, although, that could be the way it's going if certain people don't start following the guidelines. I'd be up for tighter restrictions now if it meant avoiding high numbers again, ie being able to go to work/shopping (perhaps going back to limiting customers) and not mixing with others socially (other than if you're in a bubble).

wasthataburp · 14/09/2020 15:41

No and there wasn't even enough risk to justify the full lock down the first time so absolutely would not support another

Frankthefrenchie · 14/09/2020 15:44

Nope, ridiculous idea Confused

Jpowe · 14/09/2020 15:44

No we have to live with it till they get a vaccine

SillyUnMurphy · 14/09/2020 15:44

No. We locked down in the first place to protect the NHS and flatten the curve. We did both. Now it’s time to carry on with life.

ClarencesMum · 14/09/2020 15:45

Nope

IrishMamaMia · 14/09/2020 15:47

Castiel07 · 14/09/2020 15:48

I don't think we will have a another lock down like March, but I do think we will be more restricted with socialising.
Probably banning seeing anyone other then your own household.

RedRiverShore · 14/09/2020 15:48

Mumsnet is full of these people sitting comfy at home musing about locking everyone down, probably wfh or not working themselves.

AmelieTaylor · 14/09/2020 15:52

I'd support it. Yes cases will rise again when we open again, but if we can knock the case rate down now, it would help. The lower the case & R rate, the safer things are.

Yes people have underlying conditions - does that make it OK for them to die? Are this disposable?

I have diabetes & hypertension. My diabetes is well controlled (through diet & exercise). Without Covid I'm not expected to die anytime soon. On the Alama Scale I'm highly likely to die of Covid if I get Covid & whilst I'm not in the first flush of youth, I am only 51 & I'd appreciate a few more years on the clock if that's ok with you!

sashagabadon · 14/09/2020 15:52

No definately absolutely not. We should never have full lockdown again. Local is the way to go

sashagabadon · 14/09/2020 15:54

Exactly , no thought given to the poor buggers like me and my daughter that allow others to enjoy their wfh
ParadiseLaundry · 14/09/2020 15:57

First they said it was to slow the cases to give them time to set up Nightingale Hospitals, protect the NHS. They achieved that in a few weeks.

Then they said they needed to flatten the curve. That happened.

Then they said we need the death count to reduce. That happened.

Then they needed the R rate to be below one.

Then they started counting the amount of infections instead of death rate because the numbers sound scarier.

Enough of all of this already.

Obviously if you're at high risk you can and should take extra precautions.

But millions of other people need to feed their families if that's OK with you. Another lockdown will do little to stop the spread but will further devastate lives and livliehoods up and down the country.
