How can you do this to your children (and yourselves)?

It has been six months and it's now very clear that covid won't be doing away in our lifetimes. A vaccine won't eradicate it (just as a vaccine didn't eradicate flu).

Most of you seem to be willing to accept social distancing and masks for the foreseeable. And I don't get it. We are a tribal species. We literally die without contact and get sick without communication. Kids are learning arrange, stilted ways of being that will just worsen their digital reliance. OCD is being normalised. Dating will be neurotic and masked. Freshers won't make new loves or lifelong friends like we did. As for their working lives...

I wouldn't mind catching covid (indeed I'm sure we all will sooner or later) so can someone explain to me what on earth is happening in their heads to tip the balance? If it only affected us, I could understand (well, I couldn't but this feels like child abuse on a giant scale).

Lockdown suited my kids very well and now they are back at school it just feels like life as normal except for masks, which are weird but not a biggie.

I have enjoyed social distancing from my horrible Mother, set up a new business, seen my son who has suffered serious MH issues relax and enjoy lockdown and go back to school more cheerful and confident. We have adapted as a family to letting go of 'normal life' and since we have experienced years of hardship, we found ourselves to be flexible and resilient.

I'm sure those who were children during the two world wars were deeply affected by their childhood experiences but they went on to have careers, families and pretty bog-standard lives, just like today's kids will.

What's

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2020 18:54

Another vote for the OP. Bravo for questioning and thinking.

Hmm a lot of very half baked "truths"

Torvean32 · 13/09/2020 18:55

OP no one life is more valuable than another.
These are short term measures til a vaccine can be rolled out. Its likely that will start in December.
Masks and social distancing foor 1/2 terms is not going to stop uni students from making friends.

I dont know why the elderly and vulnerable are seen as disposable by some.

Eng123 · 13/09/2020 18:56

Op you are making a fuss about some minimal impositions. It always about "my rights" try to think "my responsibilities" for once.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/09/2020 18:56

The Oxford vaccine won't stop you catching or spreading it, it just lightens symptoms

It doesn't work well on the over 55s (who are the ones with the dangerous symptoms)

You have no evidence to back this up OP. What motivates you to spread disinformation?

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 18:58

Agree with you OP. people need to look after themselves. If they’re following the guidelines then they’re safe and about butt out of everyone else’s life. If someone chooses not to wear a mask (which is their own prerogative) then if other people are wearing their magical mask they’re protected aren’t they so what’s the big deal. Yes it affects people and yes people die. Many diseases and viruses do that. It’s life.

BabyLlamaZen · 13/09/2020 19:00

You wouldn't mind catching covid. 👍

You don't understand it and it seems you never will.

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2020 19:00

omg you couldn't make it up. you still don't understand masks.

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:01

My life is going on. People in masks terrify my baby and to be honest I can’t breathe well in them so I’m not wearing one so I’m just not going to shops.

Dowser · 13/09/2020 19:01

@Mollyboom
Good for you .

‘where Are the others’
Well I’m here having a lovely drink in a york city centre pub. Lovely atmosphere on the streets and in the pubs. Pretty much no masks anywhere.
All feels decidedly normal.

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2020 19:02

Do you have disposable people at home?

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:02

No no if masks stop the spread if you wear one and I don’t you’re safe aren’t you. I’m not even getting into the fact that shop workers don’t have to wear them. Corona virus not partial to affect them?

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:03

Of course I have people at home. We’re not at risk of anything we don’t have family days out shopping. We order online if we have to but have lots of perishables at home. It’s not hard. If

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:04

Our days out are to the country we order food in if we’re having a treat we’re not throwing parties. We’re fine. I’m not gonna terrify the kids about it.

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2020 19:04

@Dowser fab👍🏻

The masks mainly protect other people, not the ones wearing them. So people wearing a mask are protecting you.

The shop where I work we do all have to wear them. It's company policy. Shame so many customers aren't wearing them, particularly as my Dr has told me this week that I shouldn't be working in such an environment. Nothing I can do about it though.

Parker231 · 13/09/2020 19:06

And you wonder why the scientists are talking about another lockdown! It’s not difficult to wear a mask, socially distance and limit your group to six. Much better than the alternative.

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:06

That’s fine but if the kids don’t have to wear one then how can that be justified. Coronavirus has been known to affect kids too.

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2020 19:06

No no if masks stop the spread if you wear one and I don’t you’re safe aren’t you.

Nope. my mask protects you. It doesn't stop me breathing in your air borne droplets if you are not wearing one.

Dowser · 13/09/2020 19:08

@sunglassesonthetable
Thanks for the good wishes.
Yes, it is fab.
We won’t have too many gorgeous evenings like this at this time of year so certainly will be making the most of them 😁

Fosler · 13/09/2020 19:09

For those of you who approve of mask wearing please watch this. This man is a retired doctor. Skip the first ten minutes if you wish but all of his YT videos are very informative, listen to the end and you will set he doesn't make a penny, he does this because he cares.

ktp100 · 13/09/2020 19:10

Yet more 'me-centric' thinking.

When there's a chance millions of people might die due to a global bloody pandemic, education/dating/communication etc JUST DON'T MATTER AS MUCH!

Whatever anyone's feelings are about how human beings function best DON'T MATTER at the moment, just as they wouldn't matter if we were at war. Do you think parents moaned like this in the Blitz?!

See the bigger picture, FFS.

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:11

Yeah they’re not enforcing masks in high schools. Primary schools. You don’t see everyone wearing one and the kids. Shop workers. Are they immune?

CursesAndMagic · 13/09/2020 19:13

And everyone’s waiting for a vaccine that comes with a no blame to the manufacturer if it all goes to shit Because it’s been rushed? Yes sign me up to get me and my kids vaccinated at once.
