No one can fix this apart from us

It's clear that numbers of cases are now going up rapidly. It seems likely we will copy either Spain or France but a few weeks behind. The only way to stop this is for us to change our behaviour. There is no other way.

We need to stop socialising, wear masks, wash our hands, keep our distance and not decide to break the law/do the opposite just because the govt annoys us. We don't need to wait for the govt to pass laws or tell us what to do. We already know.

No one can fix this apart from us.

@Redlocks28

Indeed, but many people going to work and school can’t socially distance-there just isn’t room.
Yep so in every other part of life we need to step up and take responsibility.

Sadly most people are sheep.

BabyLlamaZen · 12/09/2020 14:07

@PennyDreadfuI and yet it can mostly be done distanced. That has ALWAYS been the rules. No scapegoating.

Eyewhisker · 12/09/2020 14:15

This is an airborne virus which is endemic throughout the UK. Yes, if we all lockdown it stops spreading, but once we move it starts again.

We can stop and shut down and it will stop speeding. But once we act like humans again, it will start.

Given the news on the Oxford vaccine, it could well be years away. How long do you want to spend like this?

notevenat20 · 12/09/2020 14:15

Post like yours infuriate me. The only things we are doing are supermarkets, work and school. We only see our parents. I’m not sure what else we can’t not do to stop the spread.

But it's not aimed at you. It's for people who don't realise the impending disaster and that we can stop it

In the short term, until the winter flu season is over.

I think everyone has 'realised the problem' by now.

I don't think that's right. The problem I mean is the rearrival of exponential growth. We are potentially at the start of a second wave.

I am in close contact with approx 100 people per day with no PPE. That's okay because it's work, but I shouldn't do anything else or see anyone outside of work?

Yes. It's shit but we are in a pandemic.

We can't 'stop it'. The virus is here to stay.

Do you know how condescending you sound?

NotAKaren · 12/09/2020 14:28

Most people are doing the best they can and it is shameful to be blamed by an incompetent government who actively encouraged people to go out to pubs and restaurants and to get back to work because it was deemed safe to do so. So here we are with cases soaring and a testing system not fit for purpose. Not only this, the new rule of six allows even more opportunities for households to mix, potentially one person could have 5 people from different households over for a social gathering, how is this a good idea?

PennyDreadfuI · 12/09/2020 14:30

So let me get this right... You're saying that people should do nothing and see nobody, outside of work? Even if their work requires them to be at close quarters with hundreds of others, with no PPE? There's no risk at work but lots of risk going for a meal, say?
Bewareoftheblob · 12/09/2020 14:34

@PennyDreadfuI

I also think the OP is suggesting that because of the work I do, I should stay at home to protect others...

Jrobhatch29 · 12/09/2020 14:38

Or maybe the virus will just do what viruses do regardless. Sick of these threads blaming people. Fair enough be angry at people having parties etc but the vast majority have been following the rules for months and have given up alot. On a normal weekend we would be out shopping, cinema, bowling, soft play, kids parties, seeing family, date nights, kids sleeping at grandparents etc. Instead we have been for yet another walk and we were all bored shitless!

Quite right too! In fact none of us should ever leave the house EVER and maybe consider sealing our doors and windows permanently and having all our shopping delivered by drones in order to protect others.

It's the only balanced, caring thing to do, after all.

The least I could do for Queen and Country.

Oh well, I'm sure a post from a random person on MN will convince them.
RingtheBells · 12/09/2020 14:48

Its people like you OP which make people not want to follow the rules. Busybody, we know to wash hands, SD, blah blah blah. who do you think you are to tell people what to do.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. And please stop being hysterical. There is no "impending disaster" in sight.

We can stop maleria. We can stop people starving. We cannot stop a virus. We have been trying to stop flu for generations and haven't managed it yet - and that is with vaccines.

True, so we will need to do everything we can outside of those settings.

Agree. I don't know why this is so difficult for so many others to understand.

Luckyme2 · 12/09/2020 14:52

@Tomatoesneedtoripen

but you could still go out every night mixing with 5 people we need to follow Belgium
At a distance of 2m apart (or 1m if necessary) unless they’re in your household. This is the bit that people aren’t doing. Booking tables with friends etc and not distancing from them. I see it all over social media. Yes you can go out with 5 other people but you’re meant to socially distance from them
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/09/2020 14:55

What do you mean by 'stopping socialising'? I don't go out with groups of friends but I'm planning out going out with DH, my uncle and his partner. I'm also planning on a few weekends away (which I am aware could be cancelled). Are you saying all I should be doing is going to work?

While I'm allowed to I'll be going out for meals, away for the weekend. It's bad enough being banned by the government so I'm going it enjoy it while I can.

AmelieTaylor · 12/09/2020 14:56

@KitKatastrophe. you're on a hiding to nothing.

I do agree with you though. People need to realise that people spread the virus. It can't spread itself & the Govt can't spread or stop it.

The GOVT CAN support people to stop spreading it
The GOVT could encourage WFH instead of Go Back to Offices (but then they'd have to support the other businesses that suffer then)
GOVT coukd do more to encourage & support Education from Home/blended learning.

& so so much more, but the fact is people spread The virus & WE do need to take responsibility, go beyond the laws to restrict transmission, just because something is permitted doesn't mean we have to do it!!

& to the PP with the poorly child. If everyone was being as careful as you, your DC might not be unwell - no one is blaming your DC at all!!

@PennyDreadfuI No, we're not saying people who work in high contact jobs shouldn't socialise, we're saying EVERYONE should keep their socialising to a bare minimum!

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 14:58

@Eyewhisker

Given the news on the Oxford vaccine, it could well be years away. How long do you want to spend like this?

What are you referring to exactly?

If you're referring to the temporary halt to testing because if the bloke that's unwell - it's normal & insignificant (not to him obviously!! - but to the whole program, to have a temporary halt to testing.

IcedPurple · 12/09/2020 14:58

People like the OP make up 'rules' - eg 'stopping socialising' - and then get all indignant that people aren't 'following' them.

Still, great that she's here to tell us all to wash our hands and wear masks. I'd never have known any of that if I hadn't clicked on this link, but now that I have, my behaviour will change completely as a result.
