Anyone in the North East?

Gateshead has just been added to the govt watchlist and Newcastle is on amber alert. Sunderland have had over 200 cases in the past seven days.

Are we next for a local lockdown? What do you think it will entail? Given Newcastle's reputation as a party city I'm guessing restricted hours for bars maybe - they were packed to the rafters over the August bank holiday weekend, which may account for lots of the new cases.

@PennyDreadfuI morning

I have never posted this much on a thread. Honestly it is really nice to have others feeling the same. Thanks for starting it. Hope we can use it for ongoing support.

I am doing some work with Northumbria uni on a project and I'm not sure they are actually doing any in person teaching. So I do feel for the students who will have come to sit in their accommodation trying to do a degree online.

I think the unis and students bring quite a lot to the area. So although they might cause a temporary blip in numbers I firstly don't think that's where the real problem is. I also think it's a trade off with what it brings to the area and personally I think it really improves it.

Thiswillbeinteresting · 17/09/2020 08:12

Morning all, just waiting for the inevitable announcement now. Although, as I am in Teesside I dont think we are included, but as cases are rising I'm not sure why not Confused

I agree with pp, it's great to have a local support thread, and LOVE the idea of a zoom pizza and wine night Grin

Fruitbowlflowers · 17/09/2020 08:17

I really hope we manage to get this under control.
May saving grace is that DS can still go to school at the moment. We’re supposed to be going away to wear dale this weekend I hope we can still go.
I’m up for a lockdown support thread, especially when there are people who are feeling desperately low and down and alone. Take care everyone.

Shitfuckoh · 17/09/2020 08:18

Also just waiting for the announcement.
The difference between now & March was atleast in March we were all in the same boat. Now it's more divided.
Not sure many people round where I am were sticking to the ''rules'' anyway but even after news of this broke, people were saying they wouldn't stick to it.

I'm struggling to see an end in sight. The blubbering one hasn't helped telling people if we get numbers down then we may have a ''normal'' Christmas. Everytime he opens his mouth & says something I'm filled with dread.

OutComeTheWolves · 17/09/2020 08:20

@beansonbread that's ridiculous. It sounds like you're having a nightmare. It should not be this difficult to get a test. I think something all of the countries who've dealt with this well have in common is that they were on the ball with testing from the very start. We've made an absolute shambles of it.

I am glad I've found this thread. It's nice to have a little north east bubble.

Metallicalover · 17/09/2020 08:24

@OutComeTheWolves

Do we think this will include using parents as childcare? My little ones nursery is at full capacity, I can't book them in for any more days but I have to go into work.
Myself and my husband will struggle to work if we can't. I only work part time and they only look after her 1-2 days per week depending on shifts. Frontline NHS workers also If the rules allow us to send her to be cared for by strangers who look after a lot of other children she can be looked after by 2 close relatives!!
Scrunchcake · 17/09/2020 08:27

Budge up, lads. Any room on the support bench?

I'm in Co Durham, just found this thread. Hugs to everyone who is finding the news a worry.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 17/09/2020 08:31

My parents are due to holiday with friends in Alnwick. I'm not from the area so don't know it. Would this be covered under the areas they've suggested will be in the lockdown?

PennyDreadfuI · 17/09/2020 08:31

Did someone say pizza and wine 👀

Yes, it's lovely to talk to fellow north easterners, even if the circumstances are a bit shit. When All This is over we should have a north east support group night out!

Yes - Northumberland (where Alnwick is) is going to be included according to the reports.

Co. Durham here. Feeling a bit agitated.

Frazzled2207 · 17/09/2020 08:38

@Metallicalover
Childcare by relatives has effectively been banned in GM since the end of July - is ridiculous.
That said plenty of people are ignoring that rule as they have no other option.

Ranunculi · 17/09/2020 08:41

@fib11235 your sister would be allowed to travel to Cornwall but not allowed to mix with another household while she’s there. So she wouldn’t be allowed to attend your wedding. How sad for you Flowers

DrivingHelpMe · 17/09/2020 08:43

North west Durham here. I’m not doing too well with this news. I didn’t think for a second that County Durham would be included. I know we had the outbreak in Stanley but it seemed to be under control and our numbers are nowhere near as high as Sunderland and South Tyneside for example.

PennyDreadfuI · 17/09/2020 08:45

@DrivingHelpMe it does seem to be a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut doesn't it. As far as I know cases in Northumberland are pretty low too but it's going to be included.

Sorry you're not doing so well. I know how you feel. It's shit isn't it Flowers

DrivingHelpMe · 17/09/2020 08:49

@PennyDreadfuI I think Northumberland’s rate is even lower than C Durham.

I think what worries me is that we will be stuck in an endless limbo for a long while now. I don’t think cases will reduce to such an extent that we will get out of lockdown. I worry that we will just be forgotten about. Some places in the NW have been in lockdown for ages now with no sign of removal.

I think it is preemptive with the imminent return of students and a therefore a spike in cases ?
Bearfrills · 17/09/2020 08:50

Apparently there are going to be mobile testing units set up in Ashington and Blyth, I'm not sure there'll be in the other lockdown areas but I imagine they'll get some too, which is good news for anyone struggling to get tested as it should make it a but easier to actually get an appointment.

Got DD's results this morning and they're negative Smile

Ranunculi · 17/09/2020 08:52

They’re locking down the whole region because otherwise the numpties will travel to another town to drink and socialise. They don’t want Newcastle residents escaping lockdown and curfew by driving to Durham to drink and eat out.

BoJoTookMyMojo · 17/09/2020 08:53

If it's because of students, they shouldn't lock the rest of us down. Why should we suffer because they've come from all over with covid and can't obey rules?
This is pure evil. Its a human rights violation to isolate people like this, why isn't there an outcry?

shesgonebatshitagain · 17/09/2020 08:56

Oh this is really sad
@fib11235
I’m sorry this has happened to you

@Ranunculi
So I could drive to this town outside the local lockdown areas and collect my new kitten with strict social distancing in place or waiting until she was in her sanitised cat carrier in the front garden before I get out of my car?

So surreal

I am. It sure how much it will be obeyed in real life as people have had enough

We have relatives that drove for hours last Sunday to come and see us. Then Monday hit then this. Still haven’t seen them due to numbers rule then this hit.

And people can still go out drinking until 10pm so the damage has largely been done

Ranunculi · 17/09/2020 08:59

My understanding is that you’re allowed to leave the lockdown area and go on holiday as long as you isolate and don’t mix with other households while you’re there.

Thiswillbeinteresting · 17/09/2020 09:02

@fib11235 I really hope there's a solution re your wedding Flowers

@Bearfrills glad DD's test was negative, does that mean she can go back to school?

@DrivingHelpMe I havent checked the actual numbers for a while, but I think Teesside are higher than Durham, so I was also surprised that Durham is going ahead and not us Confused

It's all such a mess Sad
