Dance classes illegal from Monday?

DD goes to ballet classes and there are more than 6 pupils all from different schools. Term only started this week. Assuming they will have to close down again now? Or is Ballet a "team sport" as exempted from the new rules?

He did say that about groups in a gym of no more than 6. For me plus 5 it’s not viable to do.

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 20:22

"youth groups and activities" will include the vast majority of kids' stuff.

Grown up sewing groups and performing arts stuff though - unclear sadly

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 20:23

@delatron see guidance cut and pasted above. Not worth listening to boris - here it is in black and white.

JacobReesMogadishu · 09/09/2020 20:24

Yes, had just seen that list. So exercise classes are fine. Thank God!

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 20:25

From the looks of it, adult hobby groups/classes that arent exercise or sport are a no Sad

Delatron · 09/09/2020 20:28

Ah thanks @Frazzled2207 yep the advice not to listen to Boris is good advice!

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 20:28

@SqidgeBum
not necessarily i don't think if you are able to subdivide into groups of 6. But that does seem very short sighted. Hopefully someone will realise and update that.

I agree. Though the woman who runs the craft class I was supposed to go to reckons it can go ahead with more than 10 because she’s a business. I think she’s wrong......she’s refunding me.

I wonder though how many other similar business are under the impression they can go ahead.

RedRumTheHorse · 09/09/2020 20:34

@JacobReesMogadishu

I’m unsure about gym classes. In Boris speech, He says about gyms there can be more than six in the building but groups can’t be bigger than 6. Which suggests only 5 participants and an instructor per class?
It can be argued that gym classes are an "organised sport".

When I use to do team sports some of our training was basically the same as gym classes. In fact at university, we were all specifically told that a fitness class was part of our weekly training and we all should turn up unless we had lectures.

GlacindaTheTroll · 09/09/2020 20:36

I'm not making it up, and nothing I have said is incompatible in any way whatsoever with the government publications.

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 20:38

Exercise classes under the list of exemptions.

In fact most 'sport' type stuff as well as anything for kids should be ok. Adult hobby groups is definitely tricky, though you could argue it comes under 'education' as lots of these you would be learning something.

MrsAvocet · 09/09/2020 20:38

Looks like our kids training sessions will be ok then even though ots not a tram sport but I think I am going to wait for the promised clarification from our governing body before I inform parents.Dont want to be messing them around any more than can be helped.

MrsAvocet · 09/09/2020 20:38

Team sport even. No trams involved.

I don’t read it that way at all. As long as they are not primarily a social activity, they can. Classes can go ahead, especially if there’s a paid teacher. It’s education for the students, and work for the teacher.
Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 20:43

i do wonder about grown up choirs/orchestras/performing arts though.

I think crafty stuff you could put under 'education' but that is a massive gap. Clearly the government has no interest in savings the arts at all in this pandemic.

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 20:43

there is separate performing arts guidance but I think that refers to professional outfits. Not entirely clear though.

MrsAvocet · 09/09/2020 20:54

I've just seen a post on our Village Hall Facebook page saying that the adult creative writing and painting classes are still on as they are education. No mention of any of the musical activities though.

stovetopespresso · 09/09/2020 20:56

riding lessons? my daughter was in a group of 9 today?? is it acaprt, education? does it make a difference its outdoors? they've sacrifices common sense for "simplocity"

You do not have to reduce your capacity. You do have to ensure people don’t huddle in groups.
ceeveebee · 09/09/2020 20:59

This is from the government FAQs

3.16 Can I play sport outside? Does this now need to be limited to 6 people?
You can play team sport in any number if this is formally organised by a sports club or similar organisation and sports-governing body guidance has been issued. You should only be playing team sports where the relevant governing body has published guidance on how to do so safely. For example, the English Cricket Board has published guidance here and the FA has published guidance here. If you are playing one of these sports informally, such as in the park or a private garden, there must be no more than 30 people involved (including participants, coaches, umpires, spectators).

Team sports that do not have approved guidance should not be played if you cannot socially distance from people you do not live with. Instead, people should train together and take part in activities such as conditioning or fitness sessions in groups of no more than six people (outdoors).

When playing sports informally with people you don’t live with, you must limit the size of your group to 6. It will be illegal to do so in a larger group from 14 September.

At all times, you should comply with COVID-19 Secure measures and limit social interaction outside of the sporting activity.

I think Glacinda is owed an apology!

ceeveebee · 09/09/2020 21:02

And actually we are a FTSE100 company and we are checking everything we do with our insurers to ensure that cover will not be excluded. Perfectly sensible thing to do. Many insurers and lawyers are viewing this is the next asbestosis in terms of claim liability....

Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 21:04

Not sure why Glacinda was doubted, she’s corrected. A lot of stuff I could do was only on the basis of my insurance go ahead too!

Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 21:04

*correct

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 21:18

@stovetopespresso
“Youth groups” are ok so assuming it’s all kids should be fine

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/09/2020 21:23

So can it be summed up as 'if you are paying or are paid to be there, it's fine. If it's just friends, its 6 people'.

(I know some Youth groups are voluntary organisations)
