Dance classes illegal from Monday?

DD goes to ballet classes and there are more than 6 pupils all from different schools. Term only started this week. Assuming they will have to close down again now? Or is Ballet a "team sport" as exempted from the new rules?

I thought organised learning activities/classes were still allowed to go ahead as long as Covid secure - which they would have to have been to re open in the first place.

Most of these activities have governing bodies who have been working with government - Swim England etc.

Snailsetssail · 09/09/2020 14:24

@HereForTheTinsel no I doubt you will be allowed within law to do this.

cheeseismydownfall · 09/09/2020 14:24

If I was feeling bitter which I am the specific reference to "team sports" is coming from a hugely privileged leadership for whom anything sporting = rugby, cricket, lacrosse etc, and who are ignorant of the fact that man, many adults and children rely on a vastly more broad range of activities for their physical and metal well being. Fuck them, the fuckers.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/09/2020 14:25

DDs a swimmer, they've been back 6 weeks and Covid related stuff is organised with military precision it'll be a shame if all the hard work the coaches, committees and parent volunteers goes to waste. The kids are only just starting to swim properly after having 5/6 months off and getting back in the swing of things. Being back swimming made everything else bare able, she'll be gutted if the have to stop. They are effectively swimming in bleach and Covid doesn't survive in chlorine but I doubt Boris and Co will care about that.

boredorboard · 09/09/2020 14:26

Ha Justin Welby may have said that his churches are not social. It will be interesting to see if the government agree!

Dance is a sport by the way - it's recognised for GCSE sports studies and professional dancers will be as fit and athletic as any other professional sports person.

Dance classes involve touching others, breathing heavily and sweating ordinarily. I guess you could social distance now if they had to if that's what they had to do to keep going. But make a bit of a mockery of school bubbles if children from different schools are all meeting up at extra curricular classes.

My understanding was that ballet classes were ok.

It's all so confusing though.

Cornishbelle · 09/09/2020 14:28

Don't forget Bojo meant to be doing a press conference at 4pm today - he may clarify things hopefully (how I still have naivety left after all this I have no idea!).

Justforphoto · 09/09/2020 14:30

Mine does ballet at a dance school who have come under education from the word go, they restart this week and I don't expect them to be affected by the change in law.

ListeningQuietly · 09/09/2020 14:32

THe chances of Johnson clarifying ANYTHING are slim

yawnsvillex · 09/09/2020 14:34

@GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit

I hate the way they make these announcements without specifying what they actually mean.
Agreed @GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit yet the comment that followed Matt Hancock was "at least now it's clear"
Hardbackwriter · 09/09/2020 14:34

I've been wondering this - I went to the first in my course of antenatal yoga classes this week; seven of us (plus instructor) in huge studio (normally would have a class of 15-20), all stay on our mats 2m apart, hand sanitiser, doors open, etc. Is that a 'sport'?

Obviously I don't think my yoga classes are a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it is a bit annoying because I suspect they'll go to being on Zoom and I wouldn't have paid for them if I'd known that in advance.

SellFridges · 09/09/2020 14:35

The guidelines have not changed. The law that enforces them has. If groups were Covid secure and had a valid risk assessment they would continue to be allowed.

MrsAvocet · 09/09/2020 14:36

My DD is a dance teacher, though not in England, and is very worried as she has only just got back to work. She's desperately hoping to be able to continue as they have quite extensive precautions in place already.
The governing body of the sport I coach has requested clarification from the government and is saying that clubs will be updated within 48 hours. I will be gutted if we have to stop as its been a huge amount of work to get things running again and I just can't get my head around why it is ok for my children to be in school with over a thousand others, on the school bus with 60 from mixed year groups, but potentially not ok to do their hobby in a wide open outdoor space? Well, we could run something in very small groups but it would be very limited, need more coaches and be financially very disadvantageous to the club.Sad

doadeer · 09/09/2020 14:37

I run a yoga business we have 400 bookings for Sept. This is so unclear. We follow social distancing and everything is pre booked etc.

Are we classed as organised team sport?

anniegun · 09/09/2020 14:37

The PM is due to explain all later this afternoon - which I guarantee will cause even more confusion! However that will probably be when the govt website is update , and that is usually the best place to get information direct and unfiltered

EmilySpinach · 09/09/2020 14:39

'Covid-secure' team sports are apparently permitted to continue. Cynically I think this is partly to maintain the revenue from the big cash cows like the premier league and F1. On a more local level I think these restrictions are likely to be for the medium to long term and need to be as sustainable as possible and a full ban on sports, dance etc classes would send many businesses under.

Yes, I think this is right. My DD clubs have all been risk-assessed with proper Covid-secure policies in place.
SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 14:42

@Eloundahigh

my sewing classes re started today. Seven plus teacher We were told they can continue.
ooooh good! My crafting group is due to restart next week. I have been LIVING for it. Its the only 'me time' I have without kids. It would be amazing if it could go ahead.
Chickenitalia · 09/09/2020 14:43

I’ve had messages today that my kids martial arts and dance classes are fine as they are ‘Covid secure’, They stay well away from each other in a large hall. Still waiting to hear on Cubs and Guides. They make these announcements late at night to avoid scrutiny I’m sure.

FurForksSake · 09/09/2020 14:45

I think these things might be ok as they aren't social gatherings and weren't restricted to 2 households etc before, they had different rules.

We shall see!

shesellsseashells99 · 09/09/2020 14:47

Came on here to ask the same thing! Hope there is some clarification soon on it.

daisypond · 09/09/2020 14:48

It’s work, though, for the teachers. If they are paid, it’s their job. And workplaces stay open. Those attending are in education and it’s a sport. It’s valid on three points.

Justforphoto · 09/09/2020 14:48

We've had confirmation that our brownies is continuing as an online meeting. I believe that is the recommendation from the guide association (according to our leader)

EmilySpinach · 09/09/2020 14:52

Girlguiding UK have issued updated guidance today (www.girlguiding.org.uk/making-guiding-happen/coronavirus-keeping-safe/). Indoor meetings remain suspended for now. Some outdoor meetings are permitted if the relevant risk assessments are done. I don't know about Scouts.

JuneFromBethesda · 09/09/2020 14:52

I'm wondering the same thing for my daughters' gymnastics classes, which haven't even started up yet (due to resume in a few weeks).

Not to mention the HIIT classes I've been going to recently - these take place outdoors and I'm on my way to losing my lockdown weight gain, I will be gutted if they have to stop Sad
