Dance classes illegal from Monday?

DD goes to ballet classes and there are more than 6 pupils all from different schools. Term only started this week. Assuming they will have to close down again now? Or is Ballet a "team sport" as exempted from the new rules?

@Deelish75 I hope so! I have just spent hours and hours getting a community space I manage ready for groups to return.

Augustbreeze · 09/09/2020 14:56

Yes wait for the government written announcement of changes.

Justin Welby has checked with government before his Tweet apparently!

bestbefore · 09/09/2020 14:57

Guiding was due to update this week anyway so I think for now they are just saying no new news....

Quartz2208 · 09/09/2020 14:57

I would have thought they are ok. Anything that has risk assessments and covid secure plans (track and trace/SD etc) is not included. Things which if a positive result occurs can easily self isolate and not spread.

It is meet ups that are not controlled that they are cracking down on. Things for which they have no idea are going on or contact details

Based on the summary on the BBC website and absolute lack of additional info on the government website i think you'll have to wait and see what the full list of exemptions says.

Layladylay234 · 09/09/2020 15:09

I just emailed my son's martial arts teacher about the whole "team sports" thing and he said they'd be fine.

We're still ok as we're governed and insured sport/activity. The 6 people indoor/outdoor rule is for social gatherings with reduced distancing.
So for instance if 6 mates wanted to head to the park for a kick-about or something.

I hope he's right

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/09/2020 15:13

For Scouts, indoor has been permitted since last week, but no group I know is. Outdoor we could have 15 kids.

At our leader meeting last night it was decided to temporarily close the Beavers. Cuba moving to a mixture of online and outside. Scouts meeting monthly at campsite, online in between.

RingtheBells · 09/09/2020 15:14

Obviously the full government list won't be available until at least Monday as it either arrives a couple of hours before or after the event, it is never there in a timely fashion.

DH has some organised running events booked, he isn't sure whether they will be included

herecomesthsun · 09/09/2020 15:14

My daughter normally has

  • ballet lessons
  • drama lessons x2
  • modern dance lessons
  • singing lessons
  • swimming lessons (was twice a week)
  • plus extra hockey or racket spots at school
  • Sunday school
  • craft activity after school
-coding club

We have been shielding and we haven't got back to any of it yet,

I figured school was going to use up all of our family's risk budget.

We are starting keyboard lessons at school which can go on line if school gets interrupted.

It's a great shame though

BubblyBarbara · 09/09/2020 15:16

If a dance class is OK, then I am going to start up a franchise of "drinking clubs" in local village halls and make a mint! I'm calling it Bubbly Barbara's Beverage Brou-ha-ha!

EDSGFC · 09/09/2020 15:18

Allowing things like sewing groups or book clubs to continue makes a mockery of the new restrictions to meet ups though surely?

If they allow those then what stops friends or families from meeting up under the guise of a book club?

Allthegoodnamesweretakenalread · 09/09/2020 15:20

I've had an email cancelling my daughter's swim lesson this week pending further government guidelines. She will be gutted, only had one lesson before they shut down again! Such a shame, it was all Covid secure as well.

user1471530109 · 09/09/2020 15:25

Our scouting group (beavers, cubs, scouts etc) have been meeting up outside all summer on a rota with no more than 15 including leaders.
I hadn't heard anything from the brownie leader so thank you for the above pp.

My two will find stopping swimming and dancing really hard if that is the new guidance/law. But at the same time, the dance school is in an area with rapidly rising cases and the whole thing is on a knife edge as it is Sad.

MJMG2015 · 09/09/2020 15:29

@JuneFromBethesda

I'm wondering the same thing for my daughters' gymnastics classes, which haven't even started up yet (due to resume in a few weeks).

Not to mention the HIIT classes I've been going to recently - these take place outdoors and I'm on my way to losing my lockdown weight gain, I will be gutted if they have to stop Sad

They won't have to stop, they might just have to be smaller classes & people might need to be prepared to pay a bit more.

Are any of those groups someone’s job? Is there a paid teacher? I think that makes a difference.

But what's the difference between those and a gym class? Exercise? Is that it? Both are for mental health, both are hobbies, and both are money makers for the people running them. It's a bit unfair to rule one out and not the other when they both pose the same level of risk.
iamabox · 09/09/2020 15:40

My son attends a karate class twice a week, and I text his teacher to ask what would happen.

He replied that as it's considered a team sport the classes were still going ahead, only now all parents have to wear a mask.

Fingers crossed for you

OhDear2200 · 09/09/2020 15:44

I will lose my shit if hobbies cancelled again. I’ve spent bloody ages arranging all the hobbies and fitting it all in with the new times and guidelines. My DS lives for sport he will go crazy if any of it is cancelled!!!

Once again the children could lose out.

Can we please close pissing pubs before stopping sport clubs!!!!

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 15:45

i run an after school activity. I suspect anything that can come under 'education' or 'sport' will be ok. One of my colleagues runs sessions out of her own premises which arguably is her 'workplace'.

We have been given specific guidelines earlier this summer and have been preparing as such. I'd be surprised and very pissed off it that is all now meaningless. Point is we can run in a covid-secure way. The announcement did definitely seem to suggest that it was 'social interactions' that they were trying to curtail.

DOINGOURBIT · 09/09/2020 15:46

Confused - isn't anything activity other than work related considered 'social?' Even church. It's a gathering of people who aren't obliged economically to be there. Oh, wait, dance and sport teachers are economically obliged to work - see, well confused now.

nosswith · 09/09/2020 15:51

Most forms of dance where there are no partners surely can social distance for classes, if not for performances?

We might get clarification when Mr Johnson does his waffle at 4pm. Here's hoping but then again it is Mr Johnson.

TW2013 · 09/09/2020 15:53

Exercise classes I would have thought would be higher risk due to the rate of respiration than a craft club.

Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 15:53

i honestly wouldn't listen to Boris. But hopefully government guidance will be published later this pm.

QuestionMarkNow · 09/09/2020 16:00

My dcs are playing tennis. It's going ahead (actually they will be starting again for the first time since lockdown next week)
