Dance classes illegal from Monday?

DD goes to ballet classes and there are more than 6 pupils all from different schools. Term only started this week. Assuming they will have to close down again now? Or is Ballet a "team sport" as exempted from the new rules?

Listening to the radio this lunchtime, my "take" on this was that the police would only be willing to disperse/fine large social groups if the law was more prescriptive. I don't think they are going to storm into a public pool or gym and turf out the clients who are exercising in a thoroughly risk assessed environment. Well let's hope not!

Swim England is being quite bullish www.swimming.org/swimengland/statement-new-government-guidelines/

Boris is supposed to be speaking at 4pm (but we'll presumably find out what they really mean at 9pm on Sunday).

Fingers crossed

newlabelwriter · 09/09/2020 16:07

DD literally started a new gym class last night, they've emailed this afternoon to let us know when her new class will be so assuming all fine.

Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 16:09

It's unlikely this will affect classes and gyms - we are still awaiting official word however.
In scotland the lockdowns have been more focused on home gatherings

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 09/09/2020 16:11

I’ve been told that my legs bums and tums class won’t be running. This was my first week back but it’s not viable to run with five attendees and a teacher.

Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 16:11

@TW2013

Exercise classes I would have thought would be higher risk due to the rate of respiration than a craft club.
You would think - but there hasnt been any reported issues relating to gyms since they opened
Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 16:14

It has been announced that gyms are staying open - dance classes are within this.

loulouljh · 09/09/2020 16:15

It's organised sport i think....

Absolutely ferkin useless

Delatron · 09/09/2020 16:20

Boris has mentioned gyms but then said something about not forming a group of more than 6?

I’ve read all the updated guidance and I can’t work out what this means for private exercise classes.
Gyms are fine, team sports are fine. But what about an exercise class of day 12?

daisypond · 09/09/2020 16:26

you must not meet with people from other households socially in groups of more than 6.

I think “socially“ is the operative word there. A gym class, a dance class aren’t specifically social activities, though, like all gatherings, they have a social element. There is a paid instructor. A group of friends in a sewing group I’m not sure about.

whensmynexthol1day · 09/09/2020 16:26

They've just said 'organised sport' is ok. So presume this fits into that bracket

Lovelydovey · 09/09/2020 16:32

What about if you organise sport yourself - so a five a side match (at a 5 a side venue) arranged for a group of friends? (Without any additional socialising, or socialising in smaller groups).

I'm in same boat we have about 17 yoga classes a week. All spaced. Ventilated room. Covid measures etc.

I think we are OK

SimonJT · 09/09/2020 16:34

We’re still allowed to train/play full contact rugby.

I’m fairly certain rugby tots can still go ahead

God, I think I waffle then I listen to Johnson.

SingToTheSky · 09/09/2020 16:39

DS’ taekwondo coach said it counts as an organised sport and he’s done all the covid-safe stuff so it seems that will continue. Not heard from anyone else yet. We will go with the flow whatever happens of course but I mainly want to know about ballet because we are meant to be buying the uniform on Friday, and could really do without the expense if it’s going to be postponed again (as DD1 is a growing teen and won’t fit it for long)

I would be gutted if yoga class had to stop again.

Delatron · 09/09/2020 16:42

Thanks @doadeer

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 16:51

If people can go to a gym class but I cant go to my crochet class I am gonna be pi**ed. I dont get why sporty hobbies are ok but non sporty ones wouldnt be. There is literally no difference in risk. If anything, sweating and puffing in a room for an hour is worse than sitting learning how to do a new stitch.

Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 16:52

As long as dance classes are Covid secure , they can go ahead. There is not a limit of 6 on these. Nothing has changed the fitness industry today. The rules applies to social gatherings out with these type of business settings

Chachacha90 · 09/09/2020 16:54

I imagine if your venue has had a risk assessment and taking the necessary procedures then it shouldn’t affect your group either.
Frazzled2207 · 09/09/2020 17:05

on the plus side i have not heard anything to suggest these things cannot go ahead. agree it would be ridiculous to say that 'sport' was ok when other hobbies are not. Non sport is arguably safer.

Snailsetssail · 09/09/2020 17:08

The whole thing is stupid. I can still play full contact rugby, including matches. Yet going for a drink with six other team mates is dangerous Hmm
Snailsetssail · 09/09/2020 17:18

Oh I completely agree! I teach 150 teenagers a day but as a family of 5 can’t see my parents anymore.

DoubleTweenQueen · 09/09/2020 17:22

I've read it as social gatherings. The ballet schools we're with have carried out extensive risk assessments and completely reconfigured class sizes and distancing/cleaning regimes to keep any potential for transmission as low as possible, so I don't see the need for them to not go ahead, unless in an area where there is a high incidence and a local lockdown. Social gatherings are where such measures have not been put in place? Hope so anyway! Just paid a fortune in fees for the term.

Snailsetssail · 09/09/2020 17:25

@DoubleTweenQueen I’m very much going that’s the case for my children’s activities too
