Are you going to wash uniform every day?

I would usually wash dcs uniform on a Wednesday. They'd have two sets, fresh set on a Monday, and then they'd have a fresh set to wear to school on a Thursday, unless they'd spilt something on it or it was visibly dirty then of course it would be changed.

Are most people going to be changing theirs everyday due to Covid?

My DC is 5, uniform gets washed every day because chances are it has got lunch, sand, mud, felt tip, paint and playdoh on it. I'm doing well if the knees of tights/leggings are intact... Forest school day (fortunately old clothes suggested) generally gives me a child with mud on all items if clothing and in her hair!

I assume as DC get older they get less messy but even now I'm far more likely to drop soup on or otherwise mark a clean on hoody than one that has got through its first meal.

Not school, but my DH works in houses and we wash his uniform every day, which is a pain as it cant be tumble dried. It just involves putting the washing machine on after dinner every evening on a quick wash. I do hate how much extra energy and water its using though. We usually just did it on a Friday.

When my DD was in the first few years of school she’d come out filthy, mud, paint, glue, gravy, custard and yogurt were the usual suspects. Thanks to the super cheap school second hand sales she had more than enough uniform to see her through a week of clean clothes every day.

Now she’s in secondary it’s only a clean blouse every day, a couple of jumpers and skirts a week. I won’t be changing my washing schedule, the school haven’t asked for clean clothes daily.

When I was at secondary my uniform skirts were ruinously expensive tweed ones which were dry clean only. I’d wear the same two skirts for an entire half term.

Remmy123 · 03/09/2020 21:37

No I'm not

lljkk · 04/09/2020 07:20

DD works in a care home & we aren't even going to wash her uniform every day. She only has one tunic top. We may try hand washing it, but can't get it dry overnight anyway.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/09/2020 07:24

Our schools have said to just launder as normal now. It was clean clothes every day for keyworkers children and those year groups who were back in June and July but it isnt sustainable with expensive (and hard to get) logoed uniform.

Feellikedancingyeah · 04/09/2020 12:51

Yes wash everyday because younger kids get messy and muddy and teens need a clean top everyday for hygiene

Zoflorabore · 04/09/2020 12:54

I’m shocked that a care home only issue one item of uniform, especially during this pandemic. There is no way I would be wearing anything more than once without washing it, I’ve worked in care homes by the way so not just being judgey.

RegularHumanBartender · 04/09/2020 14:30

A child wearing the same item of clothing three days in a row or more is absolutely disgusting. Two days in a row is questionable hygiene

That is hilarious! I can't imagine how you would cope if faced with something actually disgusting. Talk about a disproportionate response. Classic MN.

ProfessorPootle · 04/09/2020 14:37

My kids must be massively messy as I pretty much wash uniforms daily anyway. They both tend to get jumpers/trousers dirty, the polo is ok sometimes and can be worn again. They get covered in food/mud/dust/pen/toothpaste daily. I’d love to only wash uniforms once or twice a week! I have a lot of uniform (includes hand me downs) so have more than enough to last a week-two weeks. Also have a tumble dryer so it’s washed and dried quickly.

They’re the same with sports kits, both do a few sports, some a few times per week so everything has to be washed ready. I have more trouble with this than the uniform as only one set of most things.

mum2jakie · 04/09/2020 15:52

It's funny how parents of young primary school age kids can't imagine how different things are with kids of secondary age. Although admittedly there is the added issue of BO with teenagers...

monkeytennis97 · 04/09/2020 15:55

If it helps, DH and I are both teachers (secondary) we are showering and washing clothes every day when we get home... putting clothes in washing machine ('quarantining') and doing a wash every two days.

SummerSummerSummertime · 04/09/2020 15:56

My boys come home so grubby every day they usually have to wear a fresh outfit each day 🤷‍♀️

CarrieFour · 04/09/2020 15:59

Yes I am.

But primary school so no blazer or anything.

morefun · 04/09/2020 18:19

Mine normally has clean shirt every day and changes the skirt / trousers after a couple of days, depending how they look. I will continue like that I think??

PablosHoney · 04/09/2020 19:54

It won’t be necessary.

areallthenamesusedup · 04/09/2020 20:07

nope....nope .....nope

Grobagsforever · 04/09/2020 20:18

Fuck no. The virus isn't a fan of cotton

kitschplease · 04/09/2020 20:47

Absolutely not

ChickenwingChickenwing · 05/09/2020 07:55

DD works in a care home & we aren't even going to wash her uniform every day.

That's awful.

HelloMissus · 05/09/2020 08:28

No.
Sticking to ty usual routine.

CarrieBlue · 05/09/2020 09:30

Four of us in four different schools. We will be washing uniform everyday and showering as soon as we’re home each day.

PablosHoney · 05/09/2020 19:43

That’s good for the environment 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mummyto3gorgeousgirlies · 05/09/2020 23:27

Absolutely and our school have asked that children are in fresh laundered clothes daily. They gave us plenty of notice in summer to allow parents to buy more (Plus our PTA also run a second hand uniform shop so for spares / extras easy enough to pick up items for 50p-£2).

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 05/09/2020 23:35

No, of course not. In fact an email from school (secondary) specifically said there is no need to wash uniform differently than normal.

Also, I live in the South East, where the current rate is 418 cases of infection per 100,000 people so I'm not worried.
