Are you going to wash uniform every day?

I would usually wash dcs uniform on a Wednesday. They'd have two sets, fresh set on a Monday, and then they'd have a fresh set to wear to school on a Thursday, unless they'd spilt something on it or it was visibly dirty then of course it would be changed.

Are most people going to be changing theirs everyday due to Covid?

My children must be messy I always have to wash their uniforms after one wear - pre-covid.

Chachacha90 · 02/09/2020 22:08

Always washed same day. Nothing’s changed.

Bol87 · 02/09/2020 22:13

Ha. I did this for one day when my daughter went back to nursery & then I just couldn’t be bothered! I just undress her at bath time & shove it in the wash basket as normal. She comes in & washes her hands. That’s good enough for me. If she’s gona catch it, then she will. And if I’m gona catch it, it’ll be from her hugging me & generally being close. Not her T-shirt 🙈

Pinkmakeupbag · 02/09/2020 22:15

I'm not sure about the PE kit thing.

Maybe so that they don't get their clothes muddled up?

To be honest a lot of the rules don't make sense to me.

Our school are operating a one way system. Looked great on paper, but reality it's just resulted in a huge bottle neck getting in and out,

Mine do get a fresh shirt daily and trousers/jumper every 2/3 days. They go in the washing bin and I’ll wash when I need to. I am not wasting electricity and water washing a handful of items of uniform a day.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/09/2020 22:20

Yes. But I always have. We wash our clothes after one wearing even if just for a few hours. Some of these stories are disgusting.

BettyBizzghetti · 02/09/2020 22:21

In short: not bloody likely.

TheresGotToBeMoreToLife · 02/09/2020 22:30

Yes but DS has 5 poloshirts, 5 trousers etc so its only the same as normal for me

TheresGotToBeMoreToLife · 02/09/2020 22:32

I do mean it will stay in the wash basket until I have a full loads worth. I wont be stripping him off and the door and boil washing it straight away. Absolutely no need!

HashtagSoup · 02/09/2020 22:39

Yes, always have.

@ZeroFuchsGiven

Our schools guidelines are 'SCHOOL UNIFORM - normal rules & expectations will be in place. The guidance states that “uniforms do not need to be cleaned any more often than normal, nor do they need to be cleaned using methods which are different from normal.”

My boys will be going in their pe kit twice a week also so uniforms will be clean on every day.

I think this comes from official guidance. I'm pretty sure the head at my school wrote exactly the same in their letter to parents, saying they were following the current advice.
seven201 · 02/09/2020 22:51

Found it on a news website.

The Department for Education (DfE) has released updated guidance on what parents and carers need to know about schools and colleges during Covid-19 for the 2020 summer term. Issued on 30 June, the changes to previous guidance include a new section on school uniform.
The DfE update states ‘uniforms do not need to be cleaned any more often or differently than usual’. Also, that ‘there is no need for anything other than normal personal hygiene and washing of clothes following a day in a school’.

I'll second the nurse above and say I'm an ex nurse with some specialist infection prevention training.

To get enough virus for their clothes to be infective the person would most certainly have become infected themselves.

There is also still arguments as to if clothing can be transmit enough Virus/ bacteria in normal circumstances to infect anyone it has been shown it can but in limited scenarios the one I remember was a hospital laundry that had an excess of lint that was nice and warm and damp so a great home for nasties it got on scrubs and fell into surgical wounds.
From what I recall clothing picks up & deposits very little bacteria.

Our hands are a different story & don't even get me started on the disposable gloves some people are wearing 🤦‍♀️
There's an interesting paper here with some good information www.ifh-homehygiene.org/IntegratedCRD.nsf/eb85eb9d8ecd365280257545005e8966/d0e3b0f361079f1780

Don’t you feel bad about wasting of resources and unnecessary use of detergent and the environment?

There’s a sensible halfway house between wearing dirty clothes and washing basically clean clothes that have only been on a couple of hours! Would you honestly wash a pair of jeans for example after only wearing them a few hours even if they weren’t dirty? Ridiculous

Nochangeplease · 02/09/2020 23:13

Wow this thread is an eye opener. I assumed the majority of people washed uniform every day anyway and most of the ones that didn’t would be becuase they couldn’t afford to but clearly not.
I’m on a low income so no judgement about that.

I have one in primary and use fresh trousers, polo and jumper everyday. Would sometimes reuse a jumper if it’s been in bag most of the day. I tend to have 3-4 sets of uniform for youngest as it’s cheap, with a few logo bits.

Oldest always had the same in primary. Now in secondary, fresh shirt and skirt everyday and again I have enough of those and they just automatically get thrown in the wash at the end of the day anyway. She doesn’t often wear jumpers but I certainly won’t be washing the blazer every day. I only have one. Maybe I should invest in another.

MadameBlobby · 02/09/2020 23:13

Also what “stores are disgusting” @PlanDeRaccordement? I haven’t seen anyone say they send their kids to school in dirty clothes?

Nochangeplease · 02/09/2020 23:13

Mine don’t get changed after school either. Even if they look clean (they don’t) they smell of school lunches Grin

MadameBlobby · 02/09/2020 23:15

Yes, as the guidelines tell you to. FFS I don't know why people are questioning

Not in our guidelines it doesn’t. Plus I’ve managed to successfully run a home and raise 2 children without the council telling me how often to wash clothes, so I won’t be following any such “guidelines” now, even if they existed.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/09/2020 23:39

@MadameBlobby

Also what “stores are disgusting” *@PlanDeRaccordement*? I haven’t seen anyone say they send their kids to school in dirty clothes?
A child wearing the same item of clothing three days in a row or more is absolutely disgusting. Two days in a row is questionable hygiene. I suppose these children aren’t even showering or bathing every day either. I can’t imagine a child washing and then willingly putting on the same dirty trousers or dress they wore the day(s) before.
MadameBlobby · 02/09/2020 23:42

Oh, give us peace. Heaven help you if you actually ever did come across something properly disgusting.

colouringindoors · 02/09/2020 23:44

sickoffamilydrama thanks that's v helpful.

middleager · 02/09/2020 23:45

I'm not going to do it as I don't believe it necessary. I'm not joining in the circus.

But this article is right - not everybody has the luxury of being able to wash and dry (sometimes multiple) uniforms

Cecilia2016 · 02/09/2020 23:45

@KingaRoo

What is the reasoning behind students being told to come in with PE kit on when they have PE? What is the risk from changing into PE kit at school? This is what my primary is doing.
My dds secondary school said because of the area where they change doesn’t have enough space to accommodate them without them being crowded and lockers won’t be in use. My 6 year old son will be doing the same too. He will be going in PE kit Thursday and Friday
winetime89 · 02/09/2020 23:50

Both my kids uniforms are filthy everyday so we just have to have a set for each day or it would be a nightmare keeping on top of it.

SueEllenofDallas · 03/09/2020 01:50

Why are your kids uniforms filthy after one day?
