My ndn, a nurse, has known 2 personally who have died.

TheVanguardSix · 01/09/2020 11:57

Personally, O.

Distantly, 1- neighbour's friend's DH who was at the end of a long cancer battle when he got COVID. His wife and children did not get COVID.

HoneyBee03 · 01/09/2020 12:28

I know none, not even heard of any friends of friends or relatives getting it.

mindutopia · 01/09/2020 13:22

I know 5, I think. At least 4 had it quite badly that I know of (2 went to hospital but not admitted but found it all very scary and really struggled to breathe, 1 was in ICU on ventilator). Another was a work colleague, so I really don't know how severely she was ill at the time, but she is still working reduced hours due to continuing symptoms (she was ill in March). Another was a friend's mum who died. With the exception of friend's mum (who was 80), all in 30s and 40s and quite healthy and active people.

This thread makes it sound like the death rate is significantly higher than 1%. Is that because of many asymptomatic cases where people don't know they were infected and so no one else knows they were either?

Most people don't share their minor ailments with all and sundry. So you might know someone who has been ill or in hospital, but not the others who've just spent a couple of days in bed.
mac12 · 01/09/2020 19:24

So sorry for everyone who has lost someone Flowers
I know about ten people who have had it here & in US with a mix of outcomes (some really really poorly, some fairly mild) - no deaths but at least three have had horrible & frightening complications & lingering symptoms (only one of those had initial severe infection)
I don’t know her personally but my sister’s friend has lost two friends. Though my husband’s job, I know 2 kids with post Covid issues & another whose kid was hospitalised with PIMS-TS
I really struggle to understand those who think it’s all a hoax Confused

AllPlayedOut · 01/09/2020 19:30

Three.

One 82 years old who lives in a nursing home in Washington State. Obese, diabetic, lung condition and has had heart surgery in the past. He was weaker than usual for about 7 days but no other symptoms.

Nurse on a Covid ward in Portugal. Felt pretty rough for about ten days. Feels perfectly fine now.

Recently. One U.K healthcare assistant who works in a major hospital. Mild symptoms.

Ineedtobecalm · 01/09/2020 19:32

1 but he's in his mid forties and had the full intensive care experience, blood clots on lungs, etc. Months later he is still nowhere near his former self. That's what frightens me, that if DH or I got it we could be invalided for months with no end in sight.

Puzzlelover · 01/09/2020 19:38

We're fairly certain my niece had it in February (in US)
Otherwise I don't know anybody who's had it, as far as I know.

Vodkacranberryplease · 01/09/2020 19:40

3 but no one died. The local pharmacists brother died and a friend of a colleague did too. And I know of 3 others that had it but didn't die.

Madcats · 01/09/2020 19:40

8! Both sets of neighbours (husband and wife, but not kids) back in February after Italy trips.
Also family friends (H, W & DD) wh work at Uni (early March, so just before lockdown).

Also DD was at a sports club where one of the older teens was ill late March.

April-August we haven't heard of anybody round here.

MsWonderful · 01/09/2020 19:56

I think 12 or 13. I can’t remember exactly. I work in a hospital though (not a covid ward) and that includes patients and staff.

iolaus · 01/09/2020 22:00

My cousin (passed away aged 47 after 3 weeks on a ventilator - no underlying health conditions)
4 colleagues (ages in mid 20s to mid 30s) (1 of their husbands and daughter also tested positive but I don't actually know them) - all fine now, none hospitalised
DH's friend - in ITU but now home and well from what he has said - both of his sisters died from it within a few days of each other, that was back at the beginning
Bumped into a couple where he used to work with DH and we've been out for dinner with each other a few times - they both had it (confirmed) neither longterm consequences in their mid-late 40s

Don’t panic. Posters on Mumsnet, on a thread like this one, are not exactly a representative sample.

Vodkacranberryplease · 01/09/2020 23:20

@TheKeatingFive I'm in London and everyone I know knows a number of people who have had it and directly or indirectly know someone that has died. Kids coming back from uni brought it back, visitors from Italy, public transport etc etc.

But to be fair that was all at the start of it really. Around May/June. I know someone that had it a couple of weeks ago though. But there's masks on public transport now and a lot of shops. So fingers crossed it's on it's way out,

Devlesko · 01/09/2020 23:39

A couple of cases at the beginning in ds2 work/ call centre. One sadly died, young man but with lots of medical problems.

A midwife I remember as being on duty when dd was born, sadly died.

My cousin recovered after a couple of weeks, she had it May and works in a care home.

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/09/2020 23:41

25-30 at the last count. 2 deaths.
.

Ickle37 · 01/09/2020 23:42

I have had it, all my friends in London have had it, 5 colleagues out of 15 have had it.
I would say out of a social circle of 75, 50 have had it. None serious.

Rumbletumbleinmytummy · 02/09/2020 08:31

In the very beginning of the outbreak DH was on site with 2 people who tested positive, and someone he had a meeting with turned back because he had to self isolate, who also turned out to be positive.

And I've got 3 friends who have all had the virus.
None of them died, but they did have it.

Yearinyearout · 02/09/2020 08:50

I know two who've actually tested positive, one of whom is still having health problems after three months, and about 6 who are sure they had it back in March (had all the main symptoms but not tested) plus one neighbour of friend who was actually very ill and ventilated for two weeks but recovered. I also think my grandmother died of it but she was in a care home and not tested (in early April)

Yes and most people had it back in Feb, march and April when we couldn't get tested so alot of Confirmed cases are the most severe.
Stringervest · 02/09/2020 09:32

I know two people with antibodies. Both have underlying conditions, said it was equivalent to having the flu and are fine now. Thirties and forties.

I know lots more suspected, all of whom are fine now. I think we have had it before widespread testing. I had it worst, bedridden for a day but after that I worked from home throughout. DD had some trouble breathing and a temp which was difficult to control but steroids from the on call doctor and ibuprofen saw her through. DH lost his sense of taste and smell for a week which is what makes me think it was covid. We are fine now.

kittensarecute · 02/09/2020 09:53

I have known exactly zero people who have had it nor have I had it myself.
