How will the economy cope with a second lockdown?

Standiethmem · 21/08/2020 22:50

I really hope there isn't a second lockdown this winter, with the amount of jobs already lost, I can't bear to think about the economy will be with another.

STA Travel has announced today they have gone bust with around 500 jobs being lost.
I feel for all these people and what a scary time it is to be in the job hunt right now.

Well, there won’t be a second lockdown. There’ll be mini lockdowns in areas with spikes but no one will comply with a blanket lockdown so it won’t happen.

Standiethmem · 21/08/2020 22:57

@Finfintytint I just see so many posts about maybe there could be a second lockdown come winter and schools closing again over winter that it gives me an anxious feeling

No there won't be a second lockdown. Just local ones. It willbe fine.

You don't really know that. It really depends on how bad it gets. Seeing spikes in Europe while we are still in summer makes me nervous.

As for the economy, god help us.

Finfintytint · 21/08/2020 23:05

So many posters are scaremongering about second lockdowns. It can’t and won’t happen. People will just ignore it. No one will put up with prolonged limitations on their lives , pandemic or not. It’s put up or shut up and just get on with it.

SilkCashmere · 21/08/2020 23:07

Things will never be the same again, including the economy.

kittensarecute · 21/08/2020 23:09

I can't cope with another lockdown, I just can't. I've barely coped with this one.

Business may be forced to not ignore, it by law. Not everyone will make people welcome inside their home during winter pandemic season.

Finfintytint · 21/08/2020 23:13

Yeah right. It’ll be ignored. Just as it is now. You make your own assessment and be sensible according to the guidance.

excellentcustard · 21/08/2020 23:13

It won't. Society will crumble - not everyone has jobs that can be done from home, and those than can still rely on others going out of the house. Supermarkets don't magic food into your house, hospitals can't perform treatment by zoom and the arts/ culture / tourism are actually more valuable than anyone seems to credit.

islockdownoveryet · 21/08/2020 23:15

There really won't be a 2nd lockdown, The only way it's worked prior is because the government paid furloughed. If we lockdown again without that it won't work . It will be local lockdown as it is now .
The government will not pay people again so therefore we won't have a lockdown again and frankly it's not necessary in my opinion.

TorkTorkBam · 21/08/2020 23:15

The government will not close the whole country again. Local areas, yes. Whole country, no chance.

KilljoysDutch · 21/08/2020 23:23

I wouldn't put any weight in what people on here say about a second lockdown not happening it was argued and denied on here constantly that masks were needed until they were, there was never going to be a second wave anywhere and we were all fear mongering about it until the second waves started happening.

Ellsbells12 · 21/08/2020 23:25

If you have a second lockdown there will be nothing to come out too it won't happen !

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/08/2020 23:32

@SilkCashmere of course they will. This isn't the worst pandemic in the history of the world. How dramatic.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/08/2020 23:33

I doubt that a second lockdown will happen. We have a Conservative government, economy is their number one priority.

isntthatnice · 21/08/2020 23:33

If we do have a second lockdown I will not comply. I've lost too much already to covid 19 and I refuse to let it affect my life any longer.

I don't think we will but my company have already said they will fold if we have a second. That's thousands of jobs

BadAbbot · 21/08/2020 23:36

I don’t think there’d be one. We never locked down as hard as other countries anyway - we were allowed to exercise (which was a good thing especially now we know it caused blood clots). And travel outside of our area for said exercise (following clarification). And jobs that couldn’t work from home could largely continue with distancing.

I think if we see another wave they’ll mess about with closing this and/or then that for a while then open it and close. Some will be local, some national. Some of it will make sense and some of it definitely won’t. Maybe they’ll ban us going to each other’s houses and go back to encouraging all who can work from home to do so and such like. But not a full lockdown. They didn’t want to do the first.

There aren’t any second waves. The spikes are all part of the first wave.
latticechaos · 21/08/2020 23:38

I don't feel a full lockdown is likely, it certainly would be dreadful economically.

I am not confident we won't need one though. I am hoping my gloom is misplaced.

I don't understand how anyone can be confident about anything right now!

Uhoh2020 · 21/08/2020 23:42

There won't be another lockdown the country cant afford it. The media will just turn the narrative too suit like always, any increase in hospital admissions and deaths will be attributed to normal levels of viruses that present over the winter months.

amusedtodeath1 · 21/08/2020 23:47

I don't think we will have nationwide lockdown unless we lose control of the infection rate to the degree that everywhere has local lockdowns at the same time.

That said though, even a local lockdown will feel exactly the same as the last one did and could potentially last just as long. The effects will be just the same, MH issues, Local area NHS compromised and having to cancel operations, etc. Local firms going bust.

I don't really understand why local lockdowns are "fine". It is the "it can't happen here" mentality?

Standiethmem · 21/08/2020 23:53

It's all really frightening,
I have been furloughed as I am in an industry that hasnt open up,
I'm hoping September to be working but if winter lockdown happens then I don't know how I will afford to live Confused

OP posts:
Standiethmem · 21/08/2020 23:53

Obviously I can find another job but the job market is awful right now!

OP posts:
amusedtodeath1 · 22/08/2020 00:22

It's beyond awful OP, hopefully though it won't be that bad with SD and face masks.

If people are sensible, it shouldn't be a problem. Flowers
