If You Could Choose Any Education Option for Sept

I'm getting so confused by what parents actually want to happen with schools right now (I'm not a parent, I'm a teacher). I want to know what home opinions my classes are going to be coming in from in Sept - whether they're likely to be nervous or confident, whether they will want to SD or not, etc.

I know parents aren't one hive mind but the 'loudest voice' seems to keep changing its mind. Or I hear different ones, idk.

I'm sure there used to be a board for polls and surveys but, if I wasn't imagining, I can't find it.

So, if you're up for an unscientific straw poll to help me gauge general feeling, can you post A, B, C, D or E in the thread (you can explain if you like, I don't mind!)
A - I want full time schooling as close to the old normal as is allowed
B - I want full time schooling but with safety measures such as social distancing and masks for all who can and are old enough.
C - I want blended learning (half in the classroom and half online)
D - I want to keep my child at home all the time, home school them and not be penalised (ie, I want my place back when I think it's safe)
E - I think schools should remain closed for most children for now.

FrippEnos · 15/08/2020 19:12

@TimeForLunch

I don't believe it will fail.
I hope that it doesn't but that wasn't the question

so again
A question for all those voting A

If this fails

Who are you going to blame for

1/ It failing?
and
2/ There being no back up plan?

Unfortunately the same posters that were comparing schools and countries at the beginning of this don't like it when you do so now because it goes someway to prove them wrong.

askmehowiknow · 15/08/2020 19:14

Don't teachers realise that Brexit is as damaging for the younger generation as not educating them? I'm genuinely surprised.

Also loving their interpretation of the data. I guess what would I know though 😉

Why do think they will blame anyone. They want it to be tried. Fear of blame can’t stop people trying to move on from the worst position
TimeForLunch · 15/08/2020 19:15

Not a hoax but certainly not worthy of the hysteria around schools opening after being closed to most for 6 months.

I assume @noblegiraffe knows people who think it's a hoax and it's influencing her opinion. I've never met anyone who has this bizarre opinion!

@SengaStrawberry

I think many parents just don’t get the situation we are in.

How patronising.

We have actually all been living with this for the last 5 months, it’s not just teachers.

I’m still trying to understand why kids being back when cases are so low (in Scotland) is so dangerous and placing so many people at so much risk. My local area had 2 cases last week out of a population of 177000 people. There are still suppression measures ongoing outside schools. Yet people still talk about “risk” and “danger” as if there will be large numbers of certain deaths within 5 minutes of schools opening.

I’m not saying don’t open schools. I’m saying that anyone who wants ‘normal’ does not understand that there is no ‘normal’ anymore. It’s not patronising, it’s just a fact.

Schools can open but with good measures in place, low community cases, and good contact tracing. It’s not a question of our preference, it is what will work and be safe in the year to come.

There may only be 2 cases where you are, and I’m an advocate of having levels of school measures so that in very low or zero cases in the area, the schools have less stringent measures - and going through into more stringent when and if the cases rise.

The situation can change fairly quickly so we need to respond. Some areas are doing this already I believe, like green = very few measures in school; amber (cases above a certain level) = medium measures; dark amber = stringent school measures; red = schools closed. Something like that.

Maybe I've missed something re Brexit but yes, that's a shitshow too that I didn't vote for.

Because they are already blaming teachers for something that is out of there control.

Curriculum suspended, government did it teachers fault
Schools being shut Teachers fault (see all the teachers don't want to go back bullshit threads)
Lack of work during lockdown, Policies set by SLT
Teachers not responding, ok sort of got me on that one, but SLT will have said not to respond.
Primaries not going back full time before the holidays, limits set by Government and LEA.
Exam results
Etc. etc.

so I am curious as to who they will blame if this goes wrong.

IceCreamSummer20 · 15/08/2020 19:26

@DamsonDragon But also adequant funding for schools so they can actually afford soap in the toilets, hand sanitiser, additional cleaning staff, additional or tempory hand washing stations (like other countries people LOVE to make references to) and toilets (with cleaners to clean them). Really agree with this too!

elliejjtiny · 15/08/2020 19:27

C, with the option of D for those people who want it.

Starlightstarbright1 · 15/08/2020 19:32

I don't think if it fails it will be all about schools..

Soft play are openning, I can't think of anything that isn't opening even if not back to normal..

My Ds is definately struggling and needs school.

I will belooking at the givernment.. we were told 2 weeks ago we were at the limit of what we can open and may need to close some things in order for schools to open - yet more is been opened ???

ineedaholidaynow · 15/08/2020 19:34

@Starlightstarbright1 they seem to have forgotten that line about being at our limit

@IDSNeighbour
D - We haven't done all this, put in all this effort to stay safe, only to be forced to undo it all, for reasons I cannot fathom (surely not just for the economy?)
With the numbers rising daily, above 1,000 and four schools in Scotland reporting cases, after being open in less than a week, it is clearly not safe to open schools fully yet.
