Problems with COVID figures

So the Govt are unable to provide figures for COVID infections today . A cynical person would think it is because the figures are bad.
Thoughts appreciated

Never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.

HeyMacarona · 11/08/2020 18:35

They have been published it’s 1148

manicinsomniac · 11/08/2020 18:45

1148!! Shock

That's not good. I was hoping the day of over 1000 last week was just an anomaly.

AnaadiNitya · 11/08/2020 20:10

New infections mean absolutely nothing. More testing than ever is being done do it she’s sense that more new infections are being ‘found’

The only thing that’s matters are hospital admissions are they lowest they have been and the ONS is saying there are less than 20 deaths a day.

The PHE figures are fucked. There are over estimating deaths and the process they go through to get the figures is astonishing.

I don’t think the government are hiding anything, they are just so incompetent they have no fucking clue what they are doing

I usually think they are both incompetent and hiding something Sad

New cases don't seem very cheering tbh.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/08/2020 20:53

Figures without context are pretty meaningless. If the vast majority of new cases are in areas we know are hotspots and are resulting from lots of targeting testing then that is not particularly concerning. If they are spread out throughout the country it is more suggestive of a general uptick. Personally I think the former is more likely but the localised dats hasn't been released yet.

jasjas1973 · 11/08/2020 20:58

Funny that just as the Govt was getting a kicking for the highest death rates in Europe, if not the world, Matt Hancock comes out questioning PHE figures and orders a review........ 3 weeks later and the silence on this is deafening.

...and we are not doing more testing than ever, still under 100k per day and sometimes around 70k plus we have no idea if these are tests done or on x number of individuals, many people get tested more than once.

I want to know how many new people are getting tested.

ONS estimate around 30k new infections per week and rising.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/08/2020 21:01

PHE are definitely now overstating the figures. The total number of overall deaths is unlikely to alter significantly but the daily figures are out by a significant margin.

HeyMacarona · 11/08/2020 21:06

Tests were 164,061

Bombergirl · 11/08/2020 21:15

Cases are rising at a far higher rate than tests.

I keep hearing it’s because of more testing but that’s not the case.

Look here and compare the last week’s tests graph to cases one.

This is definitely possible.

How do you over state a death?

The urgent enquiry order by Hancock into how PHE have recorded CV deaths has just vanished into thin air.

If anyone reads into that Govt link you will find this...

This is a count of test results and may include multiple tests for an individual person. It includes all types of testing (swab testing for antigens, antibody testing and surveillance testing)

They don't tell us the numbers of individual people tested.

Redolent · 11/08/2020 22:15

“Don’t forget, we have more cases than anybody in the world. But why? Because we do more testing,” Trump said. “When you test, you have a case. When you test, you find something is wrong with people. If we didn’t do any testing, we would have very few cases. They [the media] don’t want to write that.”

Guess who? Trump or a random mumsnetter?

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/08/2020 22:31

Due to recording anyone who dies who ever had a positive Covid test result as a Covid death, regardless of the actual cause of death.

There's good analysis of this on the stats thread. As I said, overall figures are unlikely to reduce significantly but the daily figures are skewed at the moment and have been for a few weeks.

ONS is reporting that around 60% of Covid related deaths are taking place in hospital. Today there were 6 Covid related deaths in hospitals in England. Today's overall figure for Covid related deaths is 106 deaths. That doesn't make sense because the PHE figures for Covid related deaths in the community are not correct.

Jaxhog · 11/08/2020 22:33

I don’t think the government are hiding anything, they are just so incompetent they have no fucking clue what they are doing

Well, actually, it's the PHE who are incompetent.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/08/2020 22:35

And the review hasn't completely disappeared although it does seem to be taking its time to publish its findings

Jaxhog · 11/08/2020 22:35

They don't tell us the numbers of individual people tested.

And do you think other counties' figures are any better?

Because by the PHS method if you’ve ever had COVID you never recover from it. They just collect the data of who has had it and keep checking to see to see if they are dead. That death goes down as a COVID death.

Regardless if you have terminal cancer

Regardless if you recovered and then a month later got hit by a bus

It’s a dreadful method.

Yes they are. But you’d think some one in the Gov would have looked closely at how this evidence was being collected.

There are so many failings and the people at the top need to start taking responsibility, that’s what they are there for. And they can start by looking at what the hell is happening in care homes. Because a lot of elderly people are being left with out proper treatment for non life threading illnesses and COVID being put on their death certificate dispute their families robustly disagreeing.

It’s an absolute shit show now

I can’t believe they are still allowing it to run tbh. And this is what is making me so frustrated and annoyed. You’ve got Boris on tv painting a fucking wall on the news and two minutes later false information being given out about the stats - all on the news. It’s appalling
Gingerfish91 · 11/08/2020 22:55

It’s new infections. Admissions to hospital are still falling as is the death rate.
