Hoping everyone remembers at the ballot box

I really hope we all remember the shit show this bunch have made.

They give zero fucks for us and our loved ones.

NHS workers have been treated with contempt.

Teachers now seem to be new potential cannon fodder along with family members of young people.

Let's hope we all remember. Never voted Tory in my life btw and certainly won't now.

@toohotz

First death in the uk was on 5th March, isolation and social distancing measures should have been put in place back in February, masks should have been mandatory back then.

Really? I mean I have no issue with wearing a mask & do but some don't even want to wear one now with thousands dead. How would you have enforced the mask wearing in Feb?

That's the problem you can't. We personally as well as the government are responsible for the shitshow this has been. We don't want to do what's best for society because on the whole we are too selfish. So long as we are ok then it doesn't matter
toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:13

@confusedandold

You said

Anyway, I'm bailing out now.

and now your back.

You said

Lastly, you are talking about lockdown from the perspective of someone living in the city so you ARE talking from a limited perspective.

and now you said

I'm not saying that what is going on in London is a limited perspective

I'm not the one twisting what you said You need to try harder.

Sakura7 · 01/08/2020 10:16

People who say "a different government/Labour couldn't have done any better" are completely ignoring the fact that just about every government in Europe has done better. Much better. The UK carried on as normal for almost two full weeks after everyone else, and only introduced restrictions at the end of March. That decision has cost thousands of lives.

The Tories weren't unlucky, they were incompetent.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:16

There are also 57 million people outside of London whose perspective on the lead up to the lockdown would be very different from people living or working in the City

There are 51 cities in England.

Yes I do think people see things in countries like China & ignore them but once it hit Europe things were different. Therefore I don't think many did take it so seriously in Feb, is that really an outrageous suggestion?

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:20

That's the problem you can't. We personally as well as the government are responsible for the shitshow this has been.

Exactly. Yes there are many things we could have done on paper that would have saved lives but in reality? I don't understand why there is such a conflation of the two.

Sakura7 · 01/08/2020 10:23

See I'm just not sure how lockdown could have happened that early. Yes on paper it may well have been best thing to do but in reality I think the public were just not scared enough at that time.

The public just got on with it in other countries, as it was obviously for the greater good. Here in Ireland restrictions started on 12th March. We were watching in horror as the UK allowed major concerts, Cheltenham and football matches (including thousands of Spanish fans travelling to Liverpool) to go ahead.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:25

@Sakura7 what restrictions in the UK are you referring to?

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:26

I believe the government advised on the 16/03 to work from home & avoid pubs & restaurants?

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:28

I have no idea why Cheltenham went ahead but no one forced the public to attend & I think the premier league was suspended from 13/03

Sakura7 · 01/08/2020 10:31

@toohotz Lockdown. I didn't use that word because there's always been some debate about how appropriate it is, but essentially the day that Boris finally announced definitive action, closing schools, banning mass gatherings, etc.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:33

schools closed before lockdown.

Sakura7 · 01/08/2020 10:34

The Premier League (and many other events) shut down of its own accord well before the govt announced lockdown, because they could see it wasn't safe.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:35

And I'm pretty sure once attendance has been submitted figures will be much lower than usual for that week in March.

Sakura7 · 01/08/2020 10:36

Schools closed on 20th March, some time after most of Europe.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 10:38

@Sakura7 I know that so what day was lockdown?

Lockdown. I didn't use that word because there's always been some debate about how appropriate it is, but essentially the day that Boris finally announced definitive action, closing schools, banning mass gatherings, etc.

This was your post, I assumed you were talking about one day that all this happened, I was under the impression it happened on different days?

Oblomov20 · 01/08/2020 10:39

I'm not particularly political.
Tories? Brexit, disgraceful decimation of NHS. DLA to PIP. Now Corona.

But do I honestly believe Labour, or any other party would have done better?

Nope.

lovelyupnorth · 01/08/2020 10:40

@FAQs

Pandemic has been number 1 threat to the UK for at least ten years. So much the government has done over the last 3-4 years to make our response so shit

  1. Pull most civil servants of pandemic planning to plan for their other shit show

2 ignored results from operation cygnuss

3 reduced ppe stockpile by millions but also not kept up with the stock they have being in date.

4 the constant lying about everything

5 constantly putting out mixed messages then ignoring there own rules and making them up as the go along.

6 lying about ppe purchase.

7 blame game

8 politically motivated changes to the response far more about saving their face on other projects rather than public health

But when you will you cabinet with incompetence and yes men you’ve got no hope. One goof thing is at least we haven’t got a massive second shock coming round the corner. Oh wait.

lovelyupnorth · 01/08/2020 10:41

Don’t forget they’re lining up the NHS to be sold cheaply to the US insurance industry.

Baaaahhhhh · 01/08/2020 10:42

First death in the uk was on 5th March, isolation and social distancing measures should have been put in place back in February, masks should have been mandatory back then

This old troupe keeps being trotted out. No other European country did anything back in February. Do you really think that anyone in this country would have accepted SD and masks back then?

DamsonDragon · 01/08/2020 10:42

@Parker231

There really isn’t any benefit in discussing what Corbyn would have done - he is no longer the Labour leader. The Labour Party is in a much better place with Starmer who has already demonstrated that he can run rings around Johnson at pmq’s.
Absolutely. The only thing that gives me faith in parliament is watching Starmer absolutely destroy Johnson at PMQs using logic, facts and figures. Dont understand how anyone could watch PMQs see how clueless and lying Johnson actually is and still think he's fit to be PM.
commentatorz · 01/08/2020 10:42

Apart from bending the knee, I haven't heard r seen anything considerably different from Keir Starmer

Parker231 · 01/08/2020 10:44

@commentatorz - listen to pmq’s. It’s hugely entertaining listening to Johnson struggle against the cleverer and more articulate Starmer.

commentatorz · 01/08/2020 10:45

I've listened to PMQs and just disagree with you... it's easy to sit in opposition and criticise, and Starmer has the charisma or a third rate solicitor

Wtfdoipick · 01/08/2020 10:48

This old troupe keeps being trotted out. No other European country did anything back in February. Do you really think that anyone in this country would have accepted SD and masks back then?

No I don't think anyone would have bothered, it's what should have happened but isn't what would have happened. Even now people can't be bothered to follow the rules, so many people believe they are a unique exception and 1 exception won't matter. The government handled everything badly but quite honestly I don't think we've helped ourselves either and deserve as much criticism

Sakura7 · 01/08/2020 10:48

@toohotz Fine, they were two separate announcements (I didn't remember that off the top of my head given that it was more than 4 months ago) but essentially they happened at the same time. Monday 23rd March was the first school day that the restrictions took effect, it was also the same day that Boris made his big public address. You can be pedantic about minor details but it doesn't change the bigger picture. Can you seriously look at the data and deduce that the UK has done as well as other countries, even Italy and Spain?

@confusedandold Totally agree.
