I’ve just driven down a road where the local community are celebrating Eid, going into each other’s houses, one terraced house looked like it had 50 people in. My couldn’t how many they could fit in a small area. Are people mumsnet celebrating Eid at the moment?

@Redolent that’s BS. Why did the schools close again? Indoor schools? Did I miss something!

redbigbananafeet · 01/08/2020 14:32

@Alex50

The road was so busy and blocked with so many people, I had time to look. It wasn’t me that saw most of it, it was my daughter, she was shocked as we haven’t that many people in ages, you couldn’t move for the crowds. It’s rubbish it was cancelled so late, I agree, so we’re holidays to Spain. Do you have family from abroad visiting for Eid?
Why are you taking 'time to look'? Stop staring in peoples houses and doing head counts.

Meanwhile, same police force was giving fines to people for not going to their nearest supermarket and for buying what they felt were non essential items.

AFAIK there is nothing in law to say you have to go to your nearest supermarket, nor anything about what is or isn't a non essential item. Do you have links to info on the numbers of people fined for these things?

That's utterly appalling @ladyofthemanners

There is in general so much disrepsct for people now a days. Such selfish behaviour

Like my neigbbours who have loud conversations at 7am in the morning with their back door open or on video calls in the garden...so fed up of hearing about their life its utterly boring 😴 so I'm toying with the idea of not being so considerate myself with the music streams I've been listening to on low volume cos I wouldnt want to be that neighbour that plays loud music but grrrrrr they are pushing my buttons for sure

[quote Alex50]This is near me, you could hardly get down the road as there were so many people.

Interesting choice of footage. Was the only eid celebration footage available in the uk press that which shows celebrations 'descending into violence'?

I’ve seen awful racist attitudes on social media from the same people who clapped for the NHS but conveniently forget the NHS would be incredibly different without the BAME members of staff who are its backbone

But this type of NHS misinformation doesn't help race relations either.

The vast majority of people who work in the NHS are not BAME, and to be constantly told they are and that the NHS would collapse without them fuels even more division

It is placing the BAME demographic as all being heroic martyrs for the greater good and all non BAMEs as ungrateful oiks in need of enlightenment

I do think all NHS workers, of whatever background, have been great and worked hard throughout the crisis though and I fully support an NHS. Just for the record

Bananabread8 · 01/08/2020 15:58

@Flaxmeadow I don’t think the NHS are saying they are more BAME workers. They have made up a term that BAME people are at more risk than non BAME NHS workers it’s a complete lie. It just so happens that a lot of ethnic NHS workers died from the COVID. What race are a lot of surgeons? I see a lot of Ethnic surgeons now this doesn’t necessarily mean that BAME are at more risk. The government have given a lot of false information what use is saying how many Ethnic people have died but they haven’t compared this to White medical staff? The term BAME even annoys me it just something that has been created... then when a vaccine is produced the government will want to offer it to the BAME people first as apparently we are in “Greater need”. I will not be having any newly vaccine on the market..

There’s no way I’d cancel Christmas if we were given the same last minute ‘cancellation’ orders. I’d be careful for the following 2 weeks though. Christmas and Eid and all the other religions celebrations are important to people and you might not agree with people going ahead with them but you shouldn’t judge

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves · 01/08/2020 16:25

To be clear, only 55.6% of NHS staff medical staff are white. This is NOT the 'vast majority'.

It seems to be that becoming a doctor is more valued among certain cultures as a career path. I wouldn't call this noble or some sort of sacrifice. Doctors are very well paid. And it's really quite unlikely that there's a significant difference in risk of death from covid between ethnicities.

Flaxmeadow · 01/08/2020 16:53

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves
This is from the GovUK website

  1. Main facts and figures
as at March 2019, over 1.2 million people were employed by the NHS of NHS staff whose ethnicity was known, 4 out of 5 (79.2%) were White (including White ethnic minorities), and 1 in 5 (20.7%) were from all other ethnic groups

@LadyofTheManners

That doesn't sound true.
I do know that muslims tend to get togther during Ramadan so yeh if they were doing that it's not on but I dont believe what you said about the police sorry

Are you kidding me?
Why do you think politicians are actively voicing the cause of the additional and continued spread is within the BAME community?
We know the police are inept when it comes to some factions of that joint community. It's why Tommy Ten Names has been able to spread the sort of one sided shite he does because they sat back and ignored warnings about the Rotherham cases?
They're not given backing when they do act and someone screams racism. So they just don't.
Trust me, my area was disgraceful, they did nothing about it when it was Ramadan related. Our local ward councillor is planning on asking for a direct breakdown of how many calls led to fines by community as he has had so many reports like my street and the poor shielded woman.
