I’ve just driven down a road where the local community are celebrating Eid, going into each other’s houses, one terraced house looked like it had 50 people in. My couldn’t how many they could fit in a small area. Are people mumsnet celebrating Eid at the moment?

We celebrated by heading to a secluded beach (yes they do exist!) and having a our Eid picnic there. It was brilliant. Lots of Eid calls made to family members while out there.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/08/2020 10:15

And still no answer as to why some chose to organise huge get-togethers which were against the rules in the first place ... could it be that some peoples' outrage over the "late notice" is an attempt at deflection from their own poor choices?

And yes, although this particular thread is about Eid, that applies no matter what community's involved

Alex50 · 01/08/2020 10:16

This is near me, you could hardly get down the road as there were so many people.

Eid Mubarak!

I totally understand why people want to see family and celebrate special occasions, there are ways of doing it safely, especially in the summer.

I don't believe OP counted 50 people in a terraced house. You just sound racist.

Better to have a kind attitude towards each other, the government has much more to answer for than citizens do.

cyclingmad · 01/08/2020 10:21

Stop complaining about beaches when a study on Bournemouth beach when it was packed out has shown no increase in aes whereas studies about being indoors has!

Not that hard to comprehend.

Eid hasn't been cancelled because even if restrictions weren't in place the guidlines still limited households...problem is eid celebrations are larger numbers than current guidelines anyway and people arent adhering to them in the south either.

So blame peiple bot the government who have been saying endlessly that local restrictions will happen if cases rise.

Just have to read what these community leaders have been saying to realise the problem is people doing what they feel like then having audacity to complain

You can call it racism if you like but if large number of people are meeting inside in a small area it will spread the virus, whatever colour or religion you are. I said it looked like 50 people, it was my daughter that said it to me as she was sitting in the passengers seat.

OP posts:
Orangeblossom777 · 01/08/2020 10:37

You can't mention anything on here related to race without being called racist

I had it too when I mentioned in Sweden the gov leafleted BAME areas about social distancing. That was all I said, no comment on it being right or wrong. Then accused of being a racist...Hmm

Orangeblossom777 · 01/08/2020 10:38

And yes, contact tracing identified households meeting indoors was the cause of the recent rise in cases in Manchester hence the new specific restrictions.

IrmaFayLear · 01/08/2020 11:33

If I were in an affected community I’d rather not die of ignorance (perhaps they should resurrect the old Aids slogan....) because people were afraid it would be deemed racist to point out the dangers of multiple households gathering.

lockdownetal · 01/08/2020 11:39

It's become a way to shut people up.

Being perceived to be racist is worse than any other crime

Alex50 · 01/08/2020 11:44

I was listening to a chap the other day saying to another family member , he had a couple of family flying over from India for Eid, I bet they don’t quarantine for 14 days.

OP posts:
cyclingmad · 01/08/2020 11:54

@orangeblossom777

I agree with u but people just love to ignore facts as it doesn't validate or justify their behaviour.

Rather try to discredit it then accept maybe they are wrong

nancy75 · 01/08/2020 11:58

I’m surprised to hear all this talk of pubs being packed, I’m in London & pubs here are dead, most are reducing opening hours because it’s so quiet. Shops & shopping centres are not much busier than pubs.

Crazy as the BAM community seem to be more susceptible to Covid and then somehow it will be blamed on the Uk government
cyclingmad · 01/08/2020 12:10

Likewise Nancy I'm in South London people are adhering to distancing rules so pubs aren't packed, im just grateful im in an area where people have enough empathy to consider the wider pic and keep to guidlines so cases don't go up and we have restrictions imposed

Everyone did this wouldnt need localised lockdowns cant think of anything worse reliably than a bunch of idiots ruining it for vast majority

How can that be true? Total strangers gathering at beaches.... no sink in direct sight to wash your hands. Why don’t you wait until Eid is over to see the after math if that’s the case! I bet they make sure they wash their hands when they get inside the house.. to gather for Eid. I’d personally rather gather for Eid than at a beach. Those that are saying shops are not busy they are in some areas Zara is business as usual.
LadyofTheManners · 01/08/2020 12:17

Our street was utterly ridiculous last night
We have 6 households who were celebrating last night, no doubt again all weekend. All of them ignored lockdown during Ramadan too.
There were about 20 extra cars at each end of the road last night of non residents going to these homes.
I'm sorry but where are the police? Our neighbourhood watch reported it all during lockdown and got fobbed off every time.
Either the government don't care about the BAME community and the fact they seem to be very badly effected by the virus, or the police just really are that inept or scared to be accused of racial profiling. But personally I was disgusted by the behaviour last night, the huge bloody fireworks that sounded like pipe bombs going off until 2am was ridiculous, not to mention everyone going home with not a care or thought for the time at 4am.
The government want a race war frankly, allowing this nonsense to go ahead during local.lockdowns. I believe its so when Brexit is a shambles they can pull out the "immigration gone mad" response.

All international flights from India to the rest of the world are suspended since March.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/08/2020 12:27

@BKCRMP we had to cancel Easter!

@Dancingdeer77

Of course it is NOT racism . The local representatives of those communities have publicly acknowledged that social distancing rules were being already being ignored. Anyone can check which areas have cases that are increasing .its all households in the area that are affected . Also they are saying that it is mixing households where people do hug and kiss and share food etc that is spreading the virus and if the rules were being followed before tightening of lockdown these celebrations should NOT be happening under the rules anyway ?

We certainly will NOT be having a big family Christmas if the rates of infection are creeping up .

Alex50 · 01/08/2020 12:40

It looks like they’re opening flights up again with air bubble with India and Uk.

@bananabread8 that's because as others have said studies done show transmission is higher indoors than outdoors and one was done on people packed out on Bournemouth beach showing no rise in cases as opposed to one steet in Bradford have almost 20 plus cases because of mass family gatherings........

SusieOwl4 · 01/08/2020 12:41

@LadyofTheManners

Why cant individuals just follow the guidelines without the need for the police ? That’s the question .
