Still breaking so no exact detail on location yet but -

"Separate households will not be allowed to meet indoors in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire from midnight, the government has announced.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said an "increasing rate of transmission" had been identified in those areas."

What would be reasonable notice? Let’s say for Christmas this year?

Perhaps the lockdown at the moment was in response to seeing that people were pressing ahead with festivities. Maybe the hope was that most people would not gather and exercise caution. It seems as if community/religious leaders have been lax in not advising caution and suggesting that this year people scale down their plans.

ineedaholidaynow · 31/07/2020 09:52

Well if people carry on as they were planning to anyway I assume you will end up in a much stricter lockdown in a few weeks if the numbers rise anymore.

It’s interesting that there have been many posters on various threads proudly declaring that they have been mixing households for ages, they have done their own risk assessments and it doesn’t impact anyone else. But this shows it can.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 09:53

@Leflic , I'm a fucking prepper. I've got Plan B, C, D, E, F etc etc. I'm so fucking compliant with lockdown rules it would make you twitch. But I know that treating massive population area with utter contempt is stupid.

Thesearmsofmine · 31/07/2020 09:53

I know @bellinisurge I don’t blame people for celebrating as planned, I think it has been handled terribly. I also think our local MP has done a terrible job, in the last election we went from a labour MP who worked closely with the Muslim community for years to a Tory MP who seems to have little interest.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 09:53

"It seems as if community/religious leaders have been lax in not advising caution and suggesting that this year people scale down their plans."
They've been doing exactly this already.

wowfudge · 31/07/2020 09:54

Can you imagine if this lockdown had been announced after Eid? The consequences, both in infection rates and blaming Muslim communities for it by racist twats don't bear thinking about.

Honestly, I think you have to be pretty dim to think any mass gatherings and family celebrations will be able to go ahead this year.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 09:56

@wowfudge , tell that to my non-Muslim neighbours and their non stop partying for weeks. Or the knobs on my local FB pages who think masks are political oppression. Because my Muslim near neighbours have been sticking to the rules more consistently from what I've seen.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 31/07/2020 09:58

Looking at the data for Bradford, and it seems that the cases have been slowly increasing over the last few weeks, and it was already a fairly high level. I'm surprised that they didn't bring in measures earlier tbh. Kirklees has been steadily decreasing though. For most areas, it doesn't look like there is a particularly alarming sudden increase that demanded immediate action (unless they ar egoing by different data than we have). Trafford and Oldham look like the most dramatic increase recently.

The other option for why is was so suddenly introduced is incompetence. I could easily imagine that it was only thought quite late that it was Eid, and with the generally high rates in areas like Bradford, they got worried and made a quick decision.

Sorry to people who have had plans thrown out. It sucks.

Leflic · 31/07/2020 10:00

Leflic "these areas "😂😂😂
The most non compliance I've seen is from my ex-squadie non-Muslim neighbours and their non-stop partying with loads of guests. For several weeks
The number of cases are too high in “some areas”.

Every person in the country knows how to reduce the risk of catching and spreading it. Doesn’t matter if you are white having a drunken party or Muslim celebrating Eid.

Non compliance to social distancing and other measures pushes up the transmission rate.

Perro · 31/07/2020 10:00

For those using this thread to promote Islamophobia, a spokeperson for Trafford borough (sorry not sure if she was a GP or councillor) said last night that the biggest rise in that area has been in professional, middle class family households.
So whilst there are clearly some issues in areas with high Asian populations, the problem is by no means restricted to those areas or cultural groups.
If there was to be a spike in cases in 90% of boroughs in Greater Manchester just before Christmas, lockdown measures would be equally appropriate.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 10:02

I agree. Some Downing Street twat thought "ooo, it's Eid. Shit. Better say something. Upside is that we can subtly blame Northern communities for it And still expect them to go to work"

wowfudge · 31/07/2020 10:02

@bellinisurge - unfortunately there are always people who think the rules don't apply to them and you can't argue with stupid. It will take them catching it before they rethink their behaviour.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 10:03

Perro - would they have done it at 10 o'clock on Christmas Eve, though?

wowfudge · 31/07/2020 10:07

By 10pm on Christmas Eve it would be too late for many families. I'd rather be told to lockdown however short the notice than have celebrations go ahead and infection rates rise.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 31/07/2020 10:08

Better now than after Eid considering what a racist shitstorm would happen blaming massive spike on the celebration....@TuckMyWin

MRex · 31/07/2020 10:09

"I don't like how the communication was given, so although I understand from the communication that cases are really high and rising I'll risk infecting my frail grandma."
Really, that's how some of you behave around risk? Ok then.

Leflic · 31/07/2020 10:12

@bellinisurge

Perro - would they have done it at 10 o'clock on Christmas Eve, though?
Christmas is a national holiday for everyone including Muslims and those with no religion. So I think they would have a longer lead time.

There are lots of professional, middle class people of Asian origin in Trafford, you know.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 10:18

Again, I'm a prepper so being prepared for an emergency change of plan at short notice is kinda my thing. It's not EVERYONE'S thing.

Leflic · 31/07/2020 10:18

@wowfudge

So if it was Christmas today, you’d be doing it the way you always do?

I doubt it very much. The shopping is different, friends and family at risk wouldn’t be dropping in and personally I’d be Zooming and having a small one at home. And I live somewhere with hardly any cases.

southeastdweller · 31/07/2020 10:19

There’s no Islamophobia here and it’s insulting to say there is. Unless @Perro doesn’t understand the definition of that word?

bellinisurge · 31/07/2020 10:25

Picture the scene: your kids went to bed last night expecting a little family party this morning - seeing grandparents they haven't seen for ages. And then you hear this shit late at night and gave to tell them this morning it's all off.
Is it ok to treat people like this?

Cherryghost · 31/07/2020 10:28

It does seem very odd the quick lockdown compared to Leicester being talked about for a week before being locked down

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/07/2020 10:36

I don’t know what they’ll do if cases increase, but increase they will. They will almost certainly close places of worship etc at least

Not sure how that'll work considering some places of worship - along with non essential shops, cafes, funerals, etc - ignored lockdown in the first place
Not sure either what difference it would have made if the message had been delivered well in advance. Granted money might have been saved, but if folk are determined not to comply they'd have gone ahead anyway, even though it was obviously unwise for celebrations to go ahead as normal with the numbers as they are

What do you think the government to do with these areas? Ignore the steadily increasing numbers? Then what?

I asked this last night and of course there's been no answer, so what'll happen if and when numbers go through the roof is anyone's guess. Either way I worry that it won't do a whole lot of good to community relations

Turin · 31/07/2020 10:41

I’m Muslim and a single parent. Was mid way Eid peeps for parents small bbq today. I could just cry. Everything’s been cancelled.
