A bit concerned about Cornwall

I have been following the new confirmed cases figures for Cornwall closely as I have family down there, and over the last few days there has been a noticeable uptick in the figures, compared with a few weeks ago when the rise each day/week was negligible.

I know the tourism industry down there is crying out for business, and they don't want a complete lost summer, so I have no problem with people going there on holiday per se. I just wish people would engage their brains when they are on holiday. My cousin told me he went to the shops just after the mandatory masks ruling was brought in and he reckoned there was about 25% compliance. Also I have been hearing ridiculous accounts of people saying things like "we came down here to get away from all that social distancing" or "it's okay, there's no virus down here". Do people really think Cornwall is some virus-free utopia? God help Cornwall, is all I can say.

Well I live in Cornwall and can confirm that mask wearing in shops is at about 99%. Not 25%, that would be crazy.

Still bricking it about the tourists though, it's getting increasingly impossible to distance safely when popping to the shops. August is going to be hell.

Where are you getting your figures from about the uptick in cases? I'd like to see. Thanks!

ohthegoats · 27/07/2020 16:36

I've been down, it was fine. Should be concerned about anywhere 'nice' that people escape to in the summer, but mask wearing and SD will help.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 27/07/2020 16:38

Not long back from cornwall also have family there and most places people were being sensible ( always a few that dont ) pubs / restaurants take details etc , if your family is right and only 25 % of people are wearing masks that would be locals too as not 75% of tourists there
Also would be interested in figures you have seen and if an increase ?

NewNewt · 27/07/2020 16:42

Interestingly, my sister is just back from a week in Cornwall and said she was very surprised to see how most of the locals weren't wearing masks (St Ives). They wore masks everywhere and said most of the people in shops and cafes found it amusing, along the lines of you and your London ways. They asked for extra hand sanitiser in a restaurant and were snapped at. So it works both ways, idiots everywhere. She said about they were virtually the only people wearing masks anywhere they went.

NewNewt · 27/07/2020 16:43

this was the week before they were mandatory (as they should have been since March)

wentawaycameback · 27/07/2020 16:44

I live in Cornwall and agree 99% uptake on masks - certainly not 25%. People are social distancing but places are increasingly busy. Pubs, cafes, shops etc all working very hard to keep people safe. Went out to a popular tourist spot today and it was busy, people in masks but not everything has opened and will probably not reopen (sadly probably never). To be honest I think you are just scaremongering.

Chill08 · 27/07/2020 16:44

Unfortunately i've heard exactly the same things from people on holiday down here! "It's safe, you don't have the virus down here". It is very very busy, i popped to my local town last week and won't be back until it has calmed down. No one was social distancing, not many people in masks, everywhere packed and don't get me started on the litter! Come here have a lovely holiday but have a thought for people who actually live here.

ElizabethMainwaring · 27/07/2020 16:48

This is all so worryingly.
And just in time for the return to school.
Bloody joke.

Mumsie007 · 27/07/2020 16:50

We are expecting a second wave and a third here. I think cases here have trippled in the last week and imagine we are very likely to be locked down again in time. There is no space for social distancing in our town as its so full so we will just avoid it and leave it for the tourists to enjoy, it is as rammed as it ever is in July and driving anywhere on a saturday takes forever. The litter is mad, very sad, but thats the case every year.

DivisionBelles · 27/07/2020 16:51

I'm in Cornwall and in a popular holiday spot. Mask wearing is definitely nearer 90% than 25%!

Port1aCastis · 27/07/2020 16:52

I live on the Lizard and yes most people are wearing masks not sure where those figures are from OP as they don't seem right.

DivisionBelles · 27/07/2020 17:01

I've just checked .gov for the latest figures in Cornwall and yes cases have gone up, but only ever so slightly. The 7 day average up to 26th July is 2.3. Given that there are thousands of extra people here now, that doesn't seem excessive. In comparison, at the beginning of May at the height of lockdown, the 7 day average was nearer to 16 per week.

DivisionBelles · 27/07/2020 17:02

16 per day, not per week.

exiledfromcornwall · 27/07/2020 17:22

Well, admittedly the increase is nothing like in the league of Leicester, say, but it does seem to have coincided with the reopening of the tourism industry. 12 new cases in the last couple of days, whereas 2-3 weeks ago it was 1 or 2 per day, or some days none. Don't mean to be scaremongering, but my feelings about certain people's attitudes still stand.

OP posts:
ohthegoats · 27/07/2020 17:28

But that's what opening up after lockdown will do. There is no escaping that anywhere/everywhere. That's viruses.

AccountAntsy · 27/07/2020 17:33

What are the actual numbers involved though? I have seen dramatic news articles where I live (not Cornwall) about “rates doubling!” and then it’s turned out to be from 2 to 4 cases.

Veganfortheanimals · 27/07/2020 17:38

I was down there last week ,I’m going again next week ..it’s fine ,,masks were on before Friday,we wore them ..people were socially distancing .

Port1aCastis · 27/07/2020 17:39

I found this item in the Packet but it is a newspaper article so may not not be gospel. 10 cases over the weekend apparently

soundsgreektome · 27/07/2020 17:50

I’ve been back from Cornwall a week, the younger locals weren’t social distancing, big groups stood together outside two pubs, dancing and hugging each other. The older locals were a bit more. Although, there was two older locals mouthing off to tourists in St Ives about tourists not keeping to the walk one way rule n the streets - this was very difficult for the tourists as the locals were stood in the middle of the path abusing the tourists!!! The holiday makers seemed to be very good at doing the right thing. To be fair.

Port1aCastis · 27/07/2020 17:52

My young local definitely social distances and wears a mask except when she's on duty with the RNLI.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 27/07/2020 17:56

Op are you from Cornwall ? As you seem to be blaming tourists more for not complying but when i was down a majority were sensible a small majority were not but this included locals as well as tourists
I spoke to several shop/ restaurant owners who said most were happy to welcome tourists as they need them just obviously prefer the sensible ones

cologne4711 · 27/07/2020 17:56

I was in Devon two weeks ago to visit my mother and it was busy and people had definitely forgotten about social distancing. I don't think they were all tourists by any means, but sunshine plus pretty town = no virus. I've just been into my local town centre and everyone I saw in a shop was wearing a mask.

Is there really a walk one way rule in St Ives? I wish they'd bring that in everywhere! Left hand side, left hand pavement, single file where possible. It would be good generally, not just because of covid.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 27/07/2020 17:57

@Port1aCastis there were def local teenagers about that weren't in places i went to , but the same as anywhere , the majority conform but you will always have a minority that don't

wentawaycameback · 27/07/2020 18:03

My young local also social distances and wears a mask. I hope this thread isn't an excuse for 'people bashing' whether locals or tourists. It does seem to be going that way. Also The Falmouth Packet is possibly not the most reliable source. However I have accidentally wandered into the Coronavirus forum so will gracefully withdraw.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/07/2020 18:03

I live in Cornwall and agree with everything Chilli08 said above.

Some tourists (not all) do have the idea that there is no virus here- "I came down here to get away from all that" definitely heard, and everywhere is so crowded. We have a one way system for pedestrians in our small town and it's not being followed, but one of the issues is that the arrows are painted on the pavement and when there are so many people you can't see them.

I shall be staying at home and shopping online until Autumn.
