A bit concerned about Cornwall

I have been following the new confirmed cases figures for Cornwall closely as I have family down there, and over the last few days there has been a noticeable uptick in the figures, compared with a few weeks ago when the rise each day/week was negligible.

I know the tourism industry down there is crying out for business, and they don't want a complete lost summer, so I have no problem with people going there on holiday per se. I just wish people would engage their brains when they are on holiday. My cousin told me he went to the shops just after the mandatory masks ruling was brought in and he reckoned there was about 25% compliance. Also I have been hearing ridiculous accounts of people saying things like "we came down here to get away from all that social distancing" or "it's okay, there's no virus down here". Do people really think Cornwall is some virus-free utopia? God help Cornwall, is all I can say.

On average cases in the Uk have risen past May figures. Sounds like Cornwall is below average

CountessFrog · 01/08/2020 15:52

More hysteria

SheepandCow · 01/08/2020 17:00

Lots of people live in places with busy (often narrow) streets 365 days a year.

I was particularly struck by the holiday lets woman. Why take bookings (and tourist money) if you don't want people coming? Confused

SheepandCow · 01/08/2020 17:02

Sorry I didn't link. The holiday let woman was quoted in one of the many news articles about the Cornish 'welcome'. She was complaining about too many tourists. She manages holiday lets...

onlinelinda · 01/08/2020 17:09

I think it isn't always the number of visitors but the behaviour of visitors. People sometimes have no care about social distancing, or the implications for themselves or others.

CountessFrog · 01/08/2020 17:36

Then stay away from them.

I’m about to stay in the centre of a very crowded seaside resort.

It’s really not hard to stay away from people outdoors.

exiledfromcornwall · 01/08/2020 18:00

Exactly. What I said was not scaremongering, THIS is scaremongering.

YANBU. I have friends who have just got back from cornwall and they basically kept to themselves except for walks, didn't go to any shops at all and just enjoyed a change of scene but being even more careful than at home.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2020 00:02

@Ethelfleda

Why are people worried about busy streets? It is virtually impossible to catch coronavirus outdoors

This. The chances of passing on Covid by simply walking past someone are minute. I think people are way over the top.

.... Wrong - depends on the activity type and maybe the temperature

BLM marches, beaches, VE day didn't spike infections

However, in Germany, outdoor carnivals and fetes were epicentres of Coronavirus infections

  • those areas with carnivals were hit especially hard in the early days
BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2020 00:03

Just walking by someone ..... almost zero risk
Depends whether you stay within 2m of them for a prolonged period
and especially if you are shouting, singing etc

Cornishclio · 02/08/2020 00:14

I live in Cornwall and yes there are more people but most if not all are wearing masks and social distancing. The towns are busy I expect though as are the beaches. People need to use their common sense and move on if it is busy. There is plenty of space but sadly people seem to congregate in same busy spaces.

Ethelfleda · 02/08/2020 07:35

Bigchoc
You’ve confused me by both agreeing with and disagreeing with my statement

Boldly proclaiming ‘WRONG’ at my comment... and then going on to agree with it Confused

Carnivals may well have been epicentres but that doesn’t prove that simply ‘walking past’ other people at these events is what caused the spread. Possibly far mare likely that the spread would have been down to touching many of the same surfaces etc
A carnival isn’t the same as a street in Cornwall!

BTW for anyone wondering what it's actually like in Cornwall as opposed to what the media are telling us, here is a link to a website with some great live streaming webcams. The St Ives Harbour one is my personal favourite:
