A bit concerned about Cornwall

I have been following the new confirmed cases figures for Cornwall closely as I have family down there, and over the last few days there has been a noticeable uptick in the figures, compared with a few weeks ago when the rise each day/week was negligible.

I know the tourism industry down there is crying out for business, and they don't want a complete lost summer, so I have no problem with people going there on holiday per se. I just wish people would engage their brains when they are on holiday. My cousin told me he went to the shops just after the mandatory masks ruling was brought in and he reckoned there was about 25% compliance. Also I have been hearing ridiculous accounts of people saying things like "we came down here to get away from all that social distancing" or "it's okay, there's no virus down here". Do people really think Cornwall is some virus-free utopia? God help Cornwall, is all I can say.

Nadia Sawalha from Loose Women is currently facing backlash from having just come back from a weeks holiday to Cornwall where she took her kids friends and mother in law who doesn't live with them along, all sharing the same accommodation and car. 🙄

I don't think the data is concerning at all, and is certainly nothing even close to a local lockdown situation. The data is available on the gov website, so there's really no need to base an opinion off inflammatory and false social media posts!

In the latest 7 day complete period, there have been 19 positive cases, yes that's higher than some weeks, but quite a bit lower than the vast majority of other counties.

For context, in the second week of April when there had been no tourists for 2-3 weeks, and only hospital inpatients were being tested, there were c120 positive cases.

The time to worry will be when locals return from their Spanish holidays.

jimmyhill · 27/07/2020 18:18

No the time to worry will be three weeks after Easter. No, VE day. No, Father's Day.

The second wave is coming people

Notfeelinggreattoday · 27/07/2020 18:48

@earthyfire you can share accomadation with one other family as far as i know ? Cars are iffy doesn't seem to be much guidelines but you can get in a cab or on public transport with others with masks on so maybe they did the same ?

TheoneandObi · 27/07/2020 19:05

It's quite hard to social distance in some places. I was in my local village the other day with my elderly parents and the quayside was like Oxford St at Xmas. That said, just before the school holidays started and the crowds really swelled, it was the locals in the pubs who were making my teeth gnash. Hugging selfies all over social media grrrr.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 27/07/2020 19:07

It’s virtually impossible to catch coronavirus outdoors.

@Port1aCastis hello fellow Lizardy person!

Port1aCastis · 27/07/2020 19:12

Hi The one and Obi how are you my lovely? Not often I meet a fellow Lizard on here

IKEA888 · 27/07/2020 19:15

It's happen ing everywhere because lockdown is eased. It's expected and has to happen really.

TheoneandObi · 27/07/2020 19:15

@Port1aCastis we only come out to bask on warm granite or serpentine when the sun shines!

Port1aCastis · 27/07/2020 19:18

Grin @TheoneandObi been too damp for that today though.

frumpety · 27/07/2020 19:19

Does anyone know if the little bus service is running from the carpark at the top of the hill near the leisure centre in St Ives ?

We are coming down hopefully at the end of August, we have got masks and if I have to sit in the cottage, read and drink wine for two weeks, whilst listening to the sea, I will be happy and yellow Smile

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 27/07/2020 19:19

This is Cornwall for you. Moan moan moan, take your money with one hand, two fingers with the other.

TheoneandObi · 27/07/2020 19:21

@frumpety I don't know if it is but that hill at least allows you to walk off your pasty and ice cream!
The trains from Lelant park and ride are running and are always my route into the town as a local.
I loathe driving and irking in st ives!

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 27/07/2020 19:22

This!!
TheoneandObi · 27/07/2020 19:23

@iamusuallybeingunreasonable there has been a lot of that sort of behavior. Personally I think people deserve a holiday. I don't mind sharing my beaches for 6 weeks of the year, and in any case know there are plenty that tourists don't find

frumpety · 27/07/2020 19:30

Thanks for that @TheoneandObi, won't have a cat in hells getting into Island in August so have bought a weekly ticket for the top of the hill ! Would love to know how to get one of those empty spaces next to Porthwidgeon beach, there always seems to be loads empty even in August ! Don't mind the walk myself, usually drive down and dump everyone and everything in the carpark behind the Sloop and then drive back up, gives me a half an hour 'on my own' time meandering back down Wink

ScrapThatThen · 27/07/2020 19:31

We're here. Have been to a few paid outdoor places, where there were queues some of us chose to wear masks. Holiday park is well organised and welcoming. Supermarket was fairly empty, no problems distancing. I'm staying away from pubs and restaurants for a bit longer. But I have two general non Cornwall observations

  1. We lack any common sense in our individual decision making, I cannot believe some of the choices family are making. And they feel the same about me.
  2. Collective actions we are forced to take can slow and control this thing, but blaming individuals is naive and somewhat unfair. Because of point one, we are all idiots.

Family from Cornwall and live there, moved away as impossible to work/but a house, so we take our kids back to see them and they think we don't hear them slagging us off under hushed tones or sarcasm.

This virus isn't simply coming in with the "emmets", it's coming in with the locals as well, and the county simply cannot survive without the summer season

TheoneandObi · 27/07/2020 19:44

@iamusuallybeingunreasonable I hate that term 'emmet' I really do.
It's vile.

Jojobythesea · 27/07/2020 19:50

This is so true.

This is why I'm dreading visiting, we've had our break booked for a while, we have already had a holiday abroad cancelled and my kids are so excited but absolutely dreading coming because of some hostile comments I've read (not just on here I've read some in some Facebook groups I follow too) wondering whether to just cancel.

exiledfromcornwall · 27/07/2020 20:10

Of course cases will rise with lockdown easing. All the more reason for people to be sensible. Happily it sounds as though the majority are. There will always be a few idiots.

Don't cancel, enjoy your holiday
