Will people returning from Spain actually bother with full quarantine?

In my personal opinion I think many will not. ( I know one for sure who has no plans to) How is it even monitored apart from through random spot checks? There are also many caveats such as “ you can go out for shopping, medicine, legal meetings, etc” which would make it relatively easy for people. Will the government be reliant upon the unpleasant snitching culture we seem to be fostering?

I think in terms of workplaces they will have to adhere to this because employers and fellow colleagues would not want to take the risk. With regards to shopping and daily stuff I think people will ignore it.

Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 27/07/2020 09:14

I think if people have put their holiday pics up on Facebook it makes it harder, but for those who have been quiet and discreet they may manage to avoid self isolation without drawing attention from the local jobs worths.

I think if their employer is sympathetic and they can do their jobs from home they are likely to quarantine, but if you will potentially lose your job then it's doubtful.

If you need 24 days off work for a 10 day holiday, for the time being, holidays will be the playground of the rich, which seems a little unfair.

ShanghaiDiva · 27/07/2020 09:22

My dh returned from China earlier this month and did two weeks self isolation. Nobody checked he was at home, not even a phone call. Dcs and I were allowed to leave the house as normal which also makes the whole process pointless.
Dh also did two weeks quarantine in China and that was a completely different experience: two weeks in a quarantine centre and daily checks.

FinallyRelief · 27/07/2020 09:29

I expect quarantine means you can get food from somewhere?

What does it mean to quarantine?

Splitsunrise · 27/07/2020 09:29

@Boogiewoogiebugleboy the guidance says you should not go out grocery shopping, or pick up medication, you should ask friends or relatives or order a delivery. You can’t leave your house to walk your dog etc. The exclusions are only in exceptional circumstances where you would starve otherwise or desperately need medical treatment etc etc...

‘Unpleasant snitching’
Do you mean reporting people who break the law?
Employers should not allow employees back in work until they have quarantined.

2CatsAndCounting · 27/07/2020 09:34

If anyone doesn’t then they are a selfish b***d as far as I am concerned. It was made clear the ‘air-bridges’ could be changed if cases rose in countries. Everyone was quick enough to say the government didn’t bring in quarantine rules for those returning back in March, this time they act promptly still get told off for doing wrong.

I do agree chances of people actually doing it are low but that is more a reflection of the type of selfish low life they are than anything else.

thecatneuterer · 27/07/2020 09:41

I can't see people properly sticking to it. However I think they will as far as going to work is concerned - as it will be hard not to (assuming people know they've been away).

Who is supposed to be checking on it? And how?

ArticFreeze · 27/07/2020 09:43

This country needs to take this seriously and quarantine people in hotels or somewhere where they can be fed but kept in isolation. Yes it’d be hell to be locked up in a hotel room for 14 days but a second wave needs to be avoided.

mondaynoon · 27/07/2020 09:45

I don't think people will stick to it. I know someone who is coming back from Ibiza where there are very few cases and I'm sure they won't.

thecatneuterer · 27/07/2020 09:47

Albania is a country you are supposed to quarantine when entering the UK from. Their total death toll, throughout the entire pandemic so far, has been 134. 134 compared to our nearly 5000. Yet travellers from there need to quarantine. I can understand why people wouldn't feel too guilty about breaking the rules when the rules, in cases like that, are so plainly bonkers.

MyPersona · 27/07/2020 09:47

Just heard on the news that quarantine means not going out at all, even for food and that there will be random checks on people and potentially a £1,000 fine.

Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 27/07/2020 09:48

I wonder if those taking so much time and care to log, track and report movements of friends and neighbours would be happy to swap that time to offer to pick up a few essentials for them whilst doing their shop?

Anecdotally, I know of someone who returned from a country that wasn’t exempt from the quarantine rules, didn’t bother to isolate, was visited by the police following a tip off and wasn’t fined. Absolutely no consequences. If people aren’t being fined for breaking the quarantine rules what exactly is the deterrent??

aquamarine1 · 27/07/2020 09:53

I came back from a country where there's a need to quarantine - no checks at all.

Uhoh2020 · 27/07/2020 09:54

People need to consider that they could be contacted at any time from track and trace and told to isolate, especially if they are putting themselves in a position where social distancing isn't an option ie flying or on a long train journey

It's pretty ridiculous really, one of my students is going back to China and has to spend 2 weeks in a quarantine hotel which as you can probably imagine will be Strict.

here we can just get home, dump our stuff and swan off to tesco

OTOH Spain is probably no more dangerous than England so...

pontypridd · 27/07/2020 09:58

When people in the UK are failing to wear masks and social distance, cramming into pubs, staying with family and friends - the list goes on ... Nobody is following any rules anymore because there are none.

Every single person and family has their own interpretation of what any rules that might exist might be.

Surely every person whose been in the UK is as much a risk as people coming back from Spain?

The death rate and infection rate is lower in Spain than the UK isn't it?

Delatron · 27/07/2020 10:03

I think when the rules are a bit bonkers people will struggle to understand them.

For example, if you are coming back from the Balearics where cases are very low and have been throughout this. Yet you need to isolate. More chance of picking it up on a tube in to London... Foreign Office is advising against Mainland Spain but not the islands. Yet quarantine still applies. People would be more compliant if the rules actually made sense.

jillandhersprite · 27/07/2020 10:05

Fines can't be enforced because the law has been written with a loophole. I can't remember the exact phrasing - but it relates to the legal term of 'reasonableness'.
Of course there will be some people that don't quarantine - in the same way that some people didn't fully lockdown at the start, and when the rules eased they went back to normal life.
I suspect that when the government crunches their various models they use a fairly high percentage for non-compliance. As long as the rule followers continue to do this - that will be enough.
I can't see this government suddenly changing to an authoritarian form of control and enforcing the rules as strictly as some other countries do.

WhattheHhashappened · 27/07/2020 10:10

If they arrive back in the UK from holiday and find that they have no relatives or friends nearby who can drop stuff off, their internet has been disconnected or they have lost the capacity to order food on line I’m sure others would help out.

Teacher12345 · 27/07/2020 10:14

People in this country are selfish. They won't do it and because this country allow people to break rules with no consistent consequences, they will get away with it.
I saw 2 people yesterday in Co-op without a mask. Maybe they were exempt, but it is a small store and it would be one hell of a coincidence if half the shoppers in their at the time were exempt. No one appeared to challenge them so I assume we can all just walk in making masks yet another pointless rule.

Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 27/07/2020 10:16

It feels like a farce to me. I just don’t have any confidence in the government.
