Are we headed for an autumn/winter second wave and national lockdown?

Or even before then?

I wasn’t expecting to see spikes in infection rates in Spain, France etc so quickly. Highest worldwide figures on a daily basis. I don’t understand how, with people back at work, school, indoor activities, we’re not going to have a second wave?

If someone doesn’t think we will, please explain this to me as I would LOVE to be wrong. Sad

it will be mixed in with winter flu and norovirus, the NHS is in for a bad winter

That's going to be interesting if PHE still haven't sorted out the mess where those who've ever tested positive are deemed to have died of Covid

Still, it'll give the media an opportunity for lots more doomsday headlines ...

Bit if people are being more clean etc maybe there will be less other bugs?

MarshaBradyo · 27/07/2020 11:28

Yes there might be a benefit to not only increased flu vaccine but SD and keeping away from each other more when ill.

Sweden managed absolutely fine without lockdowns. They did, and are still doing, better than us without locking down and were not overwhelmed. They are playing the longer game we will eventually join in - the one where you have to live with it.

They really haven't done fine by any reckoning.

"Look at other countries where they've tried to keep going-the death toll and toll on services caused by a pandemic brings a country to its knees. "

So, were they brought to their knees without a lockdown? Or did they manage absolutely fine? In what sense were they 'brought to their knees'? Were we brought to our knees as well then?

Karenovirus · 27/07/2020 14:43

Sweden has a low population density. It should have low deaths.

Have you ever actually BEEN to Sweden?
Most people live in big cities, which are no less densely populated than ours. Loads of flats in Stockholm.

Then you have masses of empty space where very few people live.

midgebabe · 27/07/2020 15:25

Sweeden suffered far more deaths than the closest comparable countries, their neighbours. The suffered similar or worse economic fall out than those neighbours. So they have the worst of both worlds.

xLovexstoryx · 27/07/2020 15:29

Yeah they have got more resources ready. I'm sure he said 90,000 ventilators for flu season. We currently have 30,000? So I think he's happy to let the virus spread now. It was never about us. It was about the NHS! That's all he was bothered about.

What a barrage of obtuse questions legend. I can't be assed.

Only read to page 2 but if there is a second wave I really hope it’s not in September! Let the kids get back to school and some normality before we need to drag them away again. I do worry for their mental health.

In other words, no, they weren't 'brought to their knees' by locking down and managed at least as adequately as we did, but are now not bricking it about further lockdowns and spikes (which was their reasoning in the first place when not locking down)

We messed up care homes. They messed up care homes. Our lockdown didn't proect them adequately. Their non lockdown didn't protect them adequately either
