Are we a couple of weeks behind Spain and France?

If Spain is v.likely in a second wave and France not far behind them does that mean we are also heading straight in to one again?

Will schools open regardless this September?

If masks became compulsory in schools, teens would have to wear them. Otherwise they would be sent home. They would just be part of uniform.

Any kid not complying with current COVID guidelines, or deliberately spitting or coughing, will be placed in isolation until a parent comes to collect. I guess the same would apply to masks. That’s how it’s working in my school

madcatladyforever · 26/07/2020 10:37

Despite this there is a big anti mask protest on today. It just makes me want to weep.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 26/07/2020 10:39

@DownstairsMixUp agree. This isn’t going away anytime soon, how long do they want schools closed/part time learning to go on for? It’s not realistic of sustainable.

feelingverylazytoday · 26/07/2020 10:43

@Jeremyironsnothing

If the cases are up, the deaths come about three weeks after. Those people comparing deaths at the moment to the UK, aren't comparing the real picture.
Not necessarily. The deathrate depends on a number of factors, most notably age, underlying conditions,, and it would appear, viral load. Most importantly we now have two treatments which substantially reduce deaths, one of which (dexemethasone) has already been started as standard treatment across the NHS, and the other one (interferon beta) no doubt soon will be. If we can carry on identifying clusters of infection and intervening earlier the death rate should be significantly reduced. I don't think we'll see anything like the number of deaths we saw earlier in the year.

Children need to back in September. I haven’t stopped working (in education). Yet my child has had nothing since March. Not all schools are equal.

What they need to do is close everything else if necessary. Schools should be back, the children have given up enough now.

Oaktree55 · 26/07/2020 10:51

It’s quite interesting to read about the Spanish Flu, there are letters on line from teachers re school closures, debates about opening schools over the holidays to catch up, mask wearing debates etc etc. Nothing changes. History repeats itself but unfortunately we don’t learn.

CallmeAngelina · 26/07/2020 10:52

What they need to do is close everything else if necessary.
But schools and all the associated networks are major conduits of infection. They employ and deal with many millions of people, nationwide. The earlier comparisons with pubs and people saying it is skewed priorities to open them and not schools, are missing the point. Any place where it is relatively easy to restrict transmission and continue to operate safely can open.
However much you want your child to return to school, the bottom line is that schools are NOT safe. Sorry, but they're just not. Everyone will have a different view on the balance or risk for their own family, but if /when schools reopen fully, cases WILL rise significantly.
We need to accept that.

CountessFrog · 26/07/2020 10:53

Why would we have learned? It was 102 years ago. Those people are all dead now.

My great grandmother never mentioned it when she was alive. Perhaps if she had, ‘we would have learned.’

Itisasecret · 26/07/2020 10:59

I work in a school and I feel safe. Thanks for the concern though! I am incredibly glad that we will have full classes in September.

Oaktree55 · 26/07/2020 11:02

I hope you don’t teach at my kids school, if you “feel safe”. I’d hope that most teaching staff would have the basic grounding in maths and science to at least appreciate they’re in a high risk environment. If they decide to take that risk then fine but I’d hope educators at least have the knowledge to be aware of the risks involved, particularly as aerosol transmission has gained evidence.

newphoneswhodis · 26/07/2020 11:03

Focus on our numbers. Spain has had less than 5 deaths per day for weeks. We are still in the hundreds some days last week.

Had full classes of 30+ children changing 5 times per day yet?
Itisasecret · 26/07/2020 11:04

Of course they do, however scaring parents and children away from schools is irresponsible. I feel safe at school, that is allowed. Don’t be so rude!

Jaxhog · 26/07/2020 11:08

Yes. Especially if enough people choose to ignore the guidelines.

Those who can should follow the guidelines in order to protect those who can't, due to living conditions, etc. If we don't protect the vulnerable, what kind of society are we?

sophiestew · 26/07/2020 11:09

If schools do open in September they will probably be closed again by half term.

I do think we have another blast of this to come. In my head I am picturing "new normal" from about May 2021 onwards. Sad

itsaratrap · 26/07/2020 11:10

Unfortunately, we probably are.

Oaktree55 · 26/07/2020 11:10

It’s not irresponsible, people should be aware of the facts and latest research so that they can make informed decisions. Our Government certainly aren’t volunteering it. Some teaching staff erroneously think that hand washing etc will be enough. It won’t. Any staff on the fence about returning should read up on the latest research as to how long infectious virus remains in the air and the distance aerosols spread. Unfortunately the majority of schools in the U.K. have poorly ventilated classrooms. If people are aware of the facts then decide to proceed then fine. I personally worry about all the older at risk teachers who have spent a lifetime educating who are walking into an environment which they have been misled about by our Government’s ridiculous guidelines for opening.
MorningManiacMusic · 26/07/2020 11:11

Newphone- this is what I'm not understanding!
Spain has had a "worrying increase" yet its % of new cases X million, % of deaths and everything else is still so much lower than the UK.
Yet the MN self-appointed epidemiologists have gone self-righteous warp speed on every poor fucker thinking "oh, Spain looks safer than Leicester for my holiday this year".

CountessFrog · 26/07/2020 11:11

Well said it’sasecret

Perhaps those who have decided it’s not safe in schools will opt to deregister and home educate their children. It will reduce the numbers on school.

Far better that than keeping the schools closed and forcing working parents to home educate when they cannot do so.

CarrieBlue · 26/07/2020 11:11

Pretending that schools will be safe in September is irresponsible when there has been very limited opening so far.

Presumably you have not read the questioning of how accurate Spanish data on deaths is and also the questioning of our current over reporting of Covid deaths?? It’s a pointless and meaningless comparison.
