Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:

@LesLavandes

Pertella. You have to quarantine when returning to UK from Canaries
yes, I know. The quote I was replying to said that you won't get the choice to go and quarantine on return as operator's will cancel holidays

I was asking if that includes the canary Islands too.

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 21:11

Canto. You are so right

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 21:11

fco website - exactly!! now saying islands donhave to quarantine yet a few hours ago no mention. People saying on this thread a few minutes ago definitely dont. They've changed the FCO website 3 times in the last 4 hours. Hopefully its now clear - you can go to the islands but you DO need to quarantine on return for 14 days.

Lostnameperson · 25/07/2020 21:13

Just checked FCO info is clear

It’s clear now but confusion has arisen because the page has obviously been updated more than once today saying different things. The first updated clearly said the quarantine applied to mainland Spain. A further update then included then included the islands. This has happened within the last hour.

Why would anyone have booke a foreign holiday in such uncertain times?
....
Madness. I know there's a clamor to get away but it really isn't the time.
....
I know, it's so irresponsible. As if people are going to die for lack of a holiday abroad.

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 21:14

lostnameperson exactly

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2020 21:15

Pertella, you probably have to give them a little time. This has all happened in the last couple of hours but you can bet that the high ups at Jet2 are currently discussing and working on policy.

Sadly it looks like we're back to changing by the minute/hour/day and some people who are currently on holiday or due to travel in the next few days might see plans change at very short notice, including while they're on the way to the airport or in the air Sad.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 21:17

I think the comment about the Canaries being Portuguese has to be up there as as stupid and ill informed as posters on legal threads who tell the lawyers advising posters within their field of expertise - they're wrong Grin

@Uhoh2020

Yes, an absolute nightmare and grey area of nothingness

KitKat1985 · 25/07/2020 21:18

This government is a shit show. At 8pm it said foreign office advised against travel to mainland Spain, and would require quarantine on return, but Canaries and Balearics were exempt. By 9pm it said foreign office advised against travel to mainland Spain, but quarantine on return would apply to those returning from mainland Spain and those returning from Canaries and Balearics.

Which means that if like us you are due to travel to the Balearics at the end of next month we're fucked because we're still permitted to travel there under the FO regulations, so can't claim under our insurance. And we can't realistically do quarantine. So we're relying on goodwill from out Travel Agent to let us move dates or give us a refund. So the government has totally fucked people travelling to the islands as even though their covid rates are actually quite low (hence still allowed to travel there) they have made it incredibly difficult for people to travel there or get their money back if they can't do the quarantine period.

And before anyone makes a comment our holiday was booked back in November long before covid crap happened.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2020 21:19

Why would anyone have booke a foreign holiday in such uncertain times

FFS. Some of the people on holiday now, or due to travel in the next few days will have booked months ago, possibly even last year. They would have been faced with the very difficult choice of have their holiday, or lose all their money.

And even if not, it was looking like restrictions were being relaxed, and Spain etc were welcoming tourists back. Many people who went on holiday a week or two ago will have come back by now and had a lovely holiday with little or no disruption.

neveradullmoment99 · 25/07/2020 21:20

Ive every sympathy for those who live in Spain.
I have zero sympathy for anyone who has gone on holiday. They knew the risks. That is the way things are atm.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 21:20

@NewNewt

Can someone show me a current web location where is clearly says you have to or don't have to quarantine for 14 days on return from the Spanish Balearic of Canary islands after midnight tonight (25th July)?
I linked the gov.uk info above.

FCO advise all but essential travel to mainland Spain to be stopped.

All travellers returning from ANYWHERE in Spain including canaries and Balearics to quarantine for 14 days

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2020 21:21

All operators will cancel holidays now

Daisy do you mean they are all issuing refunds?

daisymay133 · 25/07/2020 21:22

Pertella

My friend booked with jet2 and asked on twitter and they said it’ll be cancelled

EasyJet also cancel if there any requirement to isolate as do tui

It’s automatic you don’t get choice

speakout · 25/07/2020 21:22

But again why would you? I know of two families who have booked holidays to Spain leaving in the next few days.

We are living in very uncertain and fast changing times. Any country could see spikes, waves of new infection, with very high possibilities of lockdown/quarantines at a moments notice.
This is the new reality right now, and I have zero sympathy for anyone thinking they can fly under the radar and dodge the risks. Naiive and foolhardy.

daisymay133 · 25/07/2020 21:23

It’s qll last minute now but no one will be going Spain or islands from tonight I’m sure

Even if flight only are not covered by Covid guarantee they’ll cancel due to low numbers caused by package cancellations

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 21:23

yes, I know, it didn't say that an hour ago. Hope they leave that website alone now. Lots of people have serious money riding on what it says either way (not me personally, I have several friends who booked way back last year)

neveradullmoment99 · 25/07/2020 21:24

Totally agree. Why is it so difficult for people to understand this. Its not the time for a holiday. Things are too uncertain.
neveradullmoment99 · 25/07/2020 21:25

I perhaps have sympathy for those who did book last year. However i would have been looking to cancel it tbh.

Batmanandbobbin · 25/07/2020 21:26

The government if they want quarantine upon return need to do a favour to those who are booked in the islands and place an advisory against travel as well. I get they don’t want to stop tourism (tit for tat) but who is going to willingly loose their job (extreme I know) or loose the experience they’ve paid £1000s+ for? When they probably booked last year and some families may have saved for years for it!!!

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 21:30

You could try never but most tour operators wouldn't let you....

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 21:31

neveradullmoment99 We booked in September to go in August. Tried to cancel, but Lastminute's cancellation policy is to charge the full amount for the holiday whether you actually travel or not. This cancellation fee applied from the date we booked the holiday. We stand to lose £2.4k. Never, ever booking with that company again 😡🤬😡🤬

neveradullmoment99 · 25/07/2020 21:32

Well that is shit @Piggywaspushed
However i cant understand people who have booked since all this virus shit started. For myself and my family, there would be no way i would be going abroad for now. I would hesitate even going somewhere in the UK.

saltycat · 25/07/2020 21:32

Honestly, the UK information portals are totally shit WRT this announcement.

However and I am really very sorry if I upset anyone..... the writing was on the wall for a long time regarding foreign travel. I understand that some might lose money, but if you booked before mid March or so, your travel insurance would be valid for this, but not if you booked after that AFAIS.

In some ways I have little sympathy for those who would travel regardless, and on the other hand I can understand the confusion.

But a cautious approach would always be my way, and so glad I was that cautious person. I'll be called smug next. I would prefer to be called responsible and sensible TBH.

Essential travel to visit loved ones in either direction is NOT what I am talking about here. That is a no brainer if essential.

Best of luck to all of you, hope it all works out.
