Their number of cases keep on rising, It looks really concerning now. Have they actually lost control of the outbreaks, as they keep putting bigger areas into lockdown again, or is it genuinely localised? Will UK and other European countries close borders with them soon like France has?

Oh...my elderly neighbour is in Majorca visiting her family, has been isolating all this time, I hope she is Ok bless her.

Lovewithalampost · 24/07/2020 15:52

Anecdotally - friend back from Spain on Sunday. Tested & confirmed she has Covid. She wore a mask in airport/flight and out and about, stayed in her parents villa and didn’t go out much at all so I’d say it’s rampant there again if she got it being so careful.

SVRT19674 · 24/07/2020 16:06

I live in Spain, and the situation is worrying in the Catalonia and certain parts of Aragon areas, which is basically the north-east, which borders with France, which is why they are worried in France. I am going down to Malaga, where my family is, and over there it isnt higher than anywhere else, and they were never really the center of the pandemic. There are huge chunks of the country that are unaffected. I live north of Madrid and arent particularly worried either. Good hand hygiene, masks and use your common sense.

ConcernedAuntie · 24/07/2020 16:13

Had my first haircut since February yesterday. My hairdresser had booked in January to go to Ibiza the second week in September, she had just had notification from Tui that it has been cancelled.

Delatron · 24/07/2020 16:23

Yes I’m worried about all this talk of a ‘Spanish second wave’ when the reality is it is very specific areas and it’s such a different situation than in March.

torydeathdrug · 24/07/2020 16:26

It seems fairly confined to particular areas

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2020 16:27

Coukd she not have got it before she went?

Piggywaspushed · 24/07/2020 16:29

That map doesn't seem to show the town in Murcia that has locked back down.

On the whole it is confined . For those who live there, I do think that is less of a worry if you aren't forced to endure airports, car hire queues and generally being out and about.

drivinmecrazy · 24/07/2020 16:58

I'm here in Murcia for a few months very near Totana. As soon as a 'cluster' was noted the whole town was locked down within hours.
No pre warning or opportunity to leave.
I feel a heck of a lot safer here than I did in UK.
Personally I wouldn't consider the risk worth it for a fortnight on holiday.
What is scarey here is that the beaches have been busier than usual in July and that's before the influx of holiday makers (primarily Spaniards in our town) that annually descend 1st August.
Will be a nightmare in the coming weeks as those from the cities flee to their second homes.

annabel85 · 24/07/2020 17:05

Only a matter of time before we get loads of outbreaks here from people coming back from summer holidays in Spain.

It was bad enough from half term ski trips to Italy. The government won't act till it's too late anyway.

torydeathdrug · 24/07/2020 17:06

I don't know, I'd be fairly reluctant to go tbh (watching carefully because dd is supposed to be travelling at the beginning of September).

Spain's 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100 000 is 34.6 compared to France 13.9, UK 14.3 & Italy 4.9. The UK currently testing in much higher numbers too ... I'd be seriously worried about being caught in some sort of lockdown.

New cases are quite markedly higher than the EU average.

So many people on FB announcing they are off to Spain, at least 4 I know of in the past 4 days. Even though I’m dying for a bit of sun (in Scotland it’s non existent at the moment) I wouldn’t risk it) but lockdown is long and I guess people are desperate for a holiday.

WearyandBleary · 24/07/2020 18:02

I’m worried about this: lots of teens from my DC school travelling there during August: seems like the ideal circumstances to spread it with returning home to full time colleges and schools. I really hope they bring quarantine back.

HairyFloppins · 24/07/2020 18:04

I’m worried about this as well. I’m worried about imported cases especially for Scotland. MIL is finally just starting to leave her house.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 18:17

Interestingly Spain are one of the most mask wearing countries, there was a post on here from a resident berating the attitude of some of us here. Seems masks did not prevent the spread really did they. Other measures may be just as useful.

HairyFloppins · 24/07/2020 18:21

I think masks may provide a false sense of security and people maybe not tend to social distance as much.

Lovewithalampost · 24/07/2020 18:35

@Orangeblossom78 I highly doubt that the nightclub of people who led to a large number of places were wearing masks in a nightclub. Please don’t use this as a reason to not wear a mask.

torydeathdrug · 24/07/2020 18:37

@HairyFloppins that's my concern - there are interventions proven to reduce transmission a lot (social distancing & hand hygiene, self isolation if ill) and then there's mask wearing which might help a bit. The net effect of people abandoning the behaviours proven to work because they have the magic mask of protection won't be good. Let's hope that people really are still doing the important, basic, non Instagrammable stuff.

ASchuylerSister · 24/07/2020 18:39

I read that it’s spreading amongst the young there (sure I read 17-30yrs) as they are not social distancing and are spending time together indoors ie nightclubs and pubs.

BillieEilish · 24/07/2020 18:46

I live near in a town near Valencia. All nightclubs and bars are shut after 10pm. All activities cancelled.

EVERYONE wears a mask.

Not on the map above.

manicinsomniac · 24/07/2020 20:13

That would make sense because their new death numbers are still virtually zero (2-3 a day). I thought it was because the new cases were historic ones caught by antibody tests but outbreaks among young people would explain it too.

Yeah was wondering this about Spain as they've been recording deaths in the low single digits for weeks while having higher a higher number of new cases than England who are still recording over 100 deaths most days. Obviously there's a lag between new cases and deaths but there's a major difference in death tolls for months now.
Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 21:16

So they have nightclubs open? OK

drivinmecrazy · 24/07/2020 21:27

Not here they're not.

Lovewithalampost · 24/07/2020 21:44

@drivinmecrazy
“ Around 400 people attended the nightclub Babylonia to celebrate the end of the school year on July 10. A week later the first case was detected, with 670 contacts under medical surveillance. The outbreak is now the largest of the 21 active in Andalusia, and the one of the biggest in Spain. The spike in infections is one of several related to nightclubs and parties in Spain, which authorities consider one of the greatest risks in the fight to slow coronavirus contagion.”
