I'm losing friends because I have coronavirus

I'm not sure what I want from this thread, a hand hold I guess.

This morning I received my test results and I'm positive. I put a post on Facebook set to just family and friends, warning people who've had contact with me to get tested and highlighting the need to watch out for symptoms other than the textbook ones.

I'm worried about my elderly mum who has hypertension who I've had direct contact with so my anxiety is through the roof and I'm scared.

Somebody I've known for thirteen years jumped on the post taking the mick saying if I get run over by a lorry in the next few weeks they'll put me down as a covid death as it's not a real virus but a government ploy. I told him now wasn't the time for conspiracy theories and to leave me be, he said he was removing me because I "believe the government" and he blocked me.

Somebody else I've known for a long time came on saying how the virus isn't real and "they" have given me a positive result to keep the numbers up.

Both people I've been friendly with for a long time and had no idea they held these types of views. The last thing I needed today was to deal with this. I thought I was doing the right thing by warning people to look out for symptoms other than the textbook ones (because I had none of them) Sad

AIBU to think these people were never friends in the first place.

@Monkeydog123

You were being dramatic announcing it on FB to be fair. And on here.
FFS people put photos of their lunch, their garden, their holiday etc on Facebook. They post that they're bored, have a headache, feeling a bit down today etc. At least it was a genuine news item! Why wouldn't OP's friends want to know?
userxx · 22/07/2020 12:28

To all the posters claiming OP wants attention, there isn’t anything wrong with that. Every single person who posts on the internet wants attention.

Righto if you say so.

sbhydrogen · 22/07/2020 12:29

Why is it dramatic to post it on Facebook? It's much easier than messaging everyone separately, honestly.

Your friends sound a bit crazy, hopefully they'll come to their senses.

SmileyClare · 22/07/2020 12:29

Yellow I think you can get another swab test if you want to know if it's safe to come out of isolation now.
I think you've been responsible and also this;

you've uncovered a couple of arseholes masquerading as friends well put Grin

WuhWuh · 22/07/2020 12:30

God people are being twats on here... You posted to 16 people on Facebook to warn them you'd received a positive. I don't see what the big deal is and why everyone is saying how dramatic that is tbh. If you've been in contact with a lot of these people it saves the time texting them all individually.

People just like to stick the boot in OP.

lotusbell · 22/07/2020 12:31

I know a few people on my Facebook - one unknown reasonably well in 'real life', the other pretty well but only online.
Both have been arguing or delating friends from.their social media for disagreeing with them, as they either posting conspiracy theories or ridiculing the government and how this pandemic has been handled. They're fuming about the situation, posting deliberately inflammatory memes or articles, then anyone who posts to say they disagree or have a different opinion are accused of only commenting to disagree with them. One of them is fuming about Boris and has deleted anyone who voted for him. I think everyone has the right to an opinion and express that on their own SM but once this has all calmed down I think there will be some regrets!

Myshinynewname · 22/07/2020 12:32

Wow OP, I can't believe some of the awful responses you've had on here. FWIW I would have been very grateful if you had taken the time to let me know you were positive after we'd been in contact. I'd far rather hear from you today than unknowingly meet vulnerable relatives today and then get a call from track and trace tomorrow. The fact that your symptoms are mild/not typical is completely irrelevant, you have a positive test and contacts need to isolate. I wonder whether the dickhead friend who blocked you just doesn't want the inconvenience of two weeks at home??

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/07/2020 12:34

As you are realising from this thread OP people dont want to know. It gets in the way of their narrative that it doesnt exist/has gone away/ couldn't happen to them. Tell them the truth and they get aggrieved- you are basically pissing on their chips.

If you need support with this look for the COVID groups on here or on Facebook. You might also want to weed your friendship group of the treats.

CharBart · 22/07/2020 12:35

I think you definitely did the right thing to let people know. You’re not far from me and officially there have only been tiny numbers of cases in the last few weeks locally with most people who had it coming down with it in March and April. As a result people are starting to relax and mix more so it’s important to know that it is still in circulation, even more so if you’ve had direct contact!

MayDayFightsBack · 22/07/2020 12:35

FFS there are some horrible people on this thread, have a word with yourselves about why you're being nasty for no apparent reason to someone who is scared and unwell.

OP, ignore the muppets on here and on Facebook. One good thing about this virus is that it does expose the ridiculous conspiracy twits. I've had to unfollow at least one on Facebook as I was so sick of them droning on. Get well soon.

sirfredfredgeorge · 22/07/2020 12:37

How can you have it and not feel slightly ill?

Because that's how all sorts of viruses work, including the flu, you just never normally know you have them.

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/07/2020 12:37

And what's with the "so dramatic to post it on Facebook " thing? People post all sort of trivial shot on Facebook, that's literally its raison d'etre.

ibblebibbledibble · 22/07/2020 12:37

Sorry you got such idiotic responses both on here and on Facebook. You did absolutely nothing wrong. Take care.

Badbadbunny · 22/07/2020 12:40

Good grief, how many people has OP been in contact with (and potentially infected) that she needed to broadcast it on Facebook rather than contacting them directly?

Surely if she'd been following the rules, it should have just been a few texts/phone calls to those in her "bubbles" etc. or they should have been told via track n trace.

Randomnessembraced · 22/07/2020 12:40

OP I think the whole Covid thing has become so political in a sense. With some friends I don’t discuss politics for a reason either. I think it can be a good way to weed out friends you don’t really agree with/will never be that close to. I hope you get well soon and your mum will be ok. Ignore unfriendly posters. So many people are not very balanced about the whole Covid debate and are having extreme reactions either way (denial or overly anxious). I think the fact you have tried to warn others and be responsible is great. I wish everyone would.

PhoenixReincarnated · 22/07/2020 12:42

OP those "friends" are not friends. Be glad you've found out now so you don't waste anymore of your valuable time on them. Ignore the twats on here. They're not worth any of your time or energy either.

I hope you're feeling better and have got the reassurance you need from the nicer posters.

mencken · 22/07/2020 12:45

a small bonus in that it has acted as an arsehole detector. Get rid, no coming back from those attitudes.

get well soon, that's the important bit.

MzHz · 22/07/2020 12:49

Im the first to roll my eyes at dramatic FB use, but actually sometimes it's useful to get info out to people both for their own knowledge or for them to know what is happening with you. One single post vs a whole load of messages. Depends how you worded it @Yellowc, but tbh, you didn't commit some kind of cardinal sin, far from it.

My ds was injured seriously a few years ago and we were in hospital for a while, no reliable mobile signal so I did a FB post (apologising for the facebookishness :) ) because lots of people know him but he was only little and not on FB most of my friends are far flung, they all made him feel so very special with their messages and thoughts.

Your 'friends' are dickheads! Pure and simple. Who the F says 'oh well if you die I a RTA you will be put down as a covid death' ??? I mean WTAF?! Shock

Ignore the twats on your FB, delete and block them and ignore the twats on here. If MN suffers as a result of covid it will be because of the fucking horrendous dementors and drama vultures on here.

Get well soon!

Grandmi · 22/07/2020 12:50

Aah just look after yourself and try not to worry. It’s better that people do know rather than through the grapevine!! TBH my husband’s friend had it and became ill the day after they had met up and didn’t tell my husband. Friend was quite unwell and I was so annoyed that we didn’t know. I work in a care home so it was very relevant! Just to reassure you I do know personally 4 people who tested positive and they are all absolutely fine .💐

RandyLionandDirtyDog · 22/07/2020 12:50

@Ilovechinese.

Look up the meaning of ‘Asymptomatic’ and google the story of Typhoid Mary.

It’s perfectly normal for some people to carry infectious diseases but not display symptoms themselves. It’s not a new thing but has been happening for hundreds of years.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/07/2020 12:53

@Ilovechinese

I do find it suspicious that some people can have it and apparently have no symptoms and know nothing about it until they have a test. Like u get things can affect people differently like old people can die from the flu and a young healthy person wouldn't but you would still know you was Ill if you had the flu. How can you have it and not feel slightly ill? And your friend is right they do out people down as covid deaths even if they had recovered
Absolutely common in all sorts of diseases. Flu is a classic for having a range of severity from asymptomatic to being in ICU or dying from it.

I don’t think the OP has done anything wrong here. She’s highlighted some standard Covid symptoms that people might not know about because they aren’t on the UK list at the same time as contacting the people she’s been in contact with.

I’m not sure you are supposed to wait for track and trace if you know the people you have been in contact with.

Zilla1 · 22/07/2020 12:54

They might have always been (rubbish) friends, OP, but now you know more about them (which isn't always a pleasant experience).

Hope you feel better soon if you're symptomatic.

Rwoolley · 22/07/2020 12:55

I would treat it as the trash taking itself out.

Why would you want to remain friends with these people?

Yellowc · 22/07/2020 12:55

Thank you for those being kind. I didn't expect the pile on I received but then I'm not that surprised.

I've seen much less relevant threads than this one in recent weeks, people post for a multitude of minor inconveniences and don't receive the telling off I've had. I wasn't posting for the type of attention implied, I posted because I'm scared.

I agree one good thing to come of this is that it's weeded out the idiots I need to get rid of in my circle.

gallbladderpain · 22/07/2020 12:56

Sorry you got such idiotic responses OP

Surely it doesn't matter if you believe OP had asymptomatic covid or not....she still tested positive regardless and could have passed on the infection and I would want to know if I had been in direct or indirect contact with a confirmed case owing to the fact that I have a vunerable DC !
Maybe if more people did a test like the OP did and then were smart enough to inform other people who would then self isolate we could make it safer for everyone !
Yes it may well just be a 'cold' for most but I for one would rather not contract that 'cold' and bring it home to someone who may well suffer significantly same way OP is concerned about her mother...it would be deeply concerning for me as well.
But then ive never realised just how many selfish people there is until covid ...as long as they only get a 'cold' bugger anyone else !
Hope you are well OP and that your contacts don't contract it....not that the couple of idiot ones would get a test anyways instead they will just carry on spreading it around Hmm
