A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

Wow @MoreListeningLessChatting - actual hard data, as opposed to a bunch of condescending, patronising seagulls in an echo chamber of negativity and pretend facts! You can probably tell I've just been reading that thread too Smile

MoreListeningLessChatting · 30/07/2020 21:13

@Delta1

It's depressing isn't it. I did try to share some information about some research that has been published showing that a study could not find one single case where a teacher had caught covid from a school child. Various other data etc to show no need to social distance in school or wear masks and out came the rage. Insults flying. Some people are strange. No point in bothering when people are only interested in bad things and negatives though.

Its weird that they think children suddenly become mega infectious on their 10th birthday

MoreListeningLessChatting · 30/07/2020 21:22

These are the 18 local authorities with a rate of 0.0:

Barrow-in-Furness
North Devon
West Devon
Ryedale
Mid Suffolk
Isle of Wight
Scarborough
King's Lynn and West Norfolk
Great Yarmouth

Obviously a small number, but great to see some areas reporting no new cases

MoreListeningLessChatting · 30/07/2020 21:23

It only pasted half the data...the rest here
Hart
Mole Valley
Test Valley
Sedgemoor
Adur
Torridge
Malvern Hills
Staffordshire Moorlands
Rother
Yesterday (July 24), Devon Live reports that in the last seven days, there have been five cases confirmed in Plymouth, and three in Torbay, although two historical duplicates for Torbay have been removed.

@Jrobhatch29

"There is a growing body of evidence that children play a limited in role in transmitting Covid-19 and are less likely than adults to bring infections into a household. In particular we refer to the recent statement made by Sage member, Professor Mark Woolhouse:

“One thing we have learnt is that children are certainly, in the 5 to 15 brackets from school to early years, minimally involved in the epidemiology of this virus…There is increasing evidence that they rarely transmit. For example, it is extremely difficult to find any instance anywhere in the world as a single example of a child transmitting to a teacher in school.” (1)
At the same time, recent data released by the ONS demonstrates the significant negative impact that school closures have had on the mental health of children and parents and on the ability of parents to work productively. (2) It is critical for the recovery of this country’s economy that schools are now kept open and fully operational save in the most exceptional of circumstances."

I appreciate that the negative thread don't believe any of this evidence.

Oxford vaccine trials continue to look promising

Looking likely for end of the year yey

Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 07:13

Thank you for this thread. I’d pretty much given up on MN, as a pp said, there’s a small core group of people who are fairly aggressive, refuse to see positives and want things to remain shut for their own personal gain. It’s quite embarrassing really. I imagine they are virtually high fiving each other 🙄

Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 07:21

Having just read the school thread, there is absolutely no point in engaging.
Hopefully they’ll be an uptake in teacher training, many people will be looking for work.

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 08:04

Just posting for info..

The Scottish schools announced opening in full yesterday and based on the above will not be making mask wearing mandatory. before any negatives pounce on me just stating facts of what is happening and what was said, which can be viewed on the BBC website.

They go back 11 Aug or 18th...

Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 08:05

Yes apparently enquiries have increased for teacher training also nursing

more positive news I suppose!

Is it just me or does this article sum up mumsnet?

medium.com/@staceyrudin/superstition-in-the-pigeon-can-lockdowns-really-stop-death-62bf3bc885a0

Stay home’ to save lives; ‘go out’ and kill people.” We froze in our places, shocked at our newfound power. New systems were implemented; kids were set in front of sanitized screens in place of classrooms; alarms were set for 4 a.m. to reserve grocery delivery timeslots to avoid contaminating the store aisles with our breath. “Whatever it takes. At all costs, we will not promote death.” Very few dissenters emerged; instantaneously-formed natural community-watch groups policed them. Anyone who did not take “the safety of thy neighbor” seriously enough (as revealed by any hint of dissatisfaction with the suspension of the Constitution) was identified, labeled, shamed, and ostracized.

To scared (irrational) people, however, suppression provides at least some “hope” of avoiding a horrific early death. You cannot blame terrified people for their feelings, but you can and should blame the media and government for misrepresenting personal risk during a pandemic. No cost is too high to keep open the possibility of staying alive. People focused on that will not comprehend any second- or third-tier consequences of their self-preservation efforts.

So glad schools in scotland are reopening. Hopefully it might create some calm before september

What thread is that ? People not wanting them to open

Totally agree with this
Orangeblossom78 · 31/07/2020 09:10

I think there is also an underlying element of this as well amongst some professionals perhaps..benefits to this situation continuing for some, not for others though..

Interesting new study about existing immunity with T cells...just out this week

edition.cnn.com/2020/07/30/health/t-cells-coronavirus-study-wellness/index.html

Orangeblossom777 · 31/07/2020 14:23

Around 35% of healthy (non covid) controls had a T cell immunity already...over 80% in those who had covid

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 31/07/2020 16:04

Ah I love this thread. Thank you.

Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 18:05

@DebLou47 yes the not opening thread ...
I think they are best avoided tbh, alternative views very obviously not welcome anyway.

Delta1 · 31/07/2020 18:27

Well Boris and Chris Whitty have both confirmed, in no uncertain terms, that while local lockdowns will continue to be instigated as and when necessary, schools opening is the absolute national priority and will go ahead . And so it bloody well should be.
So that thread is now redundant Wink

Delta1 · 31/07/2020 18:39

Sorry - to be totally accurate - should go ahead as the priority. I'm taking heart from that as Whitty is kind of an Eeyore, so if he's pushing it then I'm less worried it won't happen!

This is interesting. Another study found when a child is the index case they rarely spread it to adults, or even other children
