A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

@Delta1 I didn’t manage to see the briefing, that’s encouraging.
@Jrobhatch29 also encouraging 🙂

Delta1 · 31/07/2020 19:30

Chief medical officer for England, Professor Chis Whitty, told the briefing: “The idea that we can open up everything and keep the virus under control is clearly wrong and what we are seeing is that we are at the outer edge of what we can do and therefore choices will need to be made, but people are very clear, for example, that schools are an absolute priority for the welfare of children.”

Littlebelina · 31/07/2020 19:35

some are still trying to interpret that as them getting ready to u turn on schools but it seems reassuring to me.

MarshaBradyo · 31/07/2020 19:39

Delta that’s great thanks for quoting that

Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 19:42

I really feel children need to be prioritised, other things can close if need be.

Delta1 · 31/07/2020 19:44

@Littlebelina really? I'm not sure how that could interpreted as a u-turn....
God I really hope not.

Littlebelina · 31/07/2020 20:04

I think some people are so invested in the idea that full school opening cannot happen that they will see any mention of potential difficulties (even when caveated with schools are a priority) as a reason that it can't happen.

I accept it won't be easy and that the proposals (especially for secondary) don't mean there won't be bumps in the road. I accept that there will probably be local school closures. However part time school/blended learning just don't work with our societal set up(at least not without considerable investment in alternative childcare which even it was possible would just lead to more mixing). Lots of teachers I know have kids and need full time school/childcare for starters before we even talk about other working parents. I know it won't be ideal next term but it will be better than what was in place last term for the majority of children and their parents.

Say this on the school threads though and you are personally responsible for the slaughter of 17 school staff. There is no point engaging

Littlebelina · 31/07/2020 20:05

ps School needs to be the priority

Delta1 · 31/07/2020 20:08

Fully agree with everything you've said @Littlebelina
I am enjoying a little chortle every time someone comes out with the dramatic (they hope) proclamation 'well I'M not buying any uniform until the last minute!!!!'
Fine! Thanks for sharing Smile

Jrobhatch29 · 31/07/2020 20:10

You lot clearly just don't want to look after your own children Wink

Jrobhatch29 · 31/07/2020 20:10

Totally agree, part time school would not work for many reasons

Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 20:15

Well they're not childcare...

Littlebelina · 31/07/2020 20:28

@Pomegranatepompom

Well they're not childcare...
Tell that to the job centre......
Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 20:32

They'll be a lot be people looking for work. Could be an amazing opportunity for education sector.

I should have added a smiley face, the childcare thing is often said.. !

Littlebelina · 31/07/2020 20:37

Wasn't sure if you were being serious pomegranatepompom, it's said so many times on here by people who clearly believe it that I've lost the ability to see when someone is jestingSmile

I was having a read on an australian site about a lady that travelled from Auckland NZ to Sydney recently and tested positive on arrival in Sydney. The interesting thing (to me anyway) is that she was living in the UK in March (London I think) and returned home to NZ and she thinks she had covid around this time caught in the UK (not tested at time as no tests in either UK or NZ when she arrived home- just self isolated anyway).
So she is now flagging up in Sydney as a positive test BUT she suspects this might be from 3 months ago - so she is not contagious anymore. She has been in NZ since March afterall so did not catch it there.
We do know that people can test positive for a long time so could it be possible that at least some of the positive tests being picked up now in Yorkshire etc - actually be from old infections rather than new ones?
I thought this was certainly a possibility and if so good news (or at least less depressing? )

tootyfruitypickle · 31/07/2020 21:00

@Littlebelina glad I read this. I made the mistake of engaging on the schools thread . Was very relieved to see both Boris and Whitty being clear that schools were now the absolute priority.

I suppose it is possible. A nurse I have on FB tested positive for 10 weeks despite only having symptoms for a week.
tootyfruitypickle · 31/07/2020 21:04

@Delta1 sorry reading this backwards with huge relief! Agree with all your posts!

tootyfruitypickle · 31/07/2020 21:10

Oh goodness I’ve just seen the thread you’re referring to, I thought you meant the other schools thread. The one from today is even worse !
Today’s presser definitely indicated that schools were going back above anything else.

Jrobhatch29 · 31/07/2020 21:13

Every thread ends up about schools atm. All having the same argument

toucancancan · 31/07/2020 21:15

This is such a positive thread. Book marking for when I need a pick me up

whenwillthemadnessend · 31/07/2020 21:17

Please can we not turn this into another schools thread. It's a great thread for good news and studies.

There are hundreds of school threads for debating that issue GinThanks

Redolent · 31/07/2020 21:22

I saw that this thread was active and assumed people were discussing good news...

Seconding the sentiment re/school debates.

Pomegranatepompom · 31/07/2020 21:23

Agree. I work in a London hospital, we’ve stopped routinely screening paediatric patients, positive tests were so low.
Also in a trust which employs around 5k of people - only 2% are shielding or have symptoms. Very optimistic in a high risk area.. this will be lower when many people return to work.
