A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

@tobee

Robert Fisk is a journalist
Oh yer I don't like journalists 😉
Jrobhatch29 · 13/10/2020 20:48

@JemimaPyjamas

I spoke to a relative who works in ICU yesterday and asked her if, in her opinion, people are being admitted to hospital sooner than they were in the spring. She thinks they are. They also (she’s in the south west, I’m in Yorkshire) have patients in ICU who’d have been on the COVID ward last time. They have relatively low cases where she is though in comparison to me. This maybe something worth bearing in mind when looking at graphs of hospital admissions.
I mentioned on another thread that I watched a sky news report from an ICU ward last night. It was completely different to the ones from April where the patients were on their fronts, unconsious and ventilated. They were sitting up, talking and on CPAP machines. It seemed totally different and I hope that means the treatment and approach is much better now
tobee · 13/10/2020 20:52

Yes lots of the new drugs being tested are best given early (monoclonal antibodies I think?) so hopefully people aren't having to hang about at home trying to treat themselves.

Chickenandrice · 13/10/2020 22:35

I was just reading article on sky news saying that we have 340 vaccines of 6 different types on vaccines for Covid stockpiles in the uk ready to go as soon as results come in. And it also said that the oxford vaccine phase 3 results was due in a matter of weeks. So does that mean it could be available to start implementing as soo. As these results are available - literally in a few weeks?

Chickenandrice · 13/10/2020 22:36

Sorry for typos - on phone. Hope it made sense

chri55ie · 13/10/2020 22:52

I think the vaccine would need approval first after the phase 3 results. I think they have lodged what they have already in terms of results with the relevant authorities called a ‘rolling review’ which should speed up the approval process.

Chickenandrice · 13/10/2020 22:54

Thanks

Hopefully that's 340 million. Otherwise a lot of people will be disappointed.

@dollychopss the media are currently obsessed with reporting the most depressing news they can. Trying to sell misery. Angry I think you just have to strictly limit your news reading atm.

tobee · 14/10/2020 03:26

@dollychopss and @kittensarecute just to try to counteract that Daily Mail article, here's The Independent's reporting of the same professor at the same virtual conference which has a more upbeat spin:-

Bouncycastle12 · 14/10/2020 04:04

Any more good news anyone?

JemimaPyjamas · 14/10/2020 08:11

Morning! I too saw the Daily Fail piece and felt down but am trying to think of it constructively and reminding myself that the DF is a load of shite, and ‘normal’ will come in stages so the ‘start of normal’ may start much sooner as they will prioritise vaccines

HeronLanyon · 14/10/2020 08:18

One day at a time folks. One damn day at a damn time. M
Btw hope Fisk is ok after that kicking upthread. Made me smile.

Chickenandrice · 14/10/2020 08:20

The daily mail is awful. They try and whip up the public in to a frenzy one way or another. They are either printing stories about how awful everything is and the government haven’t done enough. Or they print stories about how the whole thing is an overreaction and the government should have followed the Swedish model and kept the economy open. They don’t care which spin it is

JemimaPyjamas · 14/10/2020 08:37

@tobee thanks for that link, far better! X

jasjas1973 · 14/10/2020 08:48

Well, the Chinese have rolled out a phase 3 trial of their vaccine across many countries in the ME, started with UAE & due to end soon, with approval sought early next year, Up to 31k people took part.

www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-emirates-vaccine-int-idUSKBN26T1N5

We should not be dismissing Russian and Chinese vaccines, China especially have been researching coronavirus for many years.

2020CanDoOne · 14/10/2020 09:09

Oh that is a more upbeat article. Thanks @tobee

I agree, the Daily Fail gaslights us all the time, I’m much happier to read stuff on COVID on the Independent/ BBC website - even though they are far from impartial too.

Chickenandrice · 14/10/2020 09:18

Yes the bbc annoys me as i don’t feel it’s very impartial. Not sure where is best really!

cathyandclare · 14/10/2020 09:25

The Independent was much more balanced. With a targeted roll out of vaccine initially to the elderly, vulnerable and front-line, together with some level of immunity in the young population ( inevitable following the student outbreaks) that should hopefully keep the R suppressed, so that we can return to a degree of normality gradually.

JemimaPyjamas · 14/10/2020 09:33

The Independent was saying what has been said pretty much all along re vaccines, it was just the DM making it sound negative. Weirdly though, the DM are also slating the current lockdown situations and playing now severity.

Still, it's good for giving me a heads up as to what my mother might be spouting!

Racoonworld · 14/10/2020 09:52

I saw that daily mail article too and actually thought it was good news. If you look at it in a more positive way, vaccine likely by Christmas or early next year, the vulnerable and health workers vaccinated in the few months from then, restrictions will be gradually relaxed and back to normal by summer. It won’t be like this until summer it will gradually get better after the initial bad winter period.
also seen this which sounds interesting on exercise and vitamin D, and a nice voucher to participate! www.bath.ac.uk/campaigns/take-part-in-our-study-and-exercise-your-way-to-a-healthier-vitamin-d-status/
This is great, and it's the sort of thing that nearly everyone can do to improve their own health.
I know a million people in the UK gave up smoking at the beginning of lockdown and hopefully people have been inspired to make other positive lifestyle changes as well.

Dustballs · 14/10/2020 10:47

Bad news can be true though can't it? I won't read the Daily Mail - but the likelihood of this going on until next July seems very reasonable to me. I'm expecting it to go on longer.

For me - I feel more positive if I'm prepared of the worst. Also prefer to be realistic.

Is the purpose of this thread to drown out current cirrumstances and worries with positive news - whatever they maybe, even if they're nowhere near the truth?

I don't understand.
