A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

"Importantly, the patients with a previously detected eCoV had less severe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) illness. Our observations suggest that pre-existing immune responses against endemic human coronaviruses can mitigate disease manifestations from SARS-CoV-2 infection."

Yes they found that people who had had SARS and survived were immune to COVID-19 didn't they?

2020CanDoOne · 08/10/2020 09:09

Ok, it's the Daily Mail again, sorry... but I really hope this is true

The Daily Mail is a guilty pleasure of mine, awful as it is! I tried to find similar from somewhere more reputable but couldn’t, however I’m not letting that get in the way of some optimism, especially with some similar stuff being told on this thread. God I hope so anyway! All the face masks and weirdness is getting too much

tobee · 10/10/2020 18:04

Damn I've not get anything to add but bump!

tobee · 11/10/2020 00:02

I have now.

This is largely optimistic:-

Hope the link worked

dollychopss · 11/10/2020 00:19

@tobee I think treatments will be the first we hear and i think this time next year just like the flu

tobee · 11/10/2020 05:16

Just woke up to see a bit of live Rugby Union. New Zealand v Australia. A real, live crowd attending! Normality can return. Has returned there.

tobee · 11/10/2020 05:20

Btw not a mask to be seen at the game!

LunaNorth · 11/10/2020 05:27

Place marking. Desperate for good news. This thread is a tonic.

It does contain optimistic elements but Devi Sridhar's estimate that it's not going to be over until 2024, or maybe 2023, is not really what I wanted to read. Granted that doesn't mean she thinks things won't improve dramatically before then, but still, it made my heart sink.

Some news today about the BCG being used to give some immune response to help protect people...

I find she is largely quite a pessimistic person so try not to feel too down!

I hate the way such pessimistic statements tend to be made in such a matter of fact manner. As though it would be no big deal for this to go on for almost half a decade.
Orangeblossom7777 · 11/10/2020 11:46

Devi is the advisor to Nicola (Scotland) and tends to take a zero covid approach, and has said some odd things sometimes.

That's interesting a read about that a while ago and never heard anything else about it.
I still remember getting mine at school and me and my friends having fake reactions to it for a lie down on the PE mats and a bunk from lessons lol

Orangeblossom7777 · 11/10/2020 13:28

Me too, and remember it making a strange mark after the jab. Well it appears that having it years ago may not help much, but having it recently may help perhaps.

tobee · 11/10/2020 15:17

Yes I was thinking the bit from Prof Peter Hornby being "excited" and "incredibly optimistic" about treatments in that Times piece. Sorry about the less upbeat stuff; I couldn't work out how to highlight the good bits.

Obviously it's a shame that a top up might be needed but if the vaccine is already to go...

I was trying to remember when it was on the childhood vaccination schedule? I'm sure my 84 year old mum has the tell tale scar on her upper arm!

chri55ie · 11/10/2020 16:30

Matt Hancock tweeted today about the ‘strategy of suppressing the virus until a vaccine can keep us safe’ Do you think the very fact that he is talking about this strategy until a vaccine is found means we must be getting closer or am I reading too much into it?!

JemimaPyjamas · 12/10/2020 09:43

Ahhhh, the nice thread! Phew!

My diabetic nurse (I’m a type 1 diabetic) mentioned the BCG thing ages ago but I’d heard little about it since.

dollychopss · 12/10/2020 09:54
