A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

Just been looking for you @dollychopss. Best thing I can find so far is from Daily Mail:-

www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8830273/amp/How-Covid-19-cases-HALF-Whitty-Vallances-doomsday-prediction-50-000.html

Layladylay234 · 12/10/2020 17:33

I honestly don't get the hysteria at the moment. Yes cases etc are rising, but we knew this would happen as schools, unis went back. And they're not rising as quickly as they were, anyone can see that from the weekly figures. It's so odd how crazy some people get just because they don't seem to read/examine both sides of the situation.

Anyway, here's my good news for today. This doctor on twitter (mobile.twitter.com/SepsisUK is fairly balanced and doesn't catastrophise. He retweeted the following:

It is true that there are more Covid patients in hospital now (3,451) than on 23 March (3,097) before the lockdown. But context is important. In the last 4 days, total has gone up 17%.
In March the total was doubling every 3-4 days and reached 17k by mid-April
And
The seven day average of NHS triage for COVID-19 has fallen below 10,000 for the first time since early September

As Vallance and Whitty have been telling is for months, first cases fall, then hospitilations, then deaths. Hopefully this fall in triage will follow with falls in cases etc

cathyandclare · 12/10/2020 17:36

The Mail sorry, but sensible SAGE source- ICU COVID deaths have fallen to 20%

Risk of coronavirus death in hospital is falling, new figures reveal

Jrobhatch29 · 12/10/2020 17:38

I read that 111 triage has been a good indicator all the way through so fingers crossed. It does seem people are going back into "the electricity will be off in a fortnight" mode

It's frustrating how some things which were big news at the time just kind of disappear..for example, they said that apparently COVID tests can pick up the dead virus in a person's system, meaning that the person doesn't have it anymore but did in the past. Is this being taken into account when they report the number of positive cases everyday? They were saying quite a significant percentage of tests were false positives - if this is still the case, it would mean that there aren't as many active cases as they're reporting but it's not something they're reminding us when they report the numbers!

dollychopss · 12/10/2020 18:50

I just can't see a way out !!! What is the way out we can't keep locking down

Ugh tell me about it. I just feel like the Government are running round panicking like headless chickens. Not surprising really.
chri55ie · 12/10/2020 19:08

I think we are in a tough bit of this pandemic now. Things are locking down again and no real concrete news on vaccines. I am hoping we might be getting some news on the vaccine contenders soon. I saw a report today that, for example, Pfizer vaccine should be getting some results by end of October. So though it feels and is very gloomy hopefully this won’t last forever.....and we should see some sort of light at end of tunnel soon

I spoke to a relative who works in ICU yesterday and asked her if, in her opinion, people are being admitted to hospital sooner than they were in the spring. She thinks they are. They also (she’s in the south west, I’m in Yorkshire) have patients in ICU who’d have been on the COVID ward last time. They have relatively low cases where she is though in comparison to me. This maybe something worth bearing in mind when looking at graphs of hospital admissions.
