More easing? Please 3 households indoor at a time so our holiday can go ahead!

The man's a fool
I can't take him seriously he's like Ken Dodd with a posh voice
(appreciate that Ken Dodd would score higher on integrity)

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/07/2020 12:12

@Kandigirl71

missed Bojo's update, did anything interesting crop up?
Yes, 3 billion for the NHS to manage a possible 2nd wave. Never mind that though 'they just don't care!' according to this thread.
crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 12:14

I think the mixed and confused messaging around working from home has to do with the commercial property market

I think the government is under pressure from owners of commercial property who do not want to see the drop in the value of their assets which would result from a widespread shift to home working

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 17/07/2020 12:14

What’s the likelihood that money turns out not to be new money but money the NHS already has?

YonBonnieBanks · 17/07/2020 12:15

Not in England but this sounds like

"your job can totally be done from home but I'm your employer so get the fuck in here"

Does that also mean theatres will reopen? How is that safe?

And back to normal in November....I thought winter was the most dangerous time?

I'm confused!

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2020 12:16

They are not 'following the sciences' anymore

Are the chief medical and scientific advisers not with you today because they believe your plan is too optimistic?' - @BethRigby

Boris Johnson says Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance give advice - but decisions are taken by "elected politicians".

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/07/2020 12:16

@Yellowbutterfly1

And now an urgent review into Public Health England by Matt Hancock as he’s just realised numbers haven’t been at all accurate.
Yes PHE seem to be a shit show.

I believe any independent review will show our sad deaths have been totally overestimated. It seems if you test positive for covid, then die of unrelateded causes it is still recorded as a Covid death.

Mumratheevergiving · 17/07/2020 12:16

Missed it, why don't they put these announcements on at 6pm and announce timing widely in advance(probably as they've realised it's better for people not to listen to the PM's garbled messaging?)

EmMac7 - Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Apparently.

That messaging seems a bit contradictory to their policies, they are working more along the lines of:
'Facilitate Hope for the worst, plan for the best' ?

LondonJax · 17/07/2020 12:19

so office workers buying sandwiches and coffees is more important than their health it would seem.

There were a couple of businesses (large companies) on the radio this morning saying that they're going to provide lunch from now onor ask employees to bring their own if they prefer. They're changing policies to stop people going all over the place during their lunch hour and bringing things back to the office. That way they can create some sort of working bubble even if people have to travel in. Cuts the risk slightly.

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2020 12:19

Is social care included in the 3 billion or just the NHS?

Redwinestillfine · 17/07/2020 12:20

It all about the 👛 very disappointed. It's not even well thought-out. If you're going in the office it doesn't follow that you'll buy lunch. I certainly wouldn't at the moment. I'd be driving there, taking my own lunch and leaving as soon as I can. If he wants the economy to improve the focus needs to be on getting rid of the virus. I just don't understand it.

YonBonnieBanks · 17/07/2020 12:20

the first rule of risk assessment is eliminate the risk as much as possible - working from home is the minimum of risks

exactly the argument I am currently having with my own manager as someone who has multiple disabilities. That or a change of role to one that is safer but they don't seem keen on that either.

DebLou47 · 17/07/2020 12:21

OMG he is damned if he does damned if he doesn't !!! Ok for scientist to say don't go back to work as they have a salary coming in each month but what about people that will lose their jobs the receptionists etc!!! The science would say Lantau locked down but we can't !!!
I think he knows more maybe a vaccine or treatment by end if this year but use your common sense.

labyrinthloafer · 17/07/2020 12:21

@GetOffYourHighHorse

They don't appear to have much interest in limiting the resurgence of the virus, no. That is what I meant when I said they don't give a shit.

Fully reopening in November seems strange, if we can't do those things now I genuinely don't understand how they'll be safe in winter.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/07/2020 12:22

'Are the chief medical and scientific advisers not with you today because they believe your plan is too optimistic?' - @BethRigby'

The msm are pathetic. Lifting of lockdown is being done cautiously and in a similar way to other countries. There's an immediate response to hotspots. Loads of testing capacity now.

What do people actually expect, do we seriously think it's feasible to be told to stay at home until 2021?!

DebLou47 · 17/07/2020 12:23

@GetOffYourHighHorse
Totally what you said !

Beebityboo · 17/07/2020 12:25

I keep hoping that the Government know that there is a safe, reliable vaccine around the corner. It's the only way my brain can make sense of their ineptitude. They couldn't tell people yet before distribution starts because it would lead to an upswing, but they know its coming and are planning accordingly.
... Or they're just inept Grin

The80sweregreat · 17/07/2020 12:26

Ds2 has been wfh since mid March. He has a 45 min lunch break and sometimes orders in a sandwich which has kept the local deli in business (mostly on pay day! )
His saving over 500 a month on bus and train fares and he is working 9 till 6 every day. They can monitor his work and breaks and his more productive than spending 3 hours a day travelling to the office to do the exact job he is doing from here! They have zoom meetings each day and it's working well. His asthmatic, so it's all win win , can shield and still work the same hours etc.

He could go in once a month for meetings or maybe do one day a week or something but like many he much prefers this set up for now! It's not for everyone to do this but bullying people to go back to the long commute etc etc also might not work now people can work from home successfully.
People with little children will disagree of course!

I think you're kidding yourself, but you're entitled to. Clearly Patrick Vallance and Chris Whitty have both expressed that social distancing should stay. Johnson doesn't want to. That is very risky.
GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/07/2020 12:26

'They don't appear to have much interest in limiting the resurgence of the virus, no. That is what I meant when I said they don't give a shit.'

Don't they? So we've all imagined Leicester and other local lockdowns have we?

The infection rates are down, deaths are down (and phe seem to have cocked that up in the first place), NHS nightingales on standby, 3b extra nhs funding, massive financial support for businesses and furloughed staff. No, I'm not Boris Johnson but honestly how can you say they 'don't give a shit' Confused

whereistherum · 17/07/2020 12:27

@ElizabethG81 and @LadyOfTheImprovisedBath thank you for answering my question.

Its going to make the summer holiday slightly easier, if we can use public transport

Velvian · 17/07/2020 12:28

I'm so lucky that I work for a responsible employer who have said that we will be WFH until 'well into 2021'.

So many others will be at the mercy of the employer's whims.

crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 12:30

Lots of us have realised that we can live much more happily if we stop spending money we can't afford on crap that we don't need or want
this is a big problem for the wealthy people at the top, that's why Boris wants us all to go back to work, his wealthy backers and friends are starting to see their fortunes decline

Crankley · 17/07/2020 12:31

Chloemol Very sensible advice but on here no-one allows the facts to get in the way of Boris bashing.

Some of you appear to think that the information given by the PM and other Ministers in their briefings is something they made up on a whim whereas it's actually provided by the Chief Scientific and Medical Officers. Hmm
